How to Tie the Midshipman Hitch | Secure and Adjustable Knot
It's a good demo on how to tie it. It would be nice to learn where this knot performs better than other adjustable loop knots.
Your content is inspiring. I hope you garner more recognition
Thank you Jared!
Am I viewing this incorrectly, or does it appear to be that one ties a clove hitch onto the standing end of the rope after looping it around the anchor point?
You are correct!
@@How2Knots thanks for the quick reply! I was in the boy scouts 20 years ago and decided it was time to try and remember all my knots and then learn some 'real' knots as well. I love quick guides like this.
Sick
Amazung
#great knot
Great
Great!
I like it
It's just a slip knot?
Yes but no.
Pretty much, just replace the working end of a slip knot stopper knot with whatever your marlinspike is
Узел который можно запомнить на всю оставшуюся жизнь
Wow👌👌👌👌🌹🌹🌹🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵
That’s not how you spell marlinspike. It’s one word, named after the nautical tool marlinspike.
Nice
@@Avabro1 this is the simplest knot
Marlin. Not marling. The fish. Which has a spike.
👍
Super nice
Love the background
👍
Great video. Super easy to follow! Thank you
I swear I had to watch this 10 times to understand what's happening. The loop catches both pieces of rope basically
You tripping it ain’t that hard
Very straight forward
@@brockw5857 Idk if I comment on every knot video I see I'd probably be trippin
@@Avabro1 it's literally just a fancy hitch..
What you have tied is a crown knot which is made with two anticlockwise half hitches you can also make another overhand knot using two clockwise half hitches which is called a wall knot .Ashley did not fully understand this fact as one can see by looking at his book.
Good knot
Now this, is EPIC
My second most used knot, behind the Paloma of course
Thank you for this knot, it will really help me
I hope we will meet in heaven
Just a heads up... the knot you tied for #3 wasn't the Clove Hitch.... that was the Constrictor Knot. It holds very tightly and, depending on how much force is applied, usually has to be cut off because it cannot be untied. The Clove Hitch does not go "over the main line and underneath the X". To finish off the Clove Hitch you would just take your working end of the rope back over the pole and underneath the top line of the X (but parallel to the bottom of the X). Both ends (working end and standing end) should come out from the center of the X on opposite sides when complete. The Clove Hitch will hold under tension yet is easy to untie when slack is introduced. Other than that, great job! 👍👍
Favourite knot so far!
Super good
Great!
Love this series
Helpful
I come to RUclips for more complex knots all the time. Especially for paracord lanyards. It’s good to see another channel popping up that is useful.
Buenos días , me gusta el tipo de video pues son muy útiles hasta en casa 🎉 muchas gracias felicidades
That’s actually a dope view
Finally, one I have been doing right all these years. Yay!
Класс, я так вяжу
What situation would you use this knot? Curious.
If you want to attach another hook midline, it’s great because you don’t need an end of your line to tie it!
awesome
It's a Prusik...
Distributes the force. Cool
Thanks
Thanks
how tough is it to untie after it's been loaded? I assume it's hard, but not as bad as slip knots and some hitches/constrictors. I don't have my practice rope w/me to try it myself
I guess you could probably do a quick release by passing a bight vs the entire tag end, but I worry it might compromise this knot a lil?
Your comment got me thinking and so I tested the knot around an anchor point with everything I had in my body pulling, and even at my full force the knot was easily adjustable under tension, and it unties alright. like you mentioned it's somewhat difficult to untie but not impossible. The stronger you tighten the initial knot before tension the harder it is to untie, but you don't want to tie it to loose and compromise the knot. A sort of middle ground you have to experiment to find. I found that a bight actually made the knot harder to untie after tension because the end of the bight tends to get stuck under the loops where as a single strand can slip through easier.
@@How2Knotsthanks! I didn’t expect such a thorough response, awesome
Un0p😊
This is super useful. Thank you for the tutorial! Quick and straight to the point
thanks
How does this compare to an Alpine Butterfly?
I see it as the same thing just climbing vs fish but just sound complicated.
They both serve the same function, and my opinion is that it just comes down to preference. But I have tested and pulled tension from all directions and there is no sign of anything wrong. The Alpine Butterfly may have a slight advantage of not tightening as much when tension is put on the loop, or an easier untie you could call it. I may create a video comparing the two knots under tension to examine the differences!
I was going to ask the same question. It also reminds me of the Prusik (IIRC) hitch, except that is a) a hitch and b) a separate piece of line. But remembering that lets me remember this one w/o much effort. I’d be interested to see the results if u did a comparison, cuz the alpine is a PITA to untie after loading. Admittedly, it probably won’t be a popular video with the masses
@@kernelsmith huh, funny you say that cause I love the alpine butterfly because I find it to be far and away the easiest mid-line loop to untie after loading
Nice
Very similar to a timber hitch
