Thank You !
@benpowersguitar is the body of the guitar the same thickness as a standard squier strat(thin body) or is it thicker like a fender strat?
They are thicker like a Fender. It may off by a mm or 2, but it's very close if not exact. At least comparing it to a Vintera II that is sitting next to it.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Are the fret board edges rolled (i.e. rounded)? I'm looking at this one and the Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH HT E (Ebony Fingerboard) that is in the same price range as the Dinky DKA. The Charvel has rolled fret board edges however, the Dinky DKA has stainless steel frets but the Charvel doesn't.
It doesn't. Also, I have the Charvel as well. The neck is slimmer and overall faster. The Charvel is a nice guitar. So is the Jackson. Very different guitars to me.
@@benpowersguitar Thanks for your prompt reply (and to an older video). It looks like the features I'm looking for resides in the higher end Jackson American Series Soloist SL2 HT, Ebony. Thanks again!
@@AlanSmitheeman You're welcome. Be aware the X series Soloist necks are a little thicker and gloss, except the matte black. IDK know about the US ones, but might want to verify. I personally disliked it so much, I sold it the same week I bought it. I still have the others we talked about. Though, the US may be great. Would have to play it. Looks great and specs great. I would love to know what you think if you get one.
@@benpowersguitar The matte black would be the only one of interest to me. I am also looking at an acoustic Emerald carbon fibre 12 string guitar so with the hefty price tags on that and the aforementioned Jackson, it will be a long time to save up for each. In the meantime, I will windowshop on your channel!
@@AlanSmitheeman I have yet to try a carbon fiber acoustic. Bet the 12 string sounds great.
How do you know when to stop? Are there markings on the reamer that show diameter or do you just do a little and check if the bushing fits? Thanks
I started by doing 2 full rotations, then checking. Once I had the fit, I marked it with tape, so I could just turn until I hit the tape and have a perfect fit. So the first one takes a couple minutes, then it's quick.
@@benpowersguitar nice! Thanks for the tip
Sounds great Ben. Is it my imagination or are these lower output pickups? I'm on the fence about that fade. I think I'd like it more if it had a black or tortoiseshell pickguard and a rosewood fretboard. I'm not sure about that transition to the neck, it looks a little like they were trying to match it to the maple but didn't quite get it right.
I have been trying to decide if they are lower output as well, without getting out my meter. Sometimes they seem that way, sometimes the opposite. I will be pulling out the multimeter as well as trying them against other pups, including other noiseless. I honestly figured you would hate the look of this one:)
@@benpowersguitar Yeah, I can't decide if I like it or not. As it stands I don't, but as I said if it had a dark pickguard and rosewood fretboard it might look good. It is that yellow to maple transition that doesn't do it for me.
@@ccjmusic I will say the title card pic looks more accurate. Kind of washed out in my vid. It is more of a mustard yellow.
@@benpowersguitar I can't see that well enough as it is too small and doesn't show when I open the video as it just plays the video. I'm guess though that the neck color will also have changed.
@@ccjmusic I am not sure, but the neck does almost look to have a little extra yellow in the tint, but I keep going back and forth on it.
I have that same exact Kramer. It is kickass
Short answer? No the 550 isn’t worth double the price.
Man that strat is beautiful! The world needs more strats!
Thanks man. Yeah, I really wanted this color for a while. So good in person.
how does the neck compare to the ibanez gio? i love how mine feels but i also want a new guitar
These have the Wizard 3, which is much nicer than anything in the Gio line, to me. Slim, smooth, just great neck.
Awesome man.
I use to love my Purple CV Strat ….a lot but my new Affinity actually plays better and sets up better it isn’t temperamental like the CV. The Affinity just plays better when setup right but the fatter neck and big headstock isn’t my favorite thing. I did upgrade the pickups to high output single coils which made a world of difference. I just love high output.
High output can be so much fun.
I’m having trouble to keep the running when I use the whammy bar
Make sure the trem is set level, the strings are properly stretched. I tune up, stretch the strings 3-4 times, tune up again, stretch again, then tune again. Then lock the nut. In my experience, an unlevel trem tends to make the B or G go out of tune easily. Also, make the locking screws on the back of the trem are tight. Sometimes they come loose in shipping, which allows a string to keep slipping.
Man that’s a gorgeous Strat! Great review Ben! Will never tire of strats
Thanks man. I hope you're having a good one.
Classic Vibe
Made in North America! Happy Holidays!
🍻
Made in Canada?
@@oneanother1 No, Ensenada, Mexico.
