Taurus alternator 3.0L DOHC 24V Duratec
The video is obviously not well funded, but shows a neat way to change an otherwise very difficult alternator.

    Hey Bruce hopefully I hear from you how did your car run after that? I was looking at the dealers manual at Kelly Ford and they tell me that I need to use a timing chain lock what is your opinion?

    • @brucethemechanic2738
      @brucethemechanic2738 9 месяцев назад

      Hey Chris, removing the crankshaft balancer does not change the timing at all. The only issue you may run into is holding the crankshaft from rotating. It doesn't hurt the engine if it happens, but becomes a pain in the butt because the balancer bolt is on very tight. Using air or electric is preferable to hand tools because of this. If you are using hand tools, you just need to find a way to hold the balancer from moving while you attempt to loosen the bolt. Good luck and feel free to reach out again if you need to!

    It comes out without any of the extra parts being taken off so just take alternator loose and it will come out the bottom and go right back in not very difficult at all do not take anything else apart

  • @csbennett92
    @csbennett92 2 года назад

    Another tip as well, if you're comfortable doing it a lot of shops recommend dropping the subframe on the right side, passenger side, around 3 to 5 in. This should also give you enough room to get the alternator out of there and you should also not need to remove the harmonic balancer or CV Shaft, though some still recommend removing the harmonic balancer for space. Hoping to make a video of it today.

    • @willsrestorations
      @willsrestorations 2 года назад

      Yes you can drop the subframe about 2 to 3 in not 5 in, 5 in will totally free up the subframe and that's not good for a do-it-yourselfer. You only need 2 in that's it and the thing comes right out if you angle it properly

    • @chrisboroff3546
      @chrisboroff3546 9 месяцев назад

      Hey baby you might know. Ford says you're supposed to use a timing chain lock before taking the alternator off did you have to do that? And did the car run fine after you did the alternator without putting the timing chain?

    • @portermatthew84
      @portermatthew84 4 месяца назад

      @@chrisboroff3546someone is telling you storys. Timing will only be affected if you open this engine. It has nothing to do with any vehicle's alternator. Rather, the relationship between crank, cam, and distributor.

    This method was so very helpful! And just a word of advice for all the other commenters on this video that say this isn't needed, and you can just roll it, please be more specific about which direction or something else helpful, because without more information your comment is useless. The video is more helpful in describing at least one helpful way to get it out. So to Bruce, I give a heartfelt thanks for helping me so much by making this video. We thought about removing the crankshaft pulley, but wasn't sure what that would entail, and definitely didn't know that the pulley would come off of the harmonic balancer, and that it was lefthand threaded, so even if we had tried to get it off, we probably would have broke something. Thank you!

    Bruce, thanks for your video. My daughter's '04 sable has that same 24 OHVC engine and I will use your approach when the alternator fails. Today something failed with the main pulley that is connected to the drive shaft. Motor too hot and too late in the day to do much now. But getting to it with the wheel well guard removed is definitely the way to go. Thanks also for the good manners language-wise. It's for sure a lot of folks on RUclips need to clean up their language.

      Jason Stump If you think the DOHC space is tight, you should try to replace an alternator on the 96-99 Taurus with the V8 engine. You'll add alot of new words to your vocabulary.

    Tried and the crankshaft pulley proved difficult to remove, even with our best pneumatic impact wrench. My brother, in a stroke of brilliance, removed all the fasteners on the passenger side of the subframe and that dropped it enough for us to remove and install the alternator. This was FAR quicker and easier than removing the crank pulley, as the impact took those bolts out in seconds. I do appreciate the crank pulley trick, but it did not go well for us.

    • @brucethemechanic2738

      Joe Weaver There's probably dozens of ways. When I had an Escape(same motor), I ended up unbolting one of the motor mounts to get the extra room. Alot of people have a problem with the "flip and twist" method though, including myself. This is just one more method to add to the madness.

