The right way to clean a gas boiler Heat Exchanger
I see far too many videos from gas engineers (and gas trainers) cleaning boiler heat exchangers with a drill and nylon brush.
This is NOT the way to do it. Manufacturers' instructions specifically state not to. It scratches the heat exchanger which will eventually cause corrosion.
I use water and a Viessmann cleaning too for cleaning between the grooves. For very dirty heat exchangers I use a specific combustion side cleaner that I bought from Canada, Axi-Therm 'Clean F Steel' for stainless steel heat exchangers.

Great video, you made a complicated topic very understandable. I have a question though, can manufacturers take a sample of system water and know what inhibitor was used without using individual test strips? I see Fernox, Sentinel and Adey all do the very expensive strips but do they all just detect the amount of molybdate in the system? Thanks

If you change this to the proper copper olives and proper sized fittings, would it void insurance? ( cannot understand why Alde do not do this as its looks like a bodge job and not at all compliant with the regulations on boats!) more fittings, inserts et al just make it more likely to leak with devastating results!
Hi Ron. Thanks for your comment. There are no more additional fittings than there were at the start. All I've done is replace a metric male iron with an imperial male iron, and swapped out the brass olive for a copper one. I would argue that by converting to imperial, you're actually complying with insurance policies for gas on boats. The imperial wall thickness is thicker than metric and the fitting is far less likely to leak when using a copper olive, which allows for movement.
@@LondonGas Yes, you have improved this no doubt, why is a company allowed to sell this as a marine product when the olives supplied are not allowed on boats? mind does boggle at times. great video by the way im fitting one this weekend
Where do you buy in the Uk pls
As far as I know it's not for sale in the UK, I import mine from Canada. I'm in discussions with the company that makes it about becoming a UK distributor. If anything progresses with that I'll come back to you.
Nice one thanks
What's it like on actual Installs tho in tight areas
It requires a little pre-planning, compared to soldering. Sometimes have to crimp fittings in a different order, where space might be a constraint. They sell an additional 45° jaw adaptor for hard to reach places - called the Z8 Here's a link www.angliapipetools.co.uk/product/rems-z1-mini-press-adaptor-for-45-degree-578558/ Don't think I've ever had a fitting on site that I've not been able to use the mini press

really interesting can you please confirm new part l requirements for boiler service turbidity tube and test for inhibitors seems all that's needed and ph know that's not perfect
Thank you for the video! I would be interested to hear your honest opinion of the Adey Pro Check, with regards to testing central heating water on an annual service. I'm trying to figure out the best way to comply with the new regs and offer the correct advice to my customers, whilst keeping it realistic in terms of the time taken to test/cost involved. Or, do you think I would be better using a turbity tube, ph meter (or test strip) and inhibitor test strip to perform a 'quick' test?
I bought one of these valves and it fits perfectly between the gas bottle and the regular. The problem is that I don't have enough space in the gas cabinet of the campervan to put the bottle inside with such a setup... with the gas stop valve the entire setup sticks several centimeters to the side as seen in your video. So I am trying to find a 90 degree elbow connector so I can attach the regulator vertically (there is enough space on the vertical). I bough a W20 elbow connector from B.E.S and it doesn't fit (way too small). Went to several local heating and plumbing supply shops and nothing will fit. Any ideas what kind of elbow connector I can use? Thanks.
I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, I've never seen a POL Male to POL Female elbow, I think there's definitely a market for it. So you have the GasStop Valve, then the regulator, then the pipe supply - which sticks out too far. In that setup, I'd remote the regulator and mount it elsewhere. I'd have the GasStop valve connected to the cylinder, then a POL to W20 braided hose, connected to a mounted single wall block, and have the regulator connected to the single wall block, which in turn connects to the pipe supply. Wish I could post an image to better explain the setup but can't see that option on RUclips. I have a video on Twitter which shows the setup, I'll post the link below. I want to remake the video to include the single-cylinder Clesse OPSO CSR485 regulator. A change to the regulations now says all regulators must incorporate an OPSO, even for single cylinder setups. twitter.com/LondonGAS2/status/1408111495330869251?s=20&t=lxRIeUEaxGzPZxx0ouoTEQ
What rating should the regulator be for this grill? Is a calor patio gas regulator not appropriate? Thanks!
Hi Adam. 1kg of propane = 14.019 kWh (kilowatt hours) or 47300 BTU/h. This particular LYNX BBQ (C42PSR - 42") is 75,000 BTUs - so requires a larger regulator than the standard 1kg/h version. I used a 4Kg/h regulator. The rules in the UK have been amended since making this video, so now even a single appliance regulator must include an OPSO valve. I now use the Clesse CSR-485 OPSO regulator for all my LPG Firepit & BBQ installations.
@@LondonGas Fantastic, exactly the information I needed. Thanks very much for the prompt response!
@@adamberesford8475 My pleasure. The cylinder size is important also, cylinders have an "off take" rate. A 13Kg propane cylinder has an off-take rate of 1.075kg/hr or 15kW - which is too small for this particular LYNX BBQ. A 19Kg propane cylinder has an off-take rate of 1.344kg/hr or 18.8kW. Technically, if all burners were on maximum simultaneously, then even the 19Kg cylinder is slightly undersized for this grill, which is approx 21.9kW. For this grill I install two 13Kg/s cylinders with two POL to W20 braided hoses, joined together using a double wall-block. The double wall-block is connected to a single Clesse 4Kg/h CSR-485 OPSO regulator. With both cylinders open, I'm in effect doubling the 13Kg to a 26Kg cylinder.
@@LondonGas Great, really helpful information. I hadn’t considered this a factor, but my Viking BBQ has a similar BTU capacity to this lynx model, so is something I will certainly have to address. Thanks again! If you cover work in the Surrey area, I’ll be sure to contact you to use your services.

