Only 3 hours free in Durban! Come along and see what I got up to!
Просмотров 28428 дней назад
Hi guys Had one free morning on a recent short trip down to Durban. Tried to maximise it by going out to the Ushaka/Moyo pier for some landscape shots and then to the botanical gardens for some birding. How much could I squeeze into just 3 hours? One new lifer, some very special birds and a little bit of excitement!

Quick review of the new Nikon Z6iii as a mid range bird and wildlife camera

At the beginning of August I got the opportunity to give the latest Nikon mirrorless camera a hands on test out in the wild, aka Rietvlei Nature Reserve, our favourite urban reserve. The camera performed quite admirably given it was my first time shooting on the new Nikon mirrorless systems. Although it is a mid range camera it felt quite hefty in my hands and outweighs even my A1. I was really...

Hi guys At the beginning of June we made a mad dash to the border of South Africa and Botswana to get the tail end of the Pel's Fishing owl breeding season. We visited the Limpokwena lodge (based on the Limpopo and Mogalakwena rivers) who had been posting terrific sightings of the Pel's Fishing owl to their social media pages. With just and afternoon and morning drive to hopefully find the owls...

Hi Roberto. Thanks for your comment. Maybe you can explain for the viewers how the tracking works for the autofocus. I think the Z9 is a beast of a camera and must be such a joy to shoot with the 180-600. I also like the Nikon PF line up so the 800 i'm sure will do well for birds. It looks like the only time I may be in the park is 25-29 September but will you know.

awesome stuff man. i live in california but my family bought a share on a property at olifants west. we are right on the river and we actually had a pels in a natal mahogany in our backyard last year it was insane! my dad got some great footage. Also if you haven already, you should check out the swadini waterfall hike in blyde river canyon. I get Trogon everytime, last year i got a crowned eagle on a nest, half collared kingfisher, green twinspot and so many other good ones. i have yet to see a finfoot, though our next door neighbors have seen them passing down the olifants
Thanks so much! Oh wow sounds so exciting! Would love to come and bird there some time! I must also check out the Swadini waterfall hike, sounds like a good one to do. We actually eventually got the Pels in June this year, the video will hopefully be up soon as well!

Is November lot of rain in Kruger? Will the bush be dense
@@RG....... the rainy season starts in October for the Kruger so there may well be rain around however the bush will be green but not very thick yet. I find November a very good time to get to the Kruger because the birds are out and active and you will get lots of babies of the bush in the second half of the month as well
Very informative video, this is definitely an inspiration to visit the KTP one day If i go i would like to try a straight drive from jhb maybe leave around 3am, and what are the camp gates open times this time of the year?
Thanks Dude! The gate times are as follows - will also add to the video description Jan/Feb 6:00-19:30 March 6:30-19:00 April 7:00-18:30 May 7:00-18:00 June/July 7:30-18:00 Aug 7:00-18:30 Sep 6:30-18:30 October 6:00-19:00 Nov/Dec 5:30-19:30 The drive from Johannesburg should take just about 12 hours with stops so to get to Twee Rivieren from Johannesburg would just require a 5am departure time
@@SouthAfricanWanderer Dec/Nov seems to be the best time for more game viewing time.
@@XipandzaMananga it’s also the hottest so the big cats aren’t active through most of the day. There is a chance of rain though as well so maybe the park is green which is always better
A wonderful series of videos on the KTP! Thank you!
@@shaunpeard2799 thanks so much 🙏🏼
if you want as less as possible atmospheric distortion and heat haze, your camera lens is better off out your window when taking photo or video rather than from inside your car. I once took pics of a secretary bird from inside my car......what a disapointment🥴 not one was sharp.
do you know if one can just go during off season with a camper trailer or must one book?
@@stefanusrheeder4162 you have to book as most of the camps are fully booked 11 months ahead. Twee Rivieren may be the only camp with availability and you can also check for last minute cancellations about 30 days before on the SANParks website
@@SouthAfricanWanderer thanks for the info I will book then. enjoy your day.😁
Can you do this if you have vertigo?
Yes I think that should be possible - there aren't any paths along ridges and you can keep looking forward and up so it should be fine. However I used the cable car coming back down which i would definitely not recommend if you have vertigo because not only is the cable car moving down the mountain it also rotates to give everyone a 360deg view. If you come back down using this route I am also not sure how much it would trigger the vertigo as I have only ever climbed up.
I’d love to see this with its true nature sounds. Lovely footage.
It is amazing! Definitely a bucket list item you should get to do. The summer is better for the sounds with all the migratory birds adding to the beautiful sunset scenes!
I have two questions. Can you pay everything with a mastercard? and ( no joke) can i buy a head like yours in the shop at the hotel, maybe a shirt too ?
Hi there, yes the hotel as well as the park gate and the large camps all have car facilities. With no loadshedding they work perfectly fine and we have had no loadshedding for more than 100 days now! Did you mean my hat? Yes you can get that either at the hotel which has a small shop or in the park itself. Skukuza camp which is about 11km away has probably the biggest shop in the park and you can get different designs - just ask for the bucket hat.
Thank you for sharing. Any tips on camping solo in National Parks?
@@izakgreyling8872 I’m thinking I should put together a video on some of the tips and tricks for the Kgalagadi in particular. I think mostly I’ve camped solo in the larger camps. With the Kgalagadi there is the option to camp in unfenced camps, which I haven’t been brave enough to do and I’m sure is a different prospect altogether. Camping in the big camps solo isn’t too bad, I think the main thing is to be prepared for the weather conditions. The Kgalagadi is hot and a fan would be a good option. Other than that the large camps have most things you will need and you can also make friends with the neighbors as well
Thanks!
