SILY 625 Committing to Growth
During the second quarter of a football game last season as the crowd was raucously cheering on the home team, my friend leaned over to me and said, “Can I ask you a question?” “Sure,” I said. “What’s the secret to raising girls?” Of all the questions he could have asked me in that moment, I never would have guessed that would be it.

SILY 624 The Obsolete Man

The fact is, AI and robotics are coming. If they haven’t already started to change or disrupt some part of your life, it’s only a matter of time before they do. For me, I’ve discovered ways to use AI to better my skills and provide improved services to my clients. But I’ve barely scratched the surface of how AI can be used in my industry. It’s challenging because AI is changing quickly and what...
SILY 623 Remembering Happy Accidents

As a parent, I have tried very hard to keep this principle in mind. I haven’t always been good at keeping my emotions in check so that I can assess the situation objectively, but when I have been able to check myself, my kids and myself have been better for it. We are all going to mess up and cause accidents, especially the youngest among us.
SILY 622 Navigating the Nativity

Many depictions of the Christmas story include the wise men at the manger most likely for the sake of simplicity. That doesn’t mean the Bible is incorrect, but that depictions of the story are incorrect. What some skeptics do consider to be a contradiction is the differences in where the family lived and traveled after Jesus was born. Are these indeed contradictions that disprove the Biblical s...
SILY 621 Finding Freedom Through Forgetting

Elephants do indeed have excellent memories. If you’re like me, you think of this fact as a good thing. That is, if someone says you have a memory like an elephant, you’d take it as a compliment. Today I’m going to flip that on its head, show how it can be a negative, and hopefully help you examine your own life to see if you have a memory like an elephant.
SILY 620 Avoiding the Rocky Path

John looked at my problem and offered up his idea of the best solution. Like C-3PO I looked at that path as too rocky. Not only was it more than I had the budget for, I knew that building the app was just the beginning. I’d have to keep a developer on retainer for bug fixes, updates, and security management. I didn’t want to be in the software development business. So I looked for a smoother path.

Growing up I always enjoyed adventure and platforming games best while my brother enjoyed sports games best. In fact, whether it was in physical sports we played in the yard or virtual sports we played via video games, I never once beat my brother. That is, until one day while spending the weekend with our grandparents we rented Joe Montana Football. That fateful day I discovered he was unable ...
SILY 618 Lessons From a Chocolate Factory

We had each channeled our inner Grandpa Joe and allowed the alluring wonders of a chocolate factory to serve as our motivation for getting out of bed that day. After a quick stroll down the pier to meet up with our driver, we soon found ourselves standing at the curb of Graycliff Chocolatier. Once inside we were given protective gowns and hair nets. I first assumed these were to protect the cho...
SILY 617 Following Your Gut

Whether it’s your heart, brain, or gut, there’s definitely something to be said about these intuition moments. I’ve used my gut to make thousands of decisions over the course of my life, some of which I was very aware of how my gut played into the decision, and I’m sure many others where it happened so naturally that I didn’t even realize it. I’m sure you’re the same way too. Today I want to sh...
SILY 616 Procrastinating Your Day Away

Maybe we should start our own procrastinators anonymous group. They say the first step to recovery is acknowledging you have a problem so here goes: My name is Darrell Darnell and I’m a procrastinator. Feel free to acknowledge your procrastinating too if it seems fitting. For me, I find myself procrastinating mostly around one of two types of tasks. Those tasks are anything related to invoicing...
SILY 615 Seizing the Incredible

When we face uncertain times, we are wise when we tap into the experience of others who have walked down the road before. We have to face our fears and move forward. Once we make that decision to move forward, it’s best if we have a friend and confidant to hold us by the hand and carry us through. We don’t need to go through those experiences alone, and we’re much better off when we have that t...
SILY 614 Professing Your Faith

In case you’re wondering if there was a time in my life when I was a pastor that I’ve not shared with you before, I have not. In fact, I have never been in full time ministry. With an episode title of Professing Your Faith, you might think that this episode is about how to tell other people about Jesus. Whether you think that episode topic is a good one or not, that’s not where I’m going today....

Back in episode 597 I mentioned that I sold my beloved 1972 MGB GT. For those of you who have followed me on social media for a while, you may have seen me first mention that I sold it back in February of this year, and a few days later I first mentioned that I’d actually purchased its replacement last October, fixed that car up, and had been driving it ever since. So WHY did I sell my dream ca...
SILY 611 Beating Yesterday

I think we’ve all been in a situation where either we as kids or when we were older with kids of our own ran into someone that we hadn’t seen in a while. Maybe it was a family member at a reunion or perhaps it was an old friend at the grocery store. Either way, that person looks at the kid and is surprised at how much they’ve grown. Even us as parents can have this experience with our own kids ...

