Reminds me of my 4 Grand Canyon trips!
I was hoping to see some footage of the infamous monster surf wave, or is that not part of this section?
The Greyhound? Or is there another monster surf wave I'm not aware of?
Yeah, I'm assuming you want Greyhound Bus Stopper. That's in here. It was breaking and greening. You'll see Spencer catch it and me blow off it when it greened.
You might be thinking of the ones on the new river dries
Oh yeah, good point. Oddly my friends who went to the dries this same day said it was too low, which really confused me
@@dl5604 Yes, that's it. Is that a different section that is dam controlled with releases like on the Gauley?

We’ve all had those days, just wasn’t feeling it! No worries
beautiful skies!! 🌤️
That so looks like the washing machine at sock em dog.
Hell ya!!
Always wanted to see those rapids. Do you have any videos at higher water levels?
Nothing of scouting at higher water, but I've got a couple videos of running the river. There are plenty of videos of people with greater skill than I have running everything, though.
Awesome. Maybe you all could redo after the rebuilding to chronicle the change from the hurricane? All the best and thank you!
I expect that'll be quite some time from now, but I will likely take a hike in to chronicle the new Green once it settles into itself.

Nope; I have no clue what that means.
@@paddlebikediveclimb the mason Dixon canoe cruisers. They're the local kayak club for Harper's ferry
Gotcha. I am very rarely in the Harper's Ferry area, which would explain why I haven't heard of them
Good skills in that crew.
I feel like Center is the place to meet all the shredders you never see when it comes in.
What stretch was that? I’m looking to SUP somewhere down there. Is fisherman’s eddy a good spot to put in? Take out at Anglers or below maybe?
I don't know your skill level, so I won't say what's an ideal place to SUP, but if you want to meet the folks who whitewater SUP in the area, you'll usually find them at Anglers. Or if the level is just right, at Rocky
@@paddlebikediveclimb sweet. And I appreciate you taking into consideration my skill level. I should’ve explained that a little bit more. I’m a comfortable class 3 kayaker/SUP’r. The lower Yough and Stonycreek are my favorite places to paddle. I’ve been doing a lot of bigger water and rafts. But I’m finding myself being a lot more comfortable on my standup than my kayak. But thanks for your input a lot. I really appreciate it. I will check that out. Again, thanks a lot. And keep posting your videos. I enjoy them highly enjoy them.
Cool, if you're comfortable on class 3 big water, check out Rocky Island Waves when the river drops back down to 4.2-4.0ish. It's class 3, phenomenal surf wave, and your probability of meeting other folks who SUP the area is pretty high.
You mentioned being annoyed when stuffing your dry bag into the stern and I was wondering what the issue was? I haven't seen this boat in person yet, but considering it for multi-night wilderness river trips. So, ease of packing the stern is a consideration. Thanks for your review!
The way the Jackson outfitting has cords to hold the back band in place means there are lots of cords connecting the back band to the boat hull that I had to shove my dry bag through. I would not consider this a reason to not get the boat. If I owned it, I would alter the back band-boat attachment to be easier to either detach temporarily or have bigger gaps with stronger material. As someone who was demoing the boat, it was an annoyance that I couldn't fix. I have rented a Jackson (small Antix) before for an over-night trip, and I did move the cords so I could load and unload the boat every day.
I was there Sunday. Those guys were getting it done!
There are some amazing boaters on the Potomac. Always a pleasure to watch them shred.

