One of the things to consider is that the default VSL settings, for their preset, have the reverb set to quite short and dry. If you still have the original project, you could try replacing it with the Lush mix preset, at least for the strings. It makes much difference. VSL strings also have a very fast attack, so either choosing the soft attack patch, or slightly slowing it with the Attack slider could help.
Cubase is stupid! The Mix layout in Cubase does not display the fader channels properly. Only way to get Mix fader channel control for each instrument is to load individual instances of Kontakt for each instrument in VEP. You failed to cover this point. This means you must... use one instance of Kontakt for each instrument if you want independent control in Cubase Mix page of the instrument's post-process, like EQ, compression, reverb, etc. The Mix faders that are MIDI have no accessable EQ, or reverb sends, etc., for mixing. Even Cakewalk SONAR had the ability to apply FX to the MIDI faders. I think Pro Tools does also.
FYI: Expression Maps are now also available as of Cubase Artist 13. They were introduced in Cubase (Studio) 5.0.1 in 2009 aka Cubase Pro thereafter.
I wanted to see how you routed the multiple Racks to your VEP outputs. You could have shown us just one more added Rack connected to a 2nd VEP instance like shown in your finished template. I can get Cubase to connect to my 2nd instance in VEP, but I can't figure out how to get Cubase to recognize my 2nd instance outputs from VEP.
2nd intro not related melodically to the theme, but DOES use the chord progression! 😊
Last time through the theme in this video shows it clearly.
This is the best video on this topic that I've seen. I'll be using it in my classes in the years to come, so please don't remove it! You clarify some things that were missing from Adler's orchestration text.
Appreciate that, David!
@@AlexHeppelmann It is a really well done video. It is interesting how the composer often leaves it up to the player to figure out what they want, rather than writing in a string number to make it clear (however cumbersome that might be). For instance, in the Andrew Norman example, in bar three, there is a harmonic on G4, which could just as easily be interpreted as touching the G string at the octave, as touching the D string at the perfect fourth.
Whats going on ? :) Alex we need more fantastic (like this two you did already) comparing videos. I think would be awesome to finally go to some film music or before that maybe try some jazz/musical many options here. We need more ;)
Thank You!
Bottom Line = If you have the DAW skills, ALL are capable of excellent results. Especially for Film/Cinematic music. However, a full library like BBCSO Pro and VSL Synchron, the results can be better due to extensive articulations.
Very good
the legato's are interrupted often, with little pauses, like this midi is from a notation program into the daw. Not taking into consideration of flowing of notes per midi (legato programming)
Hi. Nice video. I prefer VSL! Please ease off on the Basses. Their sound fill the stage far too much robbing the timbre of the other instruments. NotePerformer is not too bad either. All your VSTs you demoed will sound excellent if worked on. For those curious of NotePerformer 4.5. follow the link here and discover the magic of NotePerformer 4.5.0. I cannot recall any VST sounding like a recording like this. The music in the linked video was produced by Dorico 5.1 Pro driving NotePerformer 4.5.0. The music performance can still be tweaked using Dorico's MIDI lanes, but the listener will definitely hear how NotePerformer is not this 'in-between', medium quality VST as some claims. NotePerformer has a lot of power, if one knows how to use its magic! ruclips.net/video/QfHQ5ZM4BaE/видео.html
Thanks for this video, Alex. You do not explain the 'Groups' you created. Why are there 4 'Groups' of articulations and how does that help? And did you end up having only 'Direction' entries or some entries with 'Attribute'?
Using groups can make the expression map more efficient if you have dozens of articulations, as is the case in a lot of OT libraries or VSL libraries. For instance, if every sustain patch can also be a legato patch, and also has the option of either vibrato or non-vibrato, then I can establish groups that trigger 'legato on', or 'con vibrato'. This is only necessary because there are so many potential sound variations. I'm essentially copying VSL's articulation tree structure from their Synchron libraries if you're familiar. Ultimately it's saves a lot of space in the articulation lane in Cubase. You might instead use a CC number for things like vibrato or trill interval size.
Mahalo, Alex! I will experiment with this.
Is there's any way to import it to cubase with the same sounds you had in dorico? Let's say kontakt and ect.?
Noteperformer is amazing particularly with its ability to replicate many string section articulations. I’ve done some similar professional work to this where I had to “compete” with the composer’s Noteperformer mockup. Section strings were definitely the biggest challenge.
I would've loved to compare it to the Cinematic Studio Series. Many People say, they are the best orchestral Sample Library and i've heard great demos.
Hello and thanks for such a great video tutorial! But I have a problem at the beginning. When you select the midi port for the vein, you have an option with 8 ports (ruclips.net/video/erz5GakWtiY/видео.htmlsi=xzdsE2jhFVRokGxU&t=381), but i have only one. Where can i fix it? Thank you!
I started with SA but rapidly invested in OT and VSL: "Beauty is in the ear of the Beholder" :)
Great course👍🏻, but how does one actually get the VSL discount? I don’t see anything like a coupon on the course page.
There are instructions in Ch.1.4 about the discount!
Ok, found it. Thanks. I’ll try the demo first to see if it adds enough value over Synchronized SE to warrant the price.
