Smile spacecraft (artist impression)
Smile will be ESA's first mission to view the full Sun-Earth connection, filling an essential gap in our understanding of the Solar System.
Specifically, Smile will improve our understanding of space weather (www.esa.int/Space_Safety/Space_weather) and solar storms. The magnetospheric bubble that surrounds Earth is invisible to our eyes, but with its UV and X-ray cameras, Smile will reveal this shield that protects us from the Sun. Its findings will help protect space-based technology and the lives of any humans in orbit around Earth, as well as infrastructure on Earth’s surface.

Turbulence in the Sun’s corona
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.14 часов назад
Solar wind is a never-ending stream of charged particles coming from the Sun. Rather than a constant breeze, this wind is rather gusty. As solar wind particles travel through space, they interact with the Sun's variable magnetic field, creating chaotic and fluctuating motion known as turbulence. This video confirms something long suspected: the turbulent motion of solar wind begins very close t...
Fly over Mercury with BepiColombo
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.14 дней назад
See Mercury in a whole new light, through the ‘eyes’ of the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo (www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/BepiColombo) spacecraft, as it sped past Mercury during its latest encounter on 4 September 2024. During the flyby, BepiColombo’s three monitoring cameras (M-CAMs) captured detailed images of the planet’s cratered surface. Within these images, Mercury scientists identi...
Weak gravitational lensing: how Euclid maps dark matter
Просмотров 48014 дней назад
ESA's Euclid (www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Euclid) mission is surveying the sky to explore the composition and evolution of the dark Universe. But how can Euclid see the invisible? Watch this video to learn about the light-bending effect that enables scientists to trace how dark matter is distributed in the Universe. By making use of Euclid’s flagship simulation (www.esa.int/ES...
BepiColombo to measure Mercury’s magnetic environment during fourth flyby
Просмотров 548Месяц назад
When we look at BepiColombo’s images of Mercury, it can seem like the space around the planet is empty. But in fact, it is teeming with particles - neutral and charged, energetic and sluggish. Mercury has a magnetic field that interacts with particles from the Sun (the ‘solar wind’). This creates Mercury’s magnetosphere - a bubble in space that is shaped like a windsock extending away from the ...
Cluster’s Salsa satellite primed to reenter and break up
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.Месяц назад
On 8 September 2024, Salsa (Cluster 2), one of four satellites that make up ESA’s Cluster mission, will reenter Earth’s atmosphere over the South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area. Salsa’s reentry marks the end of the historic Cluster mission, over 24 years after the quartet was sent into space to measure Earth’s magnetic environment. Though the remaining three satellites will also stop making sci...
Listen to Juice’s flyby of Earth
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
In space nobody can hear you scream. There might be no soundwaves but there are plenty of other kinds of waves! On 20 August 2024, Juice flew past Earth with a closest approach of just 6840 km. The aim was to change Juice’s speed and direction, helping to guide it on its journey to Jupiter. ESA also took the opportunity to activate Juice’s science instruments. This gave scientists the chance to...

Happy launch anniversary, Euclid!
Просмотров 2243 месяца назад
Several team members wish Euclid a happy first launch anniversary in their own language. ESA’s Euclid satellite launched on 1 July 2023 on a SpaceX Falcon 9, and now resides in an orbit around the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2. During its mission, Euclid will observe billions of galaxies out to ten billion light-years over one third of the sky to study dark matter and dark energy. Read more: www....
Seeing both sides of the Sun at once
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.3 месяца назад
This video shows the Sun as seen from Earth orbit by ESA’s Proba-2 mission on the left, and as seen from the opposite side of the Sun by the ESA-led Solar Orbiter mission on the right. The two spacecraft carry an almost-identical imager instrument which takes photos of the Sun in ultraviolet light. The images shown here were measured by Proba-2’s SWAP imager and Solar Orbiter’s EUI instrument a...
Solar plasma flying through the Solar System
Просмотров 7093 месяца назад
This simulation shows how charged particles (plasma) from the Sun, blasted out on 20 May 2024, spread through the Solar System. The Sun lies at the centre of the circle, and the positions of several planets and spacecraft are shown. The colour scale indicates the density of plasma, with black indicating the highest particle density. Further from the Sun, the particle density is scaled so that i...