I have them all too. I personally like the sonic best, then CV, debut, and finally affinity. I’ve had the most issues with affinities. Just imo.
Personally I am going to take a CV every time. Though I keep hanging on to the Sonic, that was meant for 2 videos and should have been gone months ago. The more I play it, the more I like it. I can see why it's popular. All of these are 2024 models, except the CV from 2023. They have been good, but I did have issues out my Affinities from roughly 8 years ago. Ended up with a Bullet instead.
She's a beauty! I dig that guitar. I saw your vid on the Firefly EVH Relic with Bent Head-Stock... and I had to have it. I subbed you, and immediately proceeded to grabbing one. I got it maybe 3 weeks ago. INCREDIBLE! I had already been looking at them, but your vid inspired me to pull the trig. Man what a guitar! I like this one too. Sweet riffage too. Rock on!
Thank you, I really appreciate it. Glad you love your FF EVH Relic. They really are cool if you're an EVH fan.
How do these sound honestly and feel compared to fat 50s? And player series ? Do you truly notice a 200 USD difference ? Honestly curious
I know I keep asking. Hahah. It's in my head that need gilmours set due to marketing and admiration and has a lot of GAS backing it. I need to try to resist but I am truly curious. If I spent that much and after the thrill is gone and the money I'd question it and then try to see if it was worth it. If it is big noticeable difference and I was legit loving it. I'd then be on the private builder for less or build my own or wind my own. Hahahah. Hope you been well bro. I've been so busy. I'll be back soon. Still waiting on cabin interior materials and the electric has been just ran to the place. Patience. Lol
These are more gritty, mid focused to me. Fat '50s have a bit more chime and TS have a bit more bite, to my ears. I don't use either as my main pickups though.
When it comes to Gilmour, he has used many different pickup sets and combos over the years. More than any one I can think of. You might want to research a favorite era (I would go off live concerts from YT) and go for that. Sounds like you still have a LOT going on man.
Love that jam solo opening. You got the blues brother. ❤
Thanks Robert. I have always liked the sound of a strat with decent distortion.
Sweet jam. Great video man!!!
Thanks. Cheapies can lots of fun.
Awesome reviews man
Thanks man. I hope things are smoothing out for you.
Looks and sounds great Ben! I'd prefer it without the gloss neck and headstock, but other than that I like it.
Thanks Colin. I am really surprised it's as close to my AVII '61 as it is. I can't wait to put them head to head. I may keep this one instead. Especially with it being half the price. Have to do some serious playing with them both this week.
@@benpowersguitar that will be a good comparison video Ben. I wonder which you will decide to keep.
Yeahhhh, fantastic guitar, sounds great, nice share!
Thanks buddy, I greatly appreciate it.
I have the Squire tele in 2 models. I went with an Affinity model first $229 and then I went with a like new barely used Squire Carbonita, new $499, that I paid $279 for. The Carbonita is better, I am modifying the Affinity with a new pre-wired control panel with a push pull and an Alnico 5 dual rail bridge pickup. The Affinity had issues with fret buzz out of the box. For a Strat there are better options. Try a Tease guitar if you want a $100 to $200 guitar that plays great out of the box and is set up before shipping with owner direct customer service. You get his cell # that goes directly to him or one of his top people if he's not available
I bought a sonic because it was on sale and what the heck, it's on sale. If it gets scratches or the dog knocks it over then I'm somewhat OK with it. What I love about it is the neck and playability, it's the one out of all my guitars that I reach for when I get a idea for a riff. I agree the infinity is the better choice but I do enjoy my sonic. Thanks for the video.
How does that bridge work? Smooth? Shame that it’s not floating/ recessed like some charvel 2-point trems. Seems that some locking tuners and pu upgrade would be in place. Maybe nut too. I’ve seen those go about 120-150€ here in europe, used ofc. Might try one, just for fun
You're not going to be dive bombing with it, but it works ok. These really are surprisingly good guitars for their price.
@ yep, not a trem that could take abuse, but would be fun to do some flutters, and more light stuff. My japan hybrid fender with 2pointer stays in tune just fine, and I would asume that so would the jackson, if equipped with locking tuners and proper nut. This new js series is totally a fine example of a good price/quality deal!
@KeijoHuovinen That's a good way to sum it up.
Ah what a shame they didn't add the other nob for the neck pickup. Is it middle and neck you control with the 1 tone nob? Yeah what ever 1s it is I don't like that. Cause you can isolate the pickups and each has it's own sound.