@@nickie_katharina_foenshauge good idea! hope you're enjoying the course so far!
I am enjoying it. From what I have seen so far it is thorough and succinct, both qualities I appreciate. Well done! 👍🏻
Magisterial. You lost me a bit, however, when you started talking about making a default legato -- I even slowed down the playback speed and watched it a few times but still got a bit lost in there (I assume "ord" means "ordinary" which is synonomous with "normal" so I'm unclear why the redundant jargon Cubase employs here). Thank you very much :)
I used the word default legato because the OT instrument has multiple types of legato (ordinary/normal, and also fast/runs). I want the expression map to default to ordinary if I simply select 'legato' in my articulation window, because the ordinary legato will be used far more often than a runs/fast legato patch.
That was excellent. Thank you!
That was very interesting! I thought the two OT libraries sounded particularly good, but I thought they were too clean and didn't feel like ‘live instrument sounds’. The Spitfire sounds, especially the BBCSO, were too realistic and kind of captured the nasty bits of live instruments. I have a BBSCO pro and it sounds great, so I guess it's all about use in the end, but I'm getting tired of it taking too long for adjusting and mixing, so I'll probably buy one of the OT products when I get the chance. Thanks for the great comparison video! P.S. If you're going to use it for writing a classical music or submitting university assignments like I do, I'd recommend the BBCSO or SSO. The SSO in particular has a lot of articulations and my friends love it.
Synchron Duality Strings are just a blurry mess. All the detail of the strings is smeared away with the blending gimmick. It sounds like a mellotron. Would much have preferred Synchron Strings Pro here.
2 sentences can form a large period...which is what I think we have with the main theme.
Hi Alex, I know I'm late but can't thank you enough for this super duper interesting way of applying harmonic series to the practical world. I've got a request: I can see this video is classical/neoclassical music composition oriented, but what about applying this spacing concept to "simpler" arrangements as in pop/rock/electronic music? Do you have any score in mind where we can analyse the same concept applied there?
The basic principles of acoustics will apply no matter what, but the details will change. Unfortunately I have very little experience arranging pop/rock/electronic, so I can't point to specifics. Song producers and mixers talk all the time about specific amounts of energy within a frequency range (sub-bass, bass, mids, etc...) but I have no idea if they talk about chord voicings with the harmonic series in mind.
best explaination ever on YT. Thank you!
Even for me as an amateur this is very i interesting and motivating. Thank you so much Alex - highly appreciated!
at the 2:00 mark it sounds like something from joe hisaishi's piano stories albums
Thank you for your demonstration. I have question: Will this also working with Sibelius Ultimate?
Hey, great video! How is your work progress when composing a piece? What kind of software do you use at what specific steps? Sometimes I find it very difficult to visualize my score when writing in programs like Cubase where only the midi tracks are shown. But when using MuseScore or other software that illustrates the score all at once in actual notes, I find myself spending very much time transferring a score into Cubase etc, to have it played by e.g. Berlin Orchestra or other VST instruments. Thank you for your help
Are you running this with a second computer server?
this is so helpful, how didnt i find this channel until now
Basic question. If you touch a string at the 1/2 point, you hear the octave harmonic because, it is said, the string is vibrating in two halves. When you touch the string at the 1/3 point, why do you hear the sound of the string vibrating in 1/3s? Why don't you hear the sound of 1/3 and the sound of 2/3? In other words, why isn't 1/3 of the string vibrating at one frequency, and 2/3 of the string vibrating at a lower frequency?
Since reverb can be adjusted in NPPE, I wonder how VSL would sound with more ambience.
Ty so much for this. Special Bows is the exact library i was looking for
VSL sounded much worse than the others in my opinion. I think BBC sounded best here, with Berlin coming in 2nd.
What happened to the "Prime Library" examples (which I am currently shopping in consideration for)?
Was this "Scanned" into Dorico by chance? Not judging... I'm just new to this and wondering if Dorico allows scanning.
Any chance you would share your template?
How do you get the controller lanes to show all at the same time on the bottom of the piano roll?
Wonderful tutorial!👏👏👏
Nice work mister. Thank you for elegant inspiration
Beautiful work Alex! Great orchestration details. Appreciate you sharing this very much.
What a superb sonic tapestry you've created here, Alex. The piece brilliantly mirrors the title's subject matter: water and light. I'm anxious to hear the 2nd and 3rd movements! ~ Kevin J.
Thanks, Kevin. This is just the first section of the first movement -- still a ways to go!
Beautiful and tender🤩
Thank you!
To me the long high violin notes from 2:23 to 2:39 sound very synth-y and unnatural. I wonder why that is. You'd think long sustained notes would be the easiest ones to sample so that they sound like what they're supposed to sound like.
This is stunning! Did you have to set up the expression maps for all those libraries yourself?
Thanks! Although it looks like the audio is straight from Dorico, I actually exported the MIDI from Dorico, then added the correct keyswitches in cubase.
Lovely, Alex!
Thanks!
Beautiful piece. Superb orchestration
Thank you!
Lovely piece! Thanks for sharing, and for the corresponding sheet music! :)
