helpful stuff. thank you.
Good explanation! I am 64 and learning how to surf. It sure isn't easy. I first had to learn about the ocean since I hadn't been swimming since I was 16. I've been doing this for the better part of a year and some days I catch a handful of waves and other days none. I stood a few times but my primary goal is to read and catch more waves. Also, I am learning at an open beach break in Florida-not an easy place to learn. I am lucky in that I have my husband who surfs to teach me. You say basically the same things he does so I am confident I am on the right track. Thanks for these.
What an amazing video dude
Great info thanks! This is the size wave im currently trying to catch and ive been unsure when to actuallg stand up. Wasnt sure if i need to wait till im planing down the face or not. Been catching a few but my board is still flat near the top and im like "ummm should i be standing up yet because my board is flat and my nose is sticking way out.." but now it makes sense! Once im sure the wave has me, stand up near the top whilst my board is flat then put my weight forward to plane down the face.
love your videos man
Way too much talking imo. Needs video examples or graphic examples. Good info though
😊😊😊ol
Very very well explained, thank you. If only I could have found a tutorial like this years ago...
Good stuff thank you
Perfect timing. Also “first”
That was really nice of you explaining those things. Thank you😊
This was awesome, man.
Yes!
Hey I am surfing in sri lanka and thanks for your valuabel informations.

@@xlfrostyy6274 stoked to hear it! Goodlcuk
Where do I send video of my popup in the living room for assessment?
Hey, please email jordy@independentsurfer.com
Thanks - good tips!
Why are you wearning the mic on the peak of you hat? This makes you look a little stupid, and was distracting.
7:20 and the pop up timing info was exactly what I needed to hear and why I am catching 2/5 6-8fts - thanks! I couldn’t figure out the timing for a 4hr session will try this
Jordy what time zone are you in? Looking to book a video review session. Thanks
Hey! I am currently based in California, so PST. Please reach out via email at Jord@independentsurfer.com to schedule the coaching sessions. I look forward to your email.
This is very helpful thanks a lot 🙌🏽
Develop a style, were all different and honing your style is will make the best use of your body and it's abilities. Think of of it like your dancing with the wave... Efficient paddling, position, timing and style 🙂
Excellent Video! Thats me!!
I was given a mid length 7’8” board and went out without knowing much except for watching people surf. I am 56 years old first time and no lessons. I made lots of errors and was exposed to many conditions, some of them way out of what is right for a clueless beginner. One day the waves were 10ft and I was so intimidated and would hyperventilate and I got beat up with bruises. After about 15 times surfing within 2 months, I am beginning to pop up and stand much more. I basically had to teach myself everything and was totally off on things when I think back. On the first day, just lying on the board and paddling was strange and I tried to not fall off as the board pitched in every direction. Now,I am progressing baby steps each time I go out and feel this to be a victory in personal achievement at my age. My son who is 16 rides a short board and he says to me I have definitely improved. I am a technical mountain bike rider and have tried to keep myself fit and perhaps this has helped with surfing, but I see how surfing is SUCH a challenging sport. Much more hardcore than what I had ever thought but it is such a beautiful sport. Love it!
Having played so many different sports and tried so many different things.. surfing is by far one of the hardest things I have ever done.. but so rewarding once you get there
There's nothing intermediate about anything being discussed in this video, not sure why you'd put 'intermediate surf tip' in the title, maybe I'm wrong but an intermediate surfer has already figured out popping up and having a functional stance, and is moving from trimming down the line to doing more drawn out bottom and top turns, I don't know if I'd agree that the surfer in the video is at that stage yet.
In my experience coaching for the last 11 years, these are the most common mistakes intermediate surfers are making.. I think it’s fair to say that if you are surfing a short board like he is, speed generating down the line and doing turns then you are at the intermediate stage. You’d be surprised at how many surfers are making mistakes with both the take off and the pop up at an intermediate level and that’s having an adverse effect on their performance on the wave.. Intermediate is a spectrum and I think it would be totally unfair to call this guy a beginner.. Sorry that this video doesn’t appeal to you but if you are looking for surf tips to help you get better at surfing I would seriously consider assessing the basics if you feel like you aren’t making progress, it’s usually what holds people back
The info starting at 7:20 is pure gold!! The tipping point. This is where I struggle. Now I’m going to pay more attention. I always had thought reverse was true but can clearly see the difference now. Thank you!!
Very useful, thank you
Advanced beginner, here. Good stuff. Thanks for taking the time!
Blah blah blah
Thanks for the engagement, helps this video reach more people
@@independentsurfer always idiots out there. Great video. Thanks!
Thanks for the acknowledgement and glad you liked the video
I’m so excited for your upcoming surf and yoga retreat in Nicaragua! 😊
I learnt to surf my local beach break thats super critical, extremely inconsistent and fast breaking. Point breaks/soft breaking waves look insanely easy and absolutely heavenly to surf. I reckon it has helped me get to early intermediate quicker and i notice i tend to read waves with more success than others who are visiting.
queen!!!
Great stuff man!!!
Straighten your back a bit more and ride up the wave
Hell at Jbay u can ride 1 wave for 1 solid minute on a good day!
I’m very much a beginner at the moment; just learning to read the waves properly. Even so, this video dissecting a far more advanced surfer will help so much
I think I should resign myself to mini mals.
Good video
#1-10 Practice in shite surf.

Any tips on how to maintain the high line while taking off besides looking down the line?
Good question, getting in early always helps. The later you get in to a wave, the harder it is to get that 1st bottom turn in. Angling take off also helps a lot, if the wave is a little steeper and you are taking off a little late. Having a good pop up can’t hurt, and rotating your shoulders out to sea as soon as you stand up will help as well. But, most important is to get in and get up early
@@independentsurfer thanks!
Really great video braking thing down in such great detail. Sounds like when turning its mostly with your back foot. That being said are surf skates not a good tool for training since your using your front foot to make most of the movement? Thoughts?
Good question, my thought on this is that the boards turning function is driven from the back of the board and if you don't have your foot directly over the fins, it's hard to turn. However, there are times that you'd want the back foot further forward like when you are speed generating or getting barreled, and then placed further back for turns. I think a lot of control over the board comes from both the front foot the back and hard to tell which is the real driver. But, I think it's most important to think about the upper body movement involved. My surfing really changed when I paid more attention to upper body movements
magnificent
That’s crazy because i was struggling for few weeks, focusing on my take off, trying to make it proper but i couldn’t see any progress until I realized that I was watching my board, so i started watch the line and it really changed everything, the pop up was more natural, my position on my board was way better i dont know how that magic trick works but it works
It's such a game changer!
You tried leaning your shoulders into the whip of the turn. Yes that's good, but transfer that energy through your shoulders to your hips and it'll look much better and not as forced
This was so helpful! She is also so good!