That has been very interesting and informative. One option you didn’t try was using a 3/8 nut and olive on the bubble tester. I have tried this before ( not on a bubble tester) with success. Thanks for your videos 👍

What’s the cost of this?

I have fitted a few bubble testers to narrowboats, I'd point out that if changing the fittings screwed into unit, go for 1/4 bsp parallel rather than the taper you used, you can then fit as factory, the o ring and liquid approved sealant, tapers can cause fatigue cracking.
Absolutely Clive. I bought the fittings based on advice from a marine chandlery I spoke to, before I took them apart. Was only after I took the old compressions off I learned they were parallel and not tapered. If I were to remake the videos I'd definitely source parallel 1/4" bsp wade fittings.
Brilliant videos, I'm having the same problem, but thanks to the videos I now know the way round it
Glad you found it helpful Jerry
Great series of videos, specially for those of us with 3/8" gas lines. But I need to ask what is the thread size needed to fit the Alde bubble tester? Thanks.
Hi Richard. It's a 3/8" compression X 1/4" BSPM T gasproducts.co.uk/3-8-inch-compression-x-1-4-inch-bspm-t.html
@@LondonGas Thank you 👍
So in a nutshell, 2 of the fitting in the link, a drop of liquid PTFE and you’re good to go? Much better than using badly fitting pipe inserts etc.
@@LondonGas Richard that is a tapered fitting, is it better a straight rather than taper as post earlier stated these can cause stress fracture and the original is a straight, so the o ring can also be refitted as original has that too.
Perfick!
Do propane gas cylinders require flashback arrestors?
Nope.
Generally not, Flashback arrestors are used when there maybe a back flow of either oxygen or a fuel gas into either line due to one of the tanks going empty causing an imbalance in pressure.
cheers for the video, finding it difficult to understand which fitting you used at the end. Was it 8mm to 3/8"? Cheers
3/8". The whole point of the excercise was to make the bubble tester compliant with Gas Safe and BSS standards.

Great appreciation of the need to use 'marine grade' copper - pity the job turned into a non-compliant disaster by use of a (taboo) BRASS olive !
Thanks for your input. I did write at the beginning on Video One that I would be creating deliberate faults throughout. There are THREE video in this series. If you watch video 3, you will see I conclude with a 3/8" adaptor using a copper olive. ruclips.net/video/cf4Q8r6F-W4/видео.html

Hi Thank you for posting this video it gave me a good idea to the actual size of the machine - do you know if the "REMS" jaws work with other manufactures tools - eg novo press or rothenberger ?? - thanks again
As far as I'm aware the REMS mini press jaws only fit the REMS mini press.
Ok thanks for the reply and your time
@@TradesDigital yes you are right about Mini Rems but the normal Rems work to other brand's also. cheers
Very good informative 3 videos. Professional . I think that the new insert is tapered.
Thanks Richard. My video making/editing skills have vastly improved since making these videos. They're too long with hindsight. Still, they give all the necessary info so I'll keep them up.
Did you buy or hire the tool & how much did it cost you.
I bought my kits for about 850 plus vat with 3 jaws and 2 batteries. I have owned a few press tools of various makes and this is the most versatile and fastest for domestic work!
Sorry for the late reply! Only 2 years late... I bought it outright. Cost me a small fortune, £895 including the 3 jaws. Plus Vat and delivery it came to £1,090. That was just for the REMS mini-press, I then had to buy stock of both Gas & Water Yorkshire X-Press fittings, varying sizes 15/22/28mm, 90 elbows, 45 elbows, straight couplers, tees, reducing tees, crossovers, endcaps etc... which cost an additional £1,000 on top of the REMS. Not cheap to get into it, but the benefits of being able to work on wet pipes, no hot works permit required and the speed increase of install make it worth it for me.
Are these valves commercially available?
I am an approved stockist if you'd like one?
I'm trying to fit a 3/8 copper tube into my air compressor's 10mm tank connection. I wonder if I can find a ferrule like the one in your second video or a connector piece that converts to 3/8 instead of 10mm.
Good video there and an excellent piece of kit.Pressfit is the future in my opinion.
A fantastic demonstration, thank you for sharing. Dan
Thanks Dan - Glad you like :)

Why are brass olives not permitted?
Copper olives are softer than brass and produce a better seal. Brass can harden in use and crack. The different expansion / contraction rates can lead to pulled and leaking joints. It's a legal requirement for marine LP Gas systems to use copper olives not brass - they should also have square edges, not long tapers, to form the best seal. Hope that helps.
Why son these just come in 3/8 that's the pipe needed to comply with bss
