Helene damage hike to Uncle Nick's monument, Shady Valley, TN 10/19/24
This is what to expect on the AT in TN after Helene tore through.
I hiked out to Uncle Nick Grindstaff's monument from TN91/Cross Mountain Rd. It is about 3.5 miles of blowdowns, root ball damage, debris and jumbled messes. At least 100 blowdowns, not including the jumbled messes that required diverting off of the trail to get around.
There is 134 miles of this in TN. Forest Service personnel have been diligently working, also in NC and VA. It will take a long time to clear and repair.
If you do venture out, be extremely cautious. Blowdowns might shift, branches will smack you in the face, it is very easy to get tripped up and lose your footing, etc. If hiking around a jumbled mess, bear in ...

Clyde Smith Shelter on AT, Carter County, TN 12/16/23
Просмотров 565Месяц назад
Clyde Smith Shelter is a short distance from the Appalachian Trail via a blue blazer. Cherry Gap Shelter is 9.2 miles S and Roan High Knob Shelter is 8.5 miles N. Supposedly, 10 can sleep here but they may have to double up on the platforms. There are several decent tent sites. Indoor eating negates the need for a picnic table. Water source is located downhill via a short blue blazer. There is ...

This is an impressive shelter. But you better plan to sleep inside it because there are only 1 or 2 tent sites. The water source is crossed just before the shelter. There is a privy here.

Not alot of parking where the trail crosses VA43. A larger area is just below the Blue Ridge Parkway. The town of Buchanan is about 5 miles away. A small town with limited services. About 3/4 mile North of the Gap is a decent tent area. Otherwise, the brush is too thick to offer any flat spots until Cove Mountain Shelter. Near the Little Cove Mountain Trail intersection there is a spot for one ...

Cove Mountain Shelter is about 3 miles North of Bearwallow Gap near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Where the trail crosses VA43 there is enough parking for about 2 cars, parallel to the road. Closer to the Gap at the BRP is a larger parking area. The town of Buchanan is about 5 miles away via VA43. Get water at the creek at the Gap. The hike from Bearwallow Gap is not difficult but there aren't many s...

Bobblets Gap Shelter is an Appalachian Trail shelter located just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in VA. The town of Buchanan is not far away. A parking area is on the Parkway which makes access very easy. The shelter is approximately 749 miles from Springer Mountain, GA and .2 mile downhill from the AT via several switchbacks. The shelter sleeps 6 but tenting options are very limited. A small te...

Overmountain Shelter was in danger of collapsing and was closed for several years. The decision was made to tear it down. It took us (TEHCC, Pisgah and Cherokee USFS) 4 days to tear it down and then at least one day to remove the remaining materials. This is the Day One video (1 of 3) of the deconstruction process. It was sad to see this Hikers Icon being torn down but structurally it was badly...

2023 was a great year for Hiking with Tools!. This is just a short video recap of our adventures on the Appalachian Trail. Hiking with Tools! is an opportunity with the TN Hiking and Canoeing Club (TEHCC.org) to do some light trail maintenance. We typically go out on the 2nd Second Saturday of the month. If weather cooperates, we'll meet from March - November. See you on the trail!

The Barn aka Overmountain Shelter was in danger of falling. It was determined not to be safe as a shelter and would therefore be torn down. During deconstruction week and after removing many of the boards it was finally pulled down on the 15th of November, 2023. A sad day for many hikers. During the destruction process, I noticed many hiker graffiti displayed and took pictures of them. I'm not ...

