In eukaryotes, both exonucleases and endonucleases are present and play critical roles in DNA and RNA metabolism.Exonucleases cleave nucleotides one at a time from the ends of a DNA or RNA strand (either 5' to 3' or 3' to 5'), removing terminal nucleotides.Endonucleases cut within the DNA or RNA strand, breaking internal phosphodiester bonds at specific or non-specific sites.These enzymes are involved in various cellular processes such as DNA replication, repair, and RNA processing.
