The Khardung La Pass in Ladakh, India is a gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys, and is strategically important for India because it's used to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier. The pass is located on the Ladakh Range, 40 kilometers from Leh, at an elevation of 5,359 meters (17,582 feet). It's also known as the "Pass of Lower Castle".
The pass was built in 1976 and opened to public motor vehicles in 1988. Some say it's the highest motorable pass in the world, but local summit signs and stores in Leh claim it's closer to 5,602 meters (18,379 feet).