Yeah, I usually wire mine neck/bridge on 1 and mid on 2. It's something that I don't understand why it's not standard wiring.
@@benpowersguitar Yeah but again I'd rather a 4 nobbed strat because again you can isolate all 3 so if you change the bridge or neck setting I think it's really the middle 1 that doesn't have it's own right? So you've now changed it's tone forpositions 4 and 2. Meh maybe it's just a Hamiht thing but I'm real real nitpicky about audio and audio details. What's a roled fret board? I don't really think they changed much to make a real diffrence but the things you mentioned which as I'm blind I guess i'd have to touch the player 2 to really feel if it's a worth difference. You did skip mentioning 1 of them has a humbucker in it now. That may matter sound wize. Again I'd have to hear it too.
I just purchased single humbucker squire sonic Strat . $139 cyber Monday This is the second guitar I’ve purchased in my life. The first was in 1997 . 97 Korean made squire Stratocaster I still have it. It’s a solid body heavy guitar, I just had back surgery so I purchased a lighter guitar.
Great deal! Wow, injury is how I got in to the light strats with a Bullet back around 2016. I hope it helps you like it did me.
I've put it on a Squier body, bought for less than £20 in England. More resonance and glad that thin piece of junk is gone .
I know it doesn't make a difference overall, but do they differ as far as having the skunk stripe neck? I notice that most in the rack don't. Personally I don't like the gloss neck with the tint, or the bigger headstock, I do like the matte finish, so I think I would go with the Debut. As far as a beginner goes, I think it will all depend on one thing, what makes them want to play guitar. If it is because they want to try and be a version of a hero of theirs, then whichever guitar most looks like their hero's guitar will win, so that rules out the Debut in most cases. If they want to play guitar to start a band, then I think they would go for the guitar they have the money for after they get an amp and pedals etc.
You're right, only the Affinity has the stripe. Didn't even think about it. I thought you might like the Debut. The hero thing often comes in to play, even for me at times. Which once in a while has bit me, as I ended up not liking the guitar once I played it. Hate it when that happens:)
@@benpowersguitar I have often thought about buying a guitar based on a hero, but so far that hasn't happened. But that is mostly due to availability rather than anything else. The guitars I would want would be a Les Paul custom with a black body, but an unfinished natural maple top. and a white SG with 3 pickups and a Bigsby. Your challenge now is to figure out who those guitars belonged to. 😝
@@ccjmusic Dang it, I have seen the white SG in videos. I know Frampton had Black Beauty, but I don't remember him having the SG when I saw him. I won't cheat and use Google. Other than Frampton, IDK☹ I though Iommi, but can't remember anything but the Monkey SG in his hands. Most anything I have had that is a hero guitar, was a knock off or a similar model but different color...but I do have a couple artist models. The Clapton "Blackie" strat and Nita Strauss JivaJr, with her Pandemonium/True Velvet set. Though I had played them before hand, and liked the way they sounded. Plus I love the boost in the EC strat. I like trying to duplicate a guitar I like, then tweak if I want. Like my purple strat is basically another AVII '61, but without the gloss/tint on the neck, I added treble bleed and 2x TBX tone controls & a Tusq nut instead of bone. What I consider a modern vintage.
Always enjoy to support. :-) Happy pre x-mas days for you and your beloved ones!
Thank you. I hope you guys are having a great week.
I have the lefty version of this and I love it. The only color option for a left handed model is black, but it looks and sound killer. My only complaint was that I could hear the springs resonating when I was recording. I put a thin sheet of foam under the springs and problem solved.
I got the same guitar ,after a little set up it plays great for the price
Yeah, knowing a little setup can do a lot for an inexpensive guitar.
The classic vibe also uses different body wood types right, some are harder and thicker. The affinity and below uses only poplar wood and are slight thinner right? The more gloss on everything is going to look better over time, possibly hold more resale value. I used classic vibe is a nice way to go, and you don't really need to mod it out to make it sound better. What about firefly? They have a lot of great options for the price. Might be better than all of the squiers...combined.
Some CV's use poplar, some naytoh and some others now and then. The CV's are a little thicker, though there are exceptions here and there. Some people really don't like a finished neck, as well as want a 2 point trem and/or a HB for the bridge. While I love the CV, it isn't for everyone. As for Firefly, the 4 I have had were heavy and necks on 2 were a bit thick. The trems/bridges on many are garbage. All but the relic have had cosmetic issues. They have some nice features, but way too inconsistent and not something I would recommend to a beginner.