SILY 598 Showing Respect to Authority
Is there a Spiritual Component...there could be...when you deny yourself...is that a reach...Lord knows:) Adam
Me too! A Trick by Accident I seemed to discover was similar to telling yourself you are NOT you but Mr Employee or The Work Guy but not you! Somehow it freed my anxiety! On your Journeys you might have done that and realized a breath or two or three! Even approaching people became unburdening and thinking clearer was a delight...maybe why we have "Avatars" today!😊
Great point. I recently visited my company head quarters in MO. It's so beautiful there with great fishing and immaculate crystal clear rivers/ streams. But I was so tired from work physically and mentally with all the new information I was trying to soak in. I pretty much went straight to bed after work for almost a full week. Sad but maybe next time I'll be able to take in the beauty
Very nice! Thanks brother you did great!!!
Thank you!
Wow what a great tribute to my dear mom. Thank you so much. Love you brother
Thank you, Brian!
Great job, Darrell. Listened to the audio, but I had to hop on and tell you how impactful this episode was. Amazing tribute.
Thanks, Bradley!
Great tribute to Kay. I know it was a tough show to do, but you did a great job. Kay would be happy and proud of the job you did. She would also be excited for what Dave and the kids had to say about her.
Thanks, Nate!
Country Artist Josh Turner- Hometown Girl wrong lyrics"She Couldn't hide her Beauty with a Baseball Bat.." correct, " She Couldn't Hide Her Beauty with a Baseball Cap..." Working at a New Country Format Radio Station for over 15 years I might hear that song a few times a day.
Very well written Darrell! "Showing Off" yes even after we think we have become mature things happen! Took some guts to talk about and brings me some comfort for some of my hijunx. Lord Bless Yas!
Great recounting of your personal story. You've touched a lot of lives.
Great video
Very very terrific to see you know your Scripture Darrell! Indeed Genesis 3:16b THAT Crazy Curse does cause so much trouble for those who have no knowledge of it!
I don't think Kingsberry is part of Bob Stoops tree. However great show!!!!
You're right. Not sure why I said he was. Thanks for catching that.
Great video!!!!! I love this so much!!!
Thank you!
Great show today!!!
Thanks!
It's 2LATEIWON mechanically approved
Love this episode. You've done a great job
Thanks, Brian!
I stumbled upon this while scrolling through my suggestions, and the title caught my attention. Your story was so sweet, I was actually tearing up here at work. I was an older fan, so I was in my senior year of high school when they exploded on the scene. I absolutely loved them: recorded the songs every time they came on the radio, watched every interview, etc....(I actually still have a recording of one of the radio commercials for the MagiCan!) My friends and I lip-synced to My Favorite Girl at our talent show, we took a limo to one of their shows, we went HARD! I endured a lot of teasing from classmates (mostly the guys) and a bunch of them even made little snarky comments when they signed my senior yearbook, but I didn't care. I loved the New Kids. Fast forward to their reunion....I was elated! Ironically, one of the guys who teased me the most about liking the New Kids is now one of the people who's always Facebooking me mentioning them, and sending me "Happy Birthday" on my birthday. But one of the best parts is: I went to a show Jordan did with Nick Carter, and the next morning, he had a brunch where he signed autographs and stuff. I brought my yearbook with me, and showed him where one of my friends had wrote: "maybe one day your dreams will come true and you'll meet NKOTB." Jordan actually signed my yearbook right by that, saying, "Dreams do come true!" They're just the sweetest guys and so humble and loving to their fans. I'm so happy you were able to see them since their reunion, and hope you can go to a show this summer. I'm going to see them on my birthday and managed to get front row center, so I'm HELLA STOKED!! BLOCKHEAD FOR LIFE!!!
What a great story and encounter with Jordan!! I hope you have THE BEST time at the concert this summer.
Ha ha ya know what Darrell? I was the kid in high school that hated New Kids when they came out simply because they stole all the girls attention and I was jealous! But secretly I liked the music. As of this writing I currently have their new album "Still Kids" in my car playing the first release "Kids" on repeat. Man I LOVE that song. It's so catchy, fun and full of life. It really sinks in the lesson if never having to grow up, keep playing, keep being a kid no matter how old you are. That's all there is to life. Everything else will be fine. Side note, if you have never seen their videos for Remix or Bring Back the Time, I urge you to go watch them NOW. Two absolutely amazing songs and videos!
Just watched the video for Remix. I knew the song, but I'd never seen the video. Hilarious!
I'm going to my first NKOTB concert this summer in Dallas, ate age 45. My date? My 14 year old bonus daughter. I've been embarrassed that I feel like I've fallen down the rabbit hole of wanting to relive my childhood. Maybe that's partly true- but it's also bc I simply like who they've become. I like the new music, I like the charisma and that they seem genuinely humbled to be accepted back into the music fold. I will remember this concert for a long time to come.
I agree that it's been fun to see them evolve. You're going to have a great time! I'm so excited for you!