    • @joeweaver9913

      Had I known you would reply so quickly, I would have asked if you knew any trick to replace the power steering high pressure hose. After replacing the alternator, that hose started to leak on the fitting at the p/s pump side. No doubt I was bumping up against that hose with my wrist/forearm while wrenching the fasteners for the alternator. Replacing that hose was far more difficult than the alternator! There are two mounts for it on the firewall and everything you can imagine is in the way. I managed to remove the fastener for one of them using about 18" of 3/8" extensions on my ratchet with an 8mm socket. The other one, I could not remove and ended up cutting the old hose at both ends. The gearbox side fitting was in such a place that with the airbox removed, and sitting there on my knees in the engine bay, I would turn it about 30 to 45 degrees at a time, flip the wrench, and repeat. This is all on my mother's car, not mine...I was very glad to have my older brother's help as he is the better mechanic by far. In total we spent about 6 hours just to do an alternator and a p/s hose. On my Subaru I could have probably done all of that in under an hour because it is easy access to everything.

    • @brucethemechanic2738
      @brucethemechanic2738 7 лет назад

      Joe Weaver I know the hose you're talking about and congrats. My friend had a p/s leak and thought it might be that line. When I looked at it for him, I was horrified and very thankful it was not the leak. I wouldn't have had any suggestions for you. I was a heavy-duty mechanic. All of my light automotive knowledge is incidental to my extremely poor luck, and helping others.

    The alternator WILL come out w/o removing the crank pulley. Remove the battery connector and the alt connector by rolling the alt in the tight space. Then completely roll it over towards the driver side and it will come out. The long bolt on the top rear will not come out until u roll the alt.

    • @brucethemechanic2738

      Bart Blakely For anyone reading, Bart is correct. There are a handful of methods. Removing the crank pulley only gives you more room to operate, but is not entirely necessary.

    • @roberttomas5235
      @roberttomas5235 3 года назад

      Yea but its so much easier n faster to take an impact gun n socket to the crankshaft pulley n remove it in like 10 seconds as opposed to leaving it on destroying anything n everything trying to wrestle w that alternator for a very long time tryin to remove it w it jammed up in between the engine and firewall of the vehicle dude trust me ive done them both ways n let me tell u its ur best bet to take 10 seconds of ur time removing the crankshaft pulley again as opposed to leaving it on n wrestling beating ur fingers knuckles hands n arms up for hours fighting that thing just to remove it

      This alternator on these duratec engines is about as intelligent of a design as 1500$ water pump jobs on 08 n newer sable taurus vehicles what is ford motor co thinking when it comes to designing automobiles this is ignorant design how bout if u want to change quickstruts on some tauruses u have drop the subframe on the car so theres enough clearance to swap out struts i mean ford motor co need to stop hiring idiotic people just because theyre relatives use to work there at one time see theyre great grandpa that worked w henry ford like 100 years ago n his kid had knowledge on fixing n designing automobiles this generation knows about text messaging n playing video games n that is y we have so many dumb designs on vehicles today u should never have to invest that much labor into changing an alternator struts or a water pump 😆

    Hey Bruce, broke college student here trying to buck the trend and do things for himself. Managed to get the old alternator out, having trouble getting new one in. What do you mean by using an impact to get the crankshaft pulley off? It is in my way and I don't want to break anything. Thanks in advance.

    • @brucethemechanic2738
      @brucethemechanic2738 8 лет назад

      An impact wrench. You can buy cheap electric impact wrenches at Harbor Freight or similar stores. If you cannot find one, hard blows with a good hammer (striking the handle of your ratchet or breaker bar) should do the trick.

    • @brucethemechanic2738
      @brucethemechanic2738 8 лет назад

      The reason an impact is preferred is because it can deliver hard hitting blows, very rapidly. If you simply put a ratchet and socket on the bolt and try to turn it, it might turn the engine's crankshaft instead of breaking the bolt free. If you can't find a way to impact the bolt you can use a ratchet if you can figure out a way to keep the pulley from rotating.
