Microsquirt Cappuccino Part 5
For the fifth part of wiring in the Microsquirt to our Suzuki Cappuccino we wire in the AEM Wideband o2 Sensor so we can start tuning. Then we calibrate the MAP sensor so the load tables can make a bit more sense. Then we finish up by installing the 4 Port Mac Valve electronic boost controller leaving us with a car ready to tune and drive!
This is part of the series where we will go from a freshly imported Suzuki Cappuccino running the factory 11psi and 60hp to the tire and take it to the limit of the factory turbo with 17psi and a monstrous 80whp :p
I do want to apologize because these videos will be boring to some because of how technical they are, I wish I could make wiring and tuning a ...

    I have owned over 20 Fiero in my life and used to be part of and do custom work for the Fiero owners club of Michigan. I made a custom Fire lift to lift the body of the car off the ground while leaving the rear sub frame on a caster pallet. The lift was a 3 piece design. Two 4x4x8 by 3/16 wall metal tube for the sides. One piece of 2x6x8 by 3/16 wall tube for the top. The top has two 3x3x6" metal tables welded under each end to slide into the 4x4x8 tubes which become the sides or legs. The bottom of the 4x4x8 legs has a piece of 4x4x5 angle iron centered and welded to them. From the ends of the 4x4 angle iron I welded 2x2x4 metal tube back to the 4x4 legs making a triangle support structure. In the center of the top, the 2x6x8, I carver a notch in the side just big enough to let the loop of a 20k lb tow hook go inside the tube and lock once you pull down on it and welded it in at that point. I then hooked a 5,500 lb manual chain fall to the hook. This setup goes over the back of the Fiero and you simply life the entire rear of the car off the subframe, which is sitting on the castered plallet. Unlike a 4 post hoist, I can use this anywhere because it easily comes apart a for transportation. This lift frame is also handy for taking engines out of boats and boats off trailers. Build it, you be glad you did.

    I've been just stumped with which GM engine would make a good, manual transmission Fiero. I finally gave up on the idea of using a GM engine. They make good engines, but not what I had envisioned. I thought about an Alfa V6 out of a front wheel drive 164, but finding one will be a challenge. And then there is the VR6. Excellent engine mated to an excellent gearbox. Great choice for swap. That narrow angle really helps with the fit. Of course, that intake....has a new set of challenges, especially with a fancy plastic manifold. Good job. This car looks well sorted.

    • @schwamotorsports7792
      @schwamotorsports7792 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, yeah and if you went with the simpler 12 valve motor the intake manifold actually fits since the head is a fair bit skinnier. I have I have no regrets with the 24 valve, but I would recommend others go the easier route :p Alfa would be cool too, but finding them in the states really would be tricky!

    Shame not enough room for a second turbo of the same type. Not a criticism, but I'd have left the quiet turbo alone. As for the intake manifold if it worked, but it's your car. Absolutely love the colour, what is it? Would a standard VR6 swap (as though there is such a thing) without the heavily modified intake and turbo have required any cutting into the boot/trunk? Would an even smaller turbo but two of them fit in? Would 3 even smaller turbos work or even be feasible?

    • @schwamotorsports7792

      So lots to unpack here :) the color is Lotus Elise Laser Blue, and I love it too :) I would love to go twin or even triple turbo, I have a way to do it in my head with it being twin with a third to come in at higher loads, but not in the fiero :p A smaller turbo would definitely remove the need for cutting the trunk, and I am questioning going smaller for a little more response and torque down low, we will see what happens and I’ll keep everybody updated :)

      Oh, in Microsquirt you will want to lock the timing, its part of the ignition settings page. Step 7 is to check the timing with light and check that it is within spec. That spec coming after step 7 in the manual specifically states "Initial ignition timing (Test switch terminal grounded): 5+/- 1 degree at BTDC (at idle speed)" the Kei Sport pnp instructions on their website say "Ensure that base timing is 5 degrees Jumper pins D and E on the diagnostics connector." I guess the short answer is kinda :p I got it working well enough to drive it a few hundred miles but I kept having intake backfires. I removed the manifold and sold that fiero. I now have a Brunton Stalker I am putting a 3900 in and using this intake and I found a seam that wasn’t welded on the intake, so it’s getting a second chance at life and should work much better this time :)

    Beautiful build and history presentation. Colleague of mine has a 3800 fiero except it's a turbo 3800. It's on RUclips. Stock bottom end and it dynod just Uber 700hp to the wheels. Damn impressive. Kick the boost up and show us some numbers bro.

      That’s awesome, I know the vr6 can get up there power wise as well, but if I was going to push that I would want to get me some stronger axles, and drop the compression a bit. All I’m hoping for is around 400whp with 15 pounds of boost and I’ll have it on the dyno at the 40th anniversary fiero show coming up July 2023 :)

    You have a good feel for that stick shift. Smooth with good rev-matching on the upshifts. It would have been great if you would have just run it Wide Open through three gears once and get the clutch out a little quicker. Where's the boost gauge? That seems like a pretty widely spaced transmission for a 6-speed but I guess it's hard to tell unless I can see both the tack and the speedometer. Some guys that weren't raised on stick shifts never get a feel for it. With that good rev matching I'll bet one of the things that you don't wear out quick is the clutch.

      If you’re up for a northstar swap a vr6 swap isn’t too crazy out of your capacity. Coming up with good working shift cables is a bit of a pain, but still very achievable and once done simplifies most of the other unique parts into being “just an engine swap” shoot me an email, schwamotorsports@icloud.com, and I would be happy to talk over any details I didn’t cover in the video :)

    I love unusual swaps in FIero's. I've seen a couple K20 swaps too. Would love to see a 2ZZ swap

    • @schwamotorsports7792
      @schwamotorsports7792 Год назад

      Having had a turbo 2zz in my Elise, it’s just not enough torque for the weight of a fiero, there are ways to get high rpm motors into Fieros, but the 2zz I fear is just lacking(without a ton of internals work to support good power). Then again, maybe the supercharged set up would be nice, but at 1000lbs heavier than an Elise it’s gonna be a tall order with that little of motor :(

    you think i should turbo my 04 forester xs or just get the 2.5 turbo motor?

    • @schwamotorsports7792
      @schwamotorsports7792 2 года назад

      So it depends on if you are willing to do the tuning yourself or not. If you can't tune, or don't have a tuner but you are really good with a wrench, I would swap the wiring harnesses and ecu and drivetrain from an XT over to the XS, otherwise there are just some frustrating hurtles with the XS when it comes to tuning.

    • @HypedOUT
      @HypedOUT 2 года назад

      @@schwamotorsports7792 I heard you don't have to swap the wiring harness only have to add a jumper guess that's not true on the 2.5turbo motor swap

    • @schwamotorsports7792
      @schwamotorsports7792 2 года назад

      @@HypedOUT maybe it has to do with which 2.5 you use, the XT motor has variable intake cams and I don’t know if that can be integrated into the harness, but the XT motors also have the wiring disconnects in a slightly different location than the XS cars but I’m not quite sure how much that effects things :p