The AT got hammered ... Very Sad.
We've been hit hard by other events, but nothing this devastating.
any idea if chainsaws would be allowed on the trail, or they still adhering to that 'no motorized vehicle/tool' rule? I'm in NE TN and would love to help clear the path.
Right now only USFS personnel are using chainsaws. TEHCC does have sawyers but we have not gone out yet. Perhaps once the assessments are done. The 'no motorized vehicles' rule only applies to Wilderness Areas. I hope USFS personnel have a waiver for this event. If you'd like to be added to our list of volunteers, please send an email to atvolunteer@tehcc.org. Check out tehcc.org/volunteer for more info. Thanks!
I remember there being a cat there
Lots of really good memories in that old barn. Barn might be gone but still have those memories!
Indeed. And so many others have similar memories.
Where do you all poop?
Privies are essentially outhouses. When privies aren't available responsible hikers dig catholes 6-8 inches deep and bury their waste.
@@mountainsquid04 What do you wipe you butt with?
@@matthowarth4498 Toilet paper. I carry some in a quart size zip bag.
@@mountainsquid04 What do you do with the dirty paper?
@@matthowarth4498 Either in the privy or properly dug cathole.
Cool Shelter. Don't look good for tenting.
Yeah, I like to tent when possible. In 2004, I did stay here and someone brought some trail magic down from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Burgers and dogs!
Worked with Doug my first time volunteering with Konnarock trail crew at Grayson Highlands
Glad I got to camp there.. Good memories..
Kinda sad watching the old barn fall.. But it had to be done.
I sure miss that old barn...
I camped there a few times but always tented.
Great video, Tim. This shows folks that trail maintenance can be within anyone's capabilities, and that it is an ongoing process throughout the year. Well done! 🙂
Thanks! There are all kinds of opportunities for trail maintenance and usually there are no special abilities required. All Volunteers are welcome!
Good to see young volunteers on the trail.. Cool !
Indeed! Never to young to Volunteer!
Hi there Mountain Squid! I'm not sure how to contact you - hoping you see this message! Would you mind if I use a snippet of your video in a video on my channel? I'm working on a long update video and I'd like to mention the Overmountain Shelter was torn down and show a visual. This is the best footage I've seen of the shelter being torn down, and I'm so appreciative you shot this footage and also uploaded it. I would give you an onscreen credit and could also link your channel in my description. Thanks so much in advance, and thank you for all the work you do for the trail in the Roan Highlands area.
Hi Kara. Yes, you can use a clip from my video. Of course, you realize we didn't really manually pull it down. Trucks were involved in the actual pull down. I do have more videos of the dismantling; I just haven't uploaded yet. Please do give me credit and link to the original if you can. Thanks!
@@mountainsquid04Thank you so much - and will do!
Beautiful !!! You sure do get around !! Happy New Year.
Thanks! I usually take at least one road trip during the year. Happy New Year!
Walter was the first Zion superintendent.
Is it still closed to campers? Even AT campers?
Camping around Watauga Lake on the AT is still closed. The former shelter site does not have any decent tent sites anyway.
Too many bears? Is that because it is close to the lake and alot of day users are leaving food around?
Yes, bears were a problem. It might have been dayhikers, backpackers, or even fishermen.
I just walked out to it today and there is nothing left except the cement foundation. :(
Nice hike. I've done it many times including the day we tore it down and then burned the wood. ruclips.net/video/CQNGdh1p6Yc/видео.htmlsi=Ghjj4dd4EgJmklto
Awesome work, Tim! Thanks to you and the boys for jobs well done...🙂
Thanks and You're Welcome! The last one, that missed the truck, has been making its way up to Roan High Knob for use on the shelter.
That was a bad storm, Awesome Job clearing it.
Thank-You. It was bad and worse down at the Dennis Cove CG. It was a very busy week for the Forest Service. Supposedly it was a tornado.
Sad to see it torn down, I always liked that shelter.
Sad indeed. Many hikers will miss it.
Not sure what condition the boards were in but I'm concerned that you might have missed an opportunity for salvage
Salvage and a couple grand depending on what kind of wood it was
Many of the red boards have been salvaged. I have several ideas on how to use them. I'm going to give some to the new Damascus Trail Center for use or display. One idea is to build several models of The Barn using the pieces. Then display at the DTC and maybe Harpers Ferry.
I've rebuilt those old barns, preserve history if there not in too bad of shape.
It was in bad shape and in danger of falling over. In the historical context, The Barn was not historical and didn't even meet the 50 year threshold. Having been there during the demo, I can testify that it would have been very difficult to rebuild. Probably not impossible but difficult. Many of the boards had to be cut because the nails were embedded so tightly they did not budge.
Poor old barn
Indeed!
Sad but satisfying to witness. Hope you build a new one with ease in time 👍
Indeed sad. We've identified an area for a new shelter but that is as far as the planning has gone. The site is favorable but only time will tell.
Beautiful, just beautiful. Spring is my favorite time in the Appalachians. The virgin green, migrating birds coming in with their songs, the trees yet with their leaves so that one has views. You captured this time of year perfectly.
Beautiful work.
Thanks. That was a fun project.
Very interesting, Tim. Is this potential new shelter site designed as a replacement for Overmountain? Or to spread out the overuse of that campsite? Or, perhaps both... I suppose...😉
Yes, no, maybe ... At this point in time we don't know. We're just trying to stay ahead of the game. There is a committee discussing the conditions of the trail between Carvers Gap and US19E and this is part of it.
@@mountainsquid04 Thanks for clarifying this! 🙂
Whats your camera setup at the beginning of the video?
Cool video, I will go hike there sometime, Thanks
Thanks for sharing!
Yes...he's buried under the concrete the other side of the chimney your standing at
I'm at the table in this video! Going through my journals and remembered you walking up recording this, and after a little searching I'm very happy to have stumbled across this video! This was my first night ever on the AT, and I'm happy to report that I (trail name; STRINGS) made it all the way to Katahdin on Oct 12th! Hope all is well Mountain Squid!! Thanks for doing what you do
Awesome! Congratulations on your hike, STRINGS!
That first rotting tree at Roan High Knob with the offset branch, looked to be a difficult customer to fell in the optimum direction. That it did not land on the cabin, when leaning that way, shows the skill of the sawyer. Lots of new firewood now both there, and at No Business Knob...
These guys are really good! That first one cracked and fell before it was cut all the way through.
Dang that’s some damage
Yes it was, fortunately it is wide enough that we could separate the trail from the ATVers. Hopefully, we fixed the water problem.
The way he hops is so cute ☺️
What a fantastic effort to try and solve a long-standing problem. Many thanks to all for this. Has there been brainstorming as to what could be a permanent fix to the erosion problem?
Thanks and You're Welcome. There is a committee trying to solve the problem. The foot traffic volume is too great. Right now we've investigating possibly relocating the AT around Round Bald with a Spur trail leading to the top. My fall back has been a monorail although a zipline might be kinda fun too!
You guys know what you're doing! Many thanks for your hard work...🥰
Thank-You and You're Welcome. There are many years of experience in the club!
Awesome Job, Thanks for all you guys do !
Thanks and You're Welcome! I was glad we didn't have to haul the logs too far!
Thank you for your efforts, guys!!
You're Welcome. This was a fun project!
God’s country!!
I've had some great s**ts there hahaha!
They are planning on tearing it down in the next few months, very sad to see it go :(
Cool place to hike,
Yep, We still have March to go !
Excellent quality video! Thank you for sharing, cheers!
Thank You and you're welcome!
That is a great section to hike,
I like it as well. And now it is even better.
Look's like you have been hiking a lot lately, I love hiking that area.
Dayhikes have been about the same. I just threw in a couple nights, overnighter, which went by several shelters.
Have you seen this video? ruclips.net/video/yMHEZnoHnPY/видео.html