Me too, was cheering all the way. Great run Tim 👍🏻.
And then the whole river gets reset in these floods..
Yeah. I updated the description to that effect yesterday. Need to update the title, now, too. Will be interesting to see the changes, but for now I'm just hoping everyone in the area is safe and has strong community to get them through rebuilding.
Yay Tim!!! I was cheering for you the whole way down!
That was a really cool edit. You captured it well, quite hilarious in parts. Good to see you take a break from whitewater every now and then… albeit still with paddle in hand… fins on feet… or pushin’ pedals.
Thanks; it was fun. A little frustrating with the map error, but a small enough area that it didn't matter too much.
That’s heavy. Thanks for posting.
Yeah, some pretty bad lines in this one.
Fun day…
Yeah, that was a great paddle!
The water temps dropped pretty quick.
Yeah, and yet the water has felt warmer this week for some reason. Probably I've adjusted, ha
Went last year for my first whitewater rafting trip and had a blast. It looks alot lower this year
The standard releases in the fall are 2800 cfs. A friend speculated that the drought meant the ground was soaking up more of the release than usual. I hadn't been on the Gauley for 2 years, so it felt the same to me. And don't discount the GoPro effect. Everything looks smaller in a POV video than I'm reality.
Is the other slot (Not Otter Slide) in play at 3 feet or does the pyramid rock in the center make it too dicey? I know I’ve seen you run it in another video…
The slot upstream of Otter? I call that one Squirrel. You can run it below 3. It's bumpy. ruclips.net/video/oVxVBGBGW-c/видео.html
@@paddlebikediveclimb Ok, thanks for the beta! 😊
For sure. I think I have always scouted that slot before running it. It's not a first lap for me, so I take a look on the way back up. That way I have the water and rocks fresh in my mind so I don't pin when I run it.
@@paddlebikediveclimb 👍
ruclips.net/video/M9sqvbPMnds/видео.html At 2.97: definitely enough water to run it, but if you are off line, you could still pin pretty easily.
Very cool! We were there earlier today on a raft. We put in around 9:30. What a humbling experience
It's a long day, but so much fun! I was stoked to put on early because we had to drive 5 hours home immediately after taking off.
Not me reading this as ANGLE roll
I'm trying to figure out what an angle roll should be. It could be something...
none of that looked bad to me
At 1:56 I decided to boof a questionable wave, and it turned out to have a rock in it. I'm the moment I questioned my decision to do it anyway, saying, "That looked bad, and it was bad." I sometimes ignore my eyes for what I want a feature to be.
That roll was pretty ugly. His friend needs to relax, do a better set up, and keep his head down. Other than that everything looked good. I think the hole he was stick in was Piddly. I've never been stick there, but I've been flipped and it's the only place where I managed to get run over by a raft.
@@suedenim9208 He did great. He's a new paddler who stuck with it after his first time trying to roll while falling through a hole. Newer paddlers often don't have the ability to recover from a surprise situation like that and eventually hit their roll.
Best videos!! Great run.
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Nice video! At those flows would you say Thunder Dome was all big waves and crashing waves? No sticky holes?
The hole we kept our eyes on at this level is at S-Turn. You can see other holes from the scouting shot, but you'd be hard pressed to get to them. In my mind, the biggest hazards at Thunderdome are wood (think logs or even trees that have just broken up over the Falls on their way downstream) popping up next to or below you, and the eddy lines, which are ferocious. If you swam here, I imagine you'd have a dangerous amount of down time. It's amazing how small changes in the level - even when the water's this high - can alter the features.
@@paddlebikediveclimb makes sense. Thanks for the detailed explanation. This looks like the most fun rapid of Great Falls
Siiick. What boat are you paddling? I like that color way
Small Dagger Rewind. I love this boat
@@paddlebikediveclimb Just getting into whitewater, thinking of getting a half slice. Being about 150lb without gear, how do you think I would fare in a small rewind?
That's my size, and then I load the boat down with more gear than most people carry. It's playful, sometimes my stem sits pretty low in the water, but it works for me. If you're new to kayaking, I'd say to demo as many half slices as you can to see which one works best for you. They're all a little bit different, and some of the newer ones are more slicey (good for play, bad for staying upright if you're not used to it) with bigger bows (good for getting over features). What you want will probably also depend on what kind of whitewater you'll be on and what your kayaking goals are (ask the more experienced folks you paddle with!).
@@paddlebikediveclimb Paddled a medium antix 2.0 on some class II today. First time in a half slice and I dig it. I’d like to get into a small and see how that feels. Then into small rewind. So many boats! Thx for the info.
Just curious about why the left line at 2nd drop of LP?
On my Upper Gauley PFD, one of the several people showing me lines had once flipped on Hawaii 5-0 and hit the notorious rock in the slide. I have run Hawaii 5-0 before, and maybe I will again, but I don't remember it being so much fun that I am stoked about it. The risk-reward is unique in every rapid, and I suspect that there's just something inherent in who showed me the lines my first time down that leads me toward the more conservative line (although for all I know there's a worse, hidden hazard in the creek line?). We actually discussed the risk-reward in the pool below Lost Paddle: probably every paddler is irrationally more scared of some class 1-3 rapid where we had a bad experience at some point, or where have seen something crazy, than we are of other class 4-5 rapids that we run all the time with only had clean lines.
@@paddlebikediveclimb the creek line does not look like a nice place to be upside-down either, but I am glad you showed it. If I ever run the UG again, I shall try it. You might enjoy Peyton Love's videos of alternate lines on the UG.
Yeah, the Gauley is shallow in a lot of places, and generally I don't want to be upside down, ha. I'll have to look up that video, thanks!
Nice, very cool
Nice look at the Upper Gauley. Thanks for posting.
Don't worry, I've got another one coming up that shows the underwater side of a few rapids, ha.
How was the water / air temp?? Going in October in guessing I need the dry suit?
Chilly in the morning, 80s in the afternoon. The water was chilly enough that I was happier in my dry top the next day. By October... who knows, but it'll probably be colder on all fronts.
great video, nice to see all the rapids, especially by someone on their PFD
Thanks! I tend to film more on a PFD as I never know what's around a corner.
I love your filming. You need to compile your shots (between your runs) and make a documentary. The Potomac is such a beautiful place. edit: forget the documentary idea. Maybe not. Editing takes a lot of time.
Thanks! Ha, yeah, editing takes a lot of time. I'm still working on a longer project from last year...
Great video as always. Are you or any groups from DMV headed to Gauley?
I just got home late last night from the Gauley
Like the musical accompaniment…
Thanks! On occasion I find something fun that seems to work.
I didn't know about that left-side line you took at the second drop of Lost Paddle. Interesting.
I like it, and at least for people I paddle with, it seems to be the preferred line over Hawaii 5 0
Superb quality camera 👍
Yeah, it's pretty good. Sheds water well
@paddlebikediveclimb it is about the best I have seen on here with the S24 Ultra. Great for what you're doing man!
Good Beaver beta.
I'm usually not a fan of sharing beta like this, but I figure if I caveat it by saying this is one of the spots where you're more likely to have a bad pin on the Little Falls run... maybe that's okay?
Takin’ the scenic route over the rockies. Lappin’ it up.
Yeah, I'm not doing that route again unless maybe the level is a lot higher.
nice surf man
Thanks!
Not the best place to practice rolls. When I do it there, my eyes burn after.
I don't know what to tell you; I roll there all the time. It's a great place to practice: a chill pool that's deep, your paddle won't float away, enough circulation to keep the water cycling, and at the end of a run when you're as tired as you'll be on this run.
@@paddlebikediveclimb you are absolutely right about the spot. Maybe the water is cleaner now than it used to be.
I learned it as the butterfly roll.
Yeah, he did say that's just what they called it when he learned it. It's always interesting to learn how people have different names for the same thing. Did you learn it for sea kayaking?
Yes
Good moves in the Darkside.
It was a fun level for messing around. :)
Shit in the river and I mean completely in the river. Get in there and you don't even need toilet paper.
