You have to progress a bit from the first bonfire in this area. There should be some sort of circular room with 3 phoenix knights (those big dudes with the golden armor) one of them should have a sword and shield, one should have a hammer and the last one should have a greatsword. The hammer and greatsword guys should be standing at two pathways. You might have to kill all three in order for the summon sign to show up

Honestly I thought he was kinda fun but yeah it might've been because I used a lighter weapon. I can see why he would be bad with a heavier one