Comet Interceptor’s boom gets shaken, not stirred
Просмотров 1453 месяца назад
Before sending any mission to space, we need to be sure that the spacecraft can withstand the launch and extreme conditions of outer space. While Comet Interceptor is being constructed, each individual spacecraft component is extensively tested. This video shows the main spacecraft’s movable boom undergoing a vibration test. (‘Boom’ is another word for a rod or arm carrying a sensor at its end....
Animation of dwarf galaxy colliding with the Milky Way
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.3 месяца назад
The Milky Way has grown over time as other galaxies have collided with and been consumed by our galaxy. Each collision triggered wrinkles that still ripple through different families of stars, affecting how they move and behave in space. ESA’s Gaia space telescope aims to unravel the history of our galaxy by studying these wrinkles - and new research from the mission now reveals that the most r...

Absolutely fascinating
I didn't realise Mercury was a giant space qube. Thanks for educating the world. 🤡🤡🤡
It looks weathered...
i think thats just the low resolution. And every impact will create a dustcloud that will settle smoothly aswell
True but still... I believe there is an atmosphere on Mercury. Maybe the temperatures cause high winds? I just lookedit up, it has what they refer to as an exosphere, a thin atmosphere. Like you describe.
So cool
@ESA Space Science Hub : For non-specialists like me, could you explain how the two pair of scales are converted (the two scales on the x-axis and the two scales on the y-axis, respectively) ? Also, do the colors indicate a different intensity, or something else? Could you possibly add a legend for the colors ?
This is a spectrogram of a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum at radio frequencies. The x-axis represents time, increasing from left-to-right, the y-axis is radio frequency, increasing from bottom-to-top, and the color indicates received signal strength with blue representing the weakest signal and dark red the strongest, with the other colors representing intermediate values.
It shouldn’t have sounded as broken as she does ▪️
This will be successful. ❤
cut the video 3 seconds make it vertical and the #short will get pushed out by the algorithm.
That would be lovely. Thank you.❤❤
Happy 1 year in space Euclid ! Thanks to every member of the TEAM for your amazing commitment to enlarge the observation that will lead to better understand the simple and amazing complexity of the “ ✨ thing ✨ ” we live in.
Muy Claramente se observa👀un hábitat de "3ra dimensión" donde de evolucionar seres👽serán de ese mismo grado de avance😳Nosotros en la tierra apenas vamos por el .73% del 1er grado en dimensión. "Escala de Kardashov"
Beautiful Titan!❤Thanks!🪐
Tell me they finally found Thanos!
🤣 what.a.joke. these criminals steal untold trillions from hardworking taxpayers and give us fairytales and cartoons in return “space” (above 100km) is not a traversable medium and the luminaries are not solid bodies that can be landed on or visited cool story tho
Kerbal ass footage
Is this an animation or are these actual pictures/data returned by the probe?
It's mostly real, with some sort of arrangements.
I spotted Waldo on the left.
Fucking fake and hoax
What is with some of the stars moving so rapidly and slowing down. It seems like it would take a tremendous amount of energy to accelerate and decelerate them
We may be consuming galaxies now but we will be consumed in 4.5 Billion years due to blueshift.
😳😮😶 ♥️
This was so amazing to see! How wonderful the universe is, how LUCKY the EARTH! Yet we continue to squabble instead of unite and marvel at our serendipitous fortune! THANKS for the insightful video
gonna leave my comment here so that my future descendant can see
I Love Jonna Napire 💜💚❤ March 19, 2024
So cool!
This is literally the coolest video on this website lol
NASA Use what is called a giant "Long Focal Fresnel Lens" The focal point is so far away all you get is heat and warmth aimed through it from the sun on mars,,,no need for heaters just set up thin pieces of plastic giant "Long Focal Fresnel Lens" folded up in a rocket... I really could care less for getting credit i am a space nut not a narcissist...3b
1:02 here we can see the Ursa Major Moving Group of stars on the bottom right going down (actually they are moving to the right as viewed from the night sky) as they move closer to the solar system.
