      @@chuckandrews7850 I hope you’ll send a message once in a while. My email is jlfmd45@gmail.com. I would love to take some more courses but travel is getting harder for us! Do you still go to Arizona? I’ve made a lot of buckets. They are in demand for movies, theater and re- enactments. So I started doing the white oak hoops several years ago using Ruedi Kohler’s video as a guide. There aren’t many people making wooden hoops other than by using willow wyths. I had a white oak log so why not? It took a while to get it right, especially getting the correct circumference. His suggestion of adding 7mm doesn’t work! Using green wood, riving with a froe and staying on the same growth ring with the draw knife cuts down on the bending problems. I’ve made probably several hundred and I found most people will let them dry out and the hoops would slip down. So I started pegging each hoop to the staves with three hickory pegs. The hoops might loosen but they don’t fall off! I also started super drying the stave blanks in my homemade kiln before planing the edge bevels. Much like drying the tenons in a Windsor chair stretcher. I haven’t had expansion problems when the wood is wet and it doesn’t appear to case harden when it shrinks back down again. Stay healthy and keep in touch. Say hello to your wife-- I still remember her fruit salad at the picnic at the barrel course! John

    Hi John, great series. Is that a Clifton 500 spoke shave you are using to finish hollowing or maybe a heel shave?

    • @johnfreemanmd1728
      @johnfreemanmd1728 3 года назад

      Yes, it is a Clifton and it’s about the only time I’ve used it! To be honest I usually skip that step and leave the concave side as it comes from the drawknife. I can get close enough to the line with the drawknife and then smooth it down, after it’s assembled, with a hollowing plane. It’s easy to get a stave too thin at this early stage and it’s really an unnecessary step. John

    • @kilderken7401
      @kilderken7401 3 года назад

      @@johnfreemanmd1728 Yes, although sometimes a spoke shave does offer more control and finesse over a draw knife or even a hollowing plane. Either way, your buckets look amazing.

  • @charlierecyclist
    @charlierecyclist 3 года назад

    Hi John, love your work! I aspire to craft a bucket like that one day. Question - curious how you initially lay out the bucket staves? Do you have a pattern you scribe on the end grain? And how do you account for the taper of the bucket in your layout?

    • @johnfreemanmd1728
      @johnfreemanmd1728 3 года назад

      Yes there is a pattern. Draw two concentric circles the outer circle’s radius is the circumference you want for the top of the bucket divided by 2π (Ct /6.28 ) and the inner circle radius is Ct- Th ( the thickness of the stave). I usually make 12 staves. 360°/12 is 30° so draw a radius to any point on the outer circle and then another at 30° The segment you’ve drawn is the top end of a stave. Do the same for the bottom. The length of a stave is the slant height of the bucket. After drawing on the ends of the stave blanks just connect the corners with a pencil line to get the taper. Clear as mud? Maybe I’ll make a video

  • @kilderken7401

    Hi John great vids. May I ask what are your dimensions for the hoops? Just width and thickness. Thanks.

    • @johnfreemanmd1728
      @johnfreemanmd1728 4 года назад

      KilderKen Thanks, The hoops are 1” wide (or 25 mm), the thickness is 8 or 9 mm and sometimes , if the wood is stiff I’ll shave it to 7 mm The best wood is white oak freshly cut in the Spring but I’ve used wood from a log that had been In the field for a year. And if you get the log from a log yard, who knows when the tree was cut!

    • @johnfreemanmd1728
      @johnfreemanmd1728 4 года назад

      KilderKen This vid shows Ruedi Koehler making this joint. And you can google him and get detailed instructions. It took me about fifty to get it down but I still break a lot and miss the correct circumference ruclips.net/video/v4kB7JOVkqw/видео.html It does seem thick but if you go thinner the female joint gets weak and may break. Ask me how I know! I’ve shaved the hoop , not the joint ends down to 4 mm but it looks funky to me. Of course you can use a different joint and go thinner and bend much easier.

    • @johnfreemanmd1728
      @johnfreemanmd1728 4 года назад

      KilderKen At the risk of boring you to death... I no longer measure very often the thickness. I first shave the one inch wide hoop blank to 3/8” using a go no go gauge then I shave what will be the upper side to about 1/4” only one face is beveled. I test the bendyness and shave it thinner if it is stiff but try to leave the 1/4” on what will be the female end.

  • @johnfreemanmd1728
    @johnfreemanmd1728 4 года назад

    Thanks Phil for your kind comments. I too use the flax meal sometimes. I try really hard to get a good tight fit with the head in the croze and I’ve found the best joints are those when the diameter at the croze is less than 1/16” out of round. I have been cutting a piece of wood whose length is the diameter I’m shooting for and spin it at the croze line and take off the high spots until I get it round. One day I may make a bucket Howell plane...maybe. The Matthew Walker knot is a traditional sailors stopper knot and easy to tie! I’ve found most people don’t use or mist the bucket so I worry about loosening. I’ve started putting four 3/16” pegs in each hoop but not all the way through the stave.. just to keep the oak hoops on if the staves shrink.
