Tyrrell & Green Department Store, Southampton UK
The former Tyrrell & Green department store in Southampton which is due to be demolished in the near future. The building was completed in 1956 and was home to John Lewis in Southampton until it moved to its current home in the West Quay shopping centre in 2000, the building has been empty since then.
Initially I was planning on taking some exterior shots, but I was fortunate enough to gain access to the interior, and here is the video to prove it. The video was taken on 28 July 2009 - the photographs of the outside were taken the following day.

I always loved that pattern on the escalators as a kid
Remember going here to get my school uniform for St Anne's. Those awful aertex shirts for PE. And Navy PE knickers 🤣
I worked in this store in 1998-99
When I left school in the fifties my first job was an apprentice in the ladies hair salon in Tyrrells I wasn't very good at it but I learnt how to sweep floors I stuck it for a year before leaving doing several jobs one was for Parkers in woolston picking up and delivering photos to be developed all around the Southampton area on a moped. Then working in a car wash in Grosvenor Square in that bitter winter in the early sixties and after that I got a job as a wine waiter in the yacht club in Northlands Road which was mainly cleaning the toilets and ironing /brushing the tables in the snooker room and serving wine in the restaurant and not forgetting polishing those two bloody brass cannons at the main entrance. But working there got me catering references to go to sea which was through the back door avoiding sea school through a relative who had friends in the union my first ship was the Queen Mary they were good days back then I spent most of my life in the merchant navy coming ashore for a few years and then back to sea again ending up in the RFA before being retired on medical grounds ending up agency working in the docks driving cars on and off the ships.
Knew every inch of the store and company. JLP look after there staff... and as for the parties well that is another story ...
Imagine the store at Xmas time years ago????bet itwaz wonderful.. any one tell me??
It still there??
No it was demolished and the site has been redeveloped :(
Used to get dragged around here clothes shopping after my dad had gone to moss bros which had an old fashioned lift. I remember the changing rooms at tyrells had a lot of natural light as were by the windows.
why the creepy music??
Childhood memories: the lift doors, the roof lights on the top floor, and loads of Jonelle towels and duvets. But the best bit was the Barova Restaurant (notice only the "o" and the "a" remain above the door in the video). It was always popular; usually you had to queue outside, sitting on a line of chairs and gradually shifting up until you reached the door. They had a great pudding menu. I remember a selection of sorbets was available, and once I was allowed to have the Knickerbocker Glory, served in a very tall glass with one of those long spoons!
It's good to see that someone managed this. I'd been checking it out every few weeks with no luck until they flattened it :|
great to see someone actually took some footage in here before it was pulled down, I like many remember that place, especially chidrens shoes on the 1st floor I think it was the bit near the café, although I swear I remember the lift doors being a snot green colour, not the dark brown glimpsed in the video!! Great video non the less I know urbexers who saw this place as the jewel in the crown that they never got to do!!
Great vid. What a state after only 8 years. Shame you didnt get a view of the accounts department. I remember it looking like it hadnt been decorated since the 1970's
also my mum worked there in the barova resterant, my grandad worked there for 30 years in carpets, it wasn't just a department store it was a family thing
i worked in the perfumery department in the early 90's, miss warren was my department manager, she was strict and quite scary mind you i was 17 at the time, she died a few years back probably before tyrrells was demolished, she used to say that the store would never move, its sad that they did its not the same, she taught me the customer was always right, and used too drone on an on, if only more bosses were like that and loved the job they did, shop assitants now are rude and uncaring
Good to hear you enjoyed the video! The store has totally gone now; it has been made into a small park/grassed area. The grassed area seems so small compared to how large the store was. Considering how important Tyrrell & Green was to Southampton I think it deserves an "on this spot stood..." plaque. Although perhaps I am just being overly sentimental :)
Wow, I worked in soft furnishings as a kid in 1970 and remember all the fun times. Now I'm a 60 year old living in Australia so thank you so much for showing me this and taking me back 43 years, quite emotional to think about the good times there with Mr. Simpkin, the manager of Soft Furnishings and all the great people.....I love it
My grandmother worked there for 30 yrs in soft furnishings
I was born in Southampton in 1962 and remember many a happy hour spent in the shop. We use to play in the park just near the store and use to nip in there to use the bathroom. On rainy days we spent nearly all day in there and got to know the staff, they were always nice to us and let us play with the toys. Thanks for taking us back in there, although it is sad to know it is now gone.
Great seeing the old store - pity the person shooting it appears to have St Vitas Dance and can't actually hold the camera steady. Otherwise excellent.
How amazing and weird it is to see Tyrell & Green like this !!! I was born in 1977 and have so many memories of going there as a child with my mum, dad and brother. We used to go every Saturday. I remember going to the shoe department with my mum to have my feet measured and buy my school shoes which I hated as she would always pick these awful blue leather t bar sandles !!!!!! We would always go to the resturant for dinner and queue up outside! They were great memories. Never be the same ! x
@xbeckieboox C&A!!! I am so with you on the Chanel No.5 memory, my mother still wears it :/
Thankyou so much for this! Brings back a lot of memories and makes me realise just how long ago it was! Used to get dragged around there, coming over from the Isle of Wight especially. Bloody stomp all the way up there and all the way back, all just because mother wanted her damn bloody pillows. Keep exploring! x
Great video. I was born in 1982 and have my earlies memories from about 1985 to about 1998 are being dragged around this store often on Thursday evenings (late opening) and at the weekends. Not that I didn't like it. I'm glad you got good old Cafe Barova (I think that's what it was called) at 1.40min. Remember queuing up outside it to get seated. Would often have buttered toast or toasted tea cakes. Also would have been nice to have videoed the books and sports bits and the stairs linking them.
I remember Tyrrel and Green,Plummers, C&A now im showing my age! . I loved it at christmas with all the traditional decorations and trees and lights. And the smel lof the perfume department as soon as you went in you got a waft of chanel no.5 Personnally I hate the west quay.Everything jammed in with loadsa people.
Lewis's in Liverpool is due to close down in June 2010. The stores design has been untouched since the 1950's, it also has two upper floors which have been closed off to the public since the early 1980's. These upper floors are quite literally a time capsule (a book has even been published on them.) It would be great to film the store before the developers change it forever.
Do you know anyone who can make a video like this of Lewis's in Liverpool. It is due to close down in June 2010. There are also two upper floors which have been closed off to the public since the early 1980's, they are quite literally a time capsule, (there has even been a book published on these forgotten floors). It would be great to capture the store on film before the developers get in and change it forever.
I am happy to hear you enjoyed the video. I also have those memories! To be honest, not going in when the opportunity presented itself would have been the more difficult option - when the building is gone I would have to think "I had the chance to see inside for one last time, but I didn't take that chance".
The site is very secure now, and a sizeable section has been demolished too. I think gaining access would be very difficult :(
Aww wow this is FAB..... Is there still access to the building now? I would love to go in...
very cool video 5*
hehehe....Cops wouldn't dare arrest me, I'm too dangerous :) No, seriously there was an open door and I walked in, there was nobody about to tell me that I wasn't allowed to look around.
I'm happy to hear you liked the video. Regarding permission to enter the building - I will message you directly.
Thanks. It is a big place and there is lots I missed out on, but I guess there is always next time :)