@@benpowersguitar thank you for the reply. I went with a used classic vibe cause they have it in lefty. Haven't had any firefly's, they seem popular. I really like squier brand, I have some older ones too. I got a Korean laminated plywood one made in Korea!
@@oneanother1 Wow, I remember the laminated ones. I got one years ago as part of a trade. I couldn't hardly give the body away at the time.
Excellent rundown and recommendations on brand new Squier / Fender guitars. Happy Holidays to all!
Thanks buddy. Happy Holidays.
Good review. I think you got it right. The Affinity is the best value. The Classic Vibe is the best looking and sounding. I’m sure Fender knows it and that is why they price it a lot higher.
73 mids bridge n more db
I am doing my epiphone sg , installing klusen revolution series , have to enlarge , how do you check to know your diameter is exactly right ? A tiny bit too much , won't the new bushings not stay put ? It seems like you have to be pretty exact , but maybe not
Actually, you have room for error. I kept count of the turns on the 1st one which I did like 2 turns at time, so I knew pretty much when to stop for the rest.
DAYUM!😎
I wonder if Fender uses different sources for the necks, some reviewers say they are bigger than the Affinity others say thinner. I’m in if they are thinner.
I have it and 2 Affinity strats here, mine is thinner. I hate to say it, but since it's Amazon, you can return it if you don't like it.
I have the Berhinger and I notice it doesn't get loud, I don't have a TS9 so i can't compare it. Did you notice that?
My Behringer gets pretty loud, but the TS9 gets louder for sure. Also think the TS9 has a little more bite.
love the video I ordered the relicked VH fire fly full size,, sounds like the real van halen guitar
you have good skills you play really well but the guitar in my opinion sounds horrible no matter what you do to it.. it might sound OK, for soloing . anything else it's really bad... in my opinion. it really does need better pickups... they are really bad.. even for a newbie they gonna hate that sound..
you are baddest than that moron!
Do you on one or have you played one? In reality guitars don’t produce much Sound it is the entire signal chain.
@@bluwngI've viewed a lot of reviews. I'm buying one, but even comparing them to other cheap guitars the Debut seems to sound very muddy anytime someone tries to strum a chord instead of single notes. It's not the end of the world, at this price point it's probably better that you're getting good "bones" instead of high end pickups, it's enough to get you playing, and changing the internals later if you don't like them shouldn't be a huge issue, the only problem seems to be that the body is a little thinner so you have to take that into account, but slightly non standard body shapes are something you're almost certainly going to have to deal with on other brand guitars at this price too.
@@pptemplar5840 I learned something the hard way…it is easy to change tone with EQ and drive. We have been fooled to spend tons on new expensive pickups. Even if you buy an expensive pickup it only has one character and is an expensive one trick pony. Ideally you want a flat response and use EQ to mold and tone you want this was the idea with the first active pickups. EMG had to change based on people’s stubbornness and ignorance they didn’t see the potential in the pickup all they heard was the flat response which sounds awful, they didn’t want to mold tone they wanted the one trick pony and some cotton candy.
Seems like an excellent value guitar.
Yesssss, excellent improv, you got the Blues man!
Thanks man. It's a fun guitar.
Wonderful review Ben, love squier's, big like friend
Decent guitar there. And it has the right look :)
Thanks buddy. Amazing how good cheap guitars are nowadays.
I haven't been checking things guitar-wise for a while now. Have these replaced the Bullet line? I love the matte finish on this. It sounds good to me for sure. BTW. I think this is the best video format Ben. Info/Jam/Sound Test. It gives the people who don't watch till the end a chance to hear the guitars in a mix and if they want to hear them on their own they can stay till the end.
I think the Sonic line is the eventual replacement for the Bullets. Though right now, you can still find Bullets for sale at major stores in limited quantities. I think these are just what they say, an Amazon exclusive. Like the one off colors they do for SW & MF. Which is fine, but I would like to see these available from all Squier retailers. I appreciate the feedback on the video format. I was using the same logic when I put it together. I was going to ask you what you thought of it, so that works out.
@@benpowersguitar yeah I think it is a good format for the future for you. I still really like my Bullet Tele, is there a Tele version of the Sonic and Debut?
@@ccjmusic That's the plan moving forward. Yeah, they are both available. I love my older Bullet strat, with a rosewood fretboard.
@@benpowersguitar Yeah, I love rosewood fretboards too. Glad they are slowly move back to them again.
Fender does a really good job covering the spectrum of price points with their offerings. Cheers!
Yeah, it still surprises me how good the inexpensive guitars are nowadays.