I had SOME similar experiences to you growing up, but I never allowed myself to be shamed into hiding my love for NKOTB, and my family very much supported my fandom. Even after most of my NKOTB memorabilia was gone or in storage, I always kept a Jordan magnet on the radiator by my bed until I moved in 2013 and it got lost in the move. But I still have my old NKOTB poster in a tote in the attic, and a book with the entire trading card collection on a shelf in my room. I never got to go to a NKOTB concert either, but only because my family couldn't afford it. BUT it turns out my mom loves NKOTB too (She even watches Donnie on Blue Bloods and Jon on HGTV), and today I finally bought tickets for the Magic Summer 2024 concert, and this August I am finally taking my 73 year old mother to see them live for her very first concert (of any kind) ever! I even ordered us both NKOTB t-shirts to wear. It's so exciting!
I LOVE that you're going to get to see them in August with your mom! You guys are going to LOVE IT!
I knew I wouldn't get through this season without crying. I felt this one deeply. Thank you so much for sharing. 💙
Thanks, Faith. This one got me choked up again too when I listed back to it this week.
Ya got me crying and sending you and your wife a HUG! Your kids love you both so much!! And with all you do you managed to still be encouraging to me! Thank you!
Thanks, Adam. I'm glad you found the episode encouraging!
Thank you for entering into this type of discussion. Indeed there are many who do not recognize allegory, metaphor and parable. The Bible can be challenging, especially in the times we live in. As difficult as it may be, I recognize value in it. 2 Timothy 3:16 King James Version (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness... Even those verses that cause many to cringe and recoil, because it shows us how differently we all process our reality..
With all of the hateful, bigoted, genocidal, misogynistic, murderous and outright baseless claims of the supernatural made by that book ... Taking it literally would be dangerous for everyone.
The Bible does contain most of those things (bigoted, genocidal, misogynistic, murderous) but it does not endorse them. Is there a specific passage you'd like me to address in a future episode?
@@StuffILearnedYesterday-vg7pi ("...but it does not endorse them") not only does the bible endorse it...the god of the bible commanded or caused it in many cases. Slavery as well. Condoned by god in the bible, yet never condemned in the same book.
@@StuffILearnedYesterday-vg7pi dont forget the bible also condones slavery.
Hi and thanks for the video. As a want to be Christian I wanted to take you up on your offer to discuss context on a troubling Bible verse. I want to be clear that I am being very honest here. There are many verses that are difficult for me and have caused great division in my family. I have listed a few and would greatly appreciate a response. Thank you in advance. Exodus 35:2 Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. Matthew 10:34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and a man's enemies will be the members of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me." Psalm 137:9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. Deuteronomy 32:42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. Luke 19:27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’
Thank you very much for the comment and for sending over these passages. I'll do my best to tackle them on the next Monday Mailbag.
Thanks again for sending over these verses. I covered most of them in today's episode. ruclips.net/video/pcMWugy2RFI/видео.html
I really hope not! If you take the bible literally the you have to believe woman came from a dudes rib, there was a worldwide flood, the earth is 6000 years old, can’t eat shellfish, people lived to 600+ years, slavery is ok and my favorite… we can all scapegoat all our wrongs on to another. The bible and other ancient religions are no more than what they were intended to be, man’s first attempt to explain the world around us.
Awesome job as always! Loved hearing everyone’s feedback!
I don’t know how you do it, but it seems like every Monday there is an episode that I needed to hear. Thanks for this!
Oh Darrell..Mr Fred would be stuck in my craw- knowing I strive for good Customer Service and perplexed here! Maybe he felt he was ignored not because of your proactive attempts but something happening in his world. Praying that he is ok!
Thanks for the future parenting advice. Bravo 👏👏👏
Needed this today!
Great video
Thanks!
Enjoyed today's episode. Love your show and listening to your stories!!!!
Great episode! My family didn’t start out going to church, but I went with my grandpa and eventually my parents started going.
Men leading their families by going to church is a significant positive influence! Sounds like both of our grandpas filled that role.
Glad to see SILY return!
Loved this episode!
Thanks, Bradley!
Another great episode!!!
Thanks, Nate!
I love the idea of breaking it down into categories. I can see how that would be, easier to focus on the topic within that category. Great video
Thanks, Brian!
My Dear Brother Yessire I had been praying for your heart back when that HE would give you Opportunities to share that you would know and proceed confidently and Joyfully! I. had not listened to Dan's Radio Show for years,.hard news to hear- he was always upbeat! PTL he still is! So I have some tears for loss as I pray for his family and I have tears for for you seeing your discipline in action! I'm a tad older than you- 62 in September so I'm proud of.ya Kid! You such a decent and considerate man:) Thank you! Ad