This is ridiculously cool
I hope NASA has learned a huge lesson with ESA on JWST. Dont rely on Europeans for anything!
Did you figure out the real movement for every background star in this video, or did you just the find the movement for the constellation of Orion and threw random motions in for the background stars? Whats the really bright star that drops below Everest on the left side about a few hundred years before present?
This is an awfully long journey with all those round and round. The Sun is really a bad thing in making anything going to Mercury accelerate too quickly
Amazing video
В космосе самый короткий путь не означает самый быстрый
That's amazing
Anybody know where (or if) I can find this cover of Beethoven Piano Concerto 5 that Debbie Hu made?
check out the astrum channel, some very interesting and informative videos explaining loads of stuff like this..
The design for Ariel seems quite interesting. Like it's primary mirror being elliptical, is it in order to fit relatively large round mirror while not taking too much space or for other reasons as well?
Seth Rogen narrating?
An amazing feat!
Sweet !
Amazing! Work! Congratulations!
Fantastic!
Nice cartoons, next time you need founding will give you monopoly money...
so the sun will push that line back due to its energy levels from the scope
Can I use this video for my RUclips video?
The introduction and normalization (as if it were not too extremely risk-full, even if it were to just psychologically affect others to engage in it, too) of e.g. physical ice moon explorations will certainly lead to astronomically long lasting forwards-contamination, if it happens in a few months, years, decades, a century, or in millennia. Astronomically speaking, to just keep on risking such forwards-contamination - which just requires a 1-time event of its kind to lead to catastrophic consequences humanity has not a shred of a guarantee being able to avert - is not at all sufficient, as one has to think in astronomical time-scales for this matter, where disregarding the fact that the highly irresponsible playing even with just small chances of planetary protection abidance failure can in repetition lead to essentially the same outcome (as it would either way still happen within the same blink of an eye of a time within astronomical times), namely eventual contamination & rapid exponential population growth of microbes on ice moons But instead, the important part - namely to prevent the chance of unfathomable extents of calamity of to the torturous consequences eventually forcefully subjected sentient species' populations that may emerge as consequence of recklessly playing god, kick-starting evolution by contamination - is to prevent it from happening at all ever, and 'ever' is a very long time. I just wish that among the roughly 2090 people or institutions I've contacted so far over the last 5 months to inform & warn them about this long-term fate of humanity deciding matter, there'd been more than just about 1% of them to respond (though in those cases at least with consent), because that's hardly any sufficient level of re-assurance that within the near-future trajectory of the future, i.e. the most critical phase of all in this regard, forwards-contamination risks will be safely outright prevented one way or another. The JUICE mission, just like the Gan De mission, the Laplace-P mission, the Enceladus Explorer mission, the Europa Lander mission, but also interstellar (rather than interplanetary) projects such as Breakthrough Starlight, Breakthrough Starshot, and especially Prof. Dr. Claudius Gros' Genesis project ALL MUST BE CANCELLED. If only more people had the integrity, a shred of empathy, and the mental capacities for understanding, once provided with the information and explanation... it's truly a bleak outlook for - for their very own sake better to never exist, and especially not for billions of years - r-strategist selection species' populations on any ice moon any time in the future at this point, given the overwhelming amount of peer-reviewed scientific studies pointing at suffering to generally dominate among the experiences animal wildlife generally has. At least the Effective Altruism group is for these reasons also strongly opposed to space colonization attempts, but why they haven't been far more outspoken on this grim issue throughout the last 8 years than they have been is a mystery to me. It really seems like one has to do everything oneself. I guess I'll see with how much understanding my informing is met here (and trust me, I've gathered enough disappointing experience to better know to not have my hopes up for it, and it being a very complex, interdisciplinary matter doesn't help either), but apparently I have thousands of more people and institutions yet to warn, all within not that many months, one after another by contacting them, because seemingly internationally, no media agency can be found to help in that regard, besides TED Talk a little bit. In german we'd call this a Trauerspiel - a fiasco.
Hello dear, I have a question about this test, can I ask my question via social network or email?
Can’t wait!!!
