That power station was built by Sir William MacKenzie to supply the Toronto Railway Company with electricity for streetcars. It was "nationalized" by Adam Beck who controlled Ontario Hydro, and wanted to advance his political career by providing "power at cost". Read "The Railway King of Canada" by Rae Fleming for more. The TRC became the TTC in 1921.

It's such a waste that the power plant isn't running. Hydropower is cheap and clean.

...and if you collect the manure and put it through a biodigester, you can collect the resulting methane and process it to create LBG--liquid biogas--which can be use to fuel generators/vehicles/etc.

This one's tail races discharge behind the falls. This would be an awesome experience if it could be enjoyed by tourists.
