Online learning is becoming more and more prevalent as the country is in the middle of the Omicron peak - but how can New Zealand make sure this unconventional way of schooling doesn't disrupt children's learning? Switzerland-based international education expert Conrad Hughes told AM we need to dial back on school assessments to overcome this "major challenge". "Don't expect students to be on t...

Creative Question #8 : Where do the big ideas in philosophy come from?
You need technique,you need experience
This brief but pithy lecture is brilliantly relevant, and demolishes the anti-knowledge charlatanism and quackery so pervasive in today's educational circles -- typically promoted by those who themselves have little knowledge at their disposal, and thus make virtue out of necessity.
The question posited by the video soon segues into a "woke" lecture on multi-culturalism. In truth, neither skills nor knowledge are "more important" -- what is vital is understanding how to apply them to produce something beneficial... and, if you want to make money, to make something people will pay for. An ability to solving problems is necessary, but more necessary is the ability to frame the question correctly. Millions of people spend their lives searching for answers to the wrong questions. The rarest skill is the ability to see what is not, a vital skill for those who wish to create the future. Finally, all knowledge is useful; old knowledge is necessary for acquiring new knowledge and remains useful for its original application. For example, I learned WordPerfect 35 years ago, and I still use it everyday because for some applications it remains superior to Word. Knowing how to apply a skill and when and why is the essence of management. Those proficient at a skill will always work for the man who knows how to apply it profitably or usefully.

Fabulous History Conrad - just ordered my copy!
Literacy and Numeracy are generally considered skills, not knowledge. As is language mastery. We also think of practice as pertaining to skills. One doesn't really practice knowing things. One practices doing things.

excellent!
There are some things which are mentioned in this video that i don't agree with. IMO the past is unnecessary information that clutters the mind and creates unnecessary thoughts which causes too many emotions in the body which may lead to several mental illnesses such as depression and PTSD, etc. History is (probably) the most useless subject which can taught but that's just me :P. All the other skills mentioned in the video are important such as cognitive thinking, problem solving, critical thinking, etc.
Skills is more important......but knowledge is the MOST important........Let's say for instance.....Our brain contains knowledge and a natural knowledge......imagine a man who lied down in bed and his brain is dead but his body is alive....there are some cases happened like that..........how can they perform their skills if their brain is dead and that brain contains natural knowledge to know ,to perform and etc. Problem solving is a skill but it needs knowledge to solve it correctly and not mess......Imagine that you are solving ...but how do you know how to solve...it's because of the knowledge you have naturally..........Yes...you can gain knowledge through skills and experience but you can't do that skill without knowledge.......by performing that skill you can gain another knowledge from it..... ..inshort enhancing your skills through knowledge. Being a professional writer is a skill.......how do you know how to write?....who teached you how to write?....... of course your teacher or other who teached you....... writing is a skill and to know how to write we must have knowledge about writing...we must have the knowledge about letters and alphabet......... Knowledge is a theory and skills is an application of what you've learned.........No ones here in earth who are borned that who knows already how to write......it takes teaching and learning(knowledge) and after that practicing it (skills).
Such an excellent talk. Everyone needs to watch this!
Could not agree more. Wisdom and creativity comes from a wide base of knowledge.
Knowledge as individual or knowledge that is dispersed and attained through collaborative effort? Skills aid the acquiring of knowledge and skills cannot be learned without practice and eventually being automatic responses. Being knowledgeable must be mankind's greatest aspiration! You have presented good arguments for the reciprocity of skills and knowledge - one cannot exist without the other. On their own they are useless - knowledge without meaning and application is useless as are skills meaningless without context! Thanks for this Conrad! Very thought provoking...
