Colin's Performance Corner 2021/2022 Audi RS 3 Driven Review:EP1
Why can’t we have an opening Sun roof.
@gillianstuart332 Tbh, I would imagine it's cos the opening ones create so many issues with leaks, etc, that they decided to go fixed with the frosted glass.
And the price?
The A5 Starts about 43k in the UK to about 60k the S5 is around 65k to 75k
The price racks up very fast when you start ticking the options list. I sat in one recently in Waterford. It was an S-line TDi with a few extras and it was €93k😕
@podge5555 Yes, it's certainly pricey. However, with good dealer discounts and deposit contributions from Audi finance, they don't work out too badly.
The car we see at like 10:36 and 11:58 is NOT the car you're driving during the test, right? This trim does NOT look like the Alcantara style trim you got in "your" car.
@izemanevobike Hi. No, the door cards are from the Audi Launch video car. It's some kind of fabric too but slightly different.
@@colinspcthanks. Strange. Looks like Alcantara in the video and like fabric in the moving stills. Do you by chance know what the interior was called? It’s so hard to see those in real life. Most demo cars are either full leather or standard seats.
The UK spec and European versions are normally different. The Alcantara door cards seems to be pretty normal on most UK Audi. Iv only really sat inside the launch editions also so hard to tell what others are like.
@@colinspc I know. What's extra here is standard over there for many things. I heard you mention "Edition grey", correct? If this is true, than it's got "s-line interior seats, with fabric/plastic leather and door panels and dash "shelf" (not the whole shelf) is "technic fibre". Does that sound ok? Also the car should have come with 21" wheels.
As far as i know s4 is same diesel engine as a6 and a lot users report dead engines under 100k km so maybe keep it only for warranty period. I own rs4 b9 and car is amazing but unfortunatelly i have standart suspension so its liitle bit too stiff.
Not heard much about the dead engines. . The TDI certainly packs a punch anyways!
Yeah they are cheap but in 12months time will have lost another fortune they are financial suicide at the moment. It's quite funny they call it a turbo I always thought a turbo used exhaust gases obviously that's changed 🤣
@acelectricalsecurity You would think that but they are actually holding money really well at the minute if they are around 4 years old. They are selling well and popular so that means it holds decent money. Yeh Porsche kept the current model line structure with the Taycan so was easy to understand the spec range.
Maybe stick to just showroom duties in future 😂
Bought mine is 45k km, bp++, 21” wheels and tons of optionals. Paid 57k euros 😅
Very loud interior when driving. It’s all bull this !
The road noise will be more the microphone picking being over sensitive it's not that loud when driving.
@@colinspc absolutely. The more quiet cars become, the more surrounding noise the mic picks up.
I test drove one a month ago and it’s very quiet.
Sorry for the rudeness …. Don’t know what came over me. Aye ! Yes of course the mounting for mics have an effect on what gets picked up. I recently took my first ride in a Tesla this weekend and I can say that was quiet
The first shot - we can't see the car because the host is blocking the view. The rest of the review - we can only see the host drivving and talking. I appreciate your impresions and talking, but really want to see the car....
There are TONS of videos that show the car inside out. This video's got DRIVEN in the title. That's what I came here for. 😉
@@izemanevobike I didn't see tons of videos, I clicked on this one. I just think a good review shows you more of the car and less of the driver. Peace.
Owner of RSQ8 here, Excellent review. I agree with just about everything you said. I would add, in my opinion the 2025 RSQ8 Performance model should have increased the horsepower more than just approx. 40 hp from 591hp to 630hp. Also, Audi should have included some exterior badging to help differentiate the RSQ8 model from the performance model.
Agree with the badging. That's a bad decision from Audi to remove the front grill badge on all the S and RS models.
If you are in the market for an RS4, as I am right now. An S4 is not on my radar, let alone a diesel. It’s a different buyer with different priorities I would suggest.
I would agree in whole , but it was more a comparison to show how close the S4 is all around. Good luck with your hunt for an RS4. We have a stunning Nardo grey example in stock right now.
I think these are awesome. Id have one if i needed a car daily. I do think there may be more depreciation to come but the biggest hit is in the first few years. Troible is roads are so bad and busy that having a fast car is almost pointless, i figured this out over 20 years when i got my first faster carand all i was doing was following the same lorries etc at same speed with the odd overtake for fun but not really getting anywhere any faster lol.
Trust me, anything is possible for an overtake in this thing. If you have a spare 100m gap you can get out safe and back in.
just got my S4 TDI today that car is so fucking good its insane
You not touch the subject of warranty? Or ive missed it on the video. Im torn between this and a 718T as it's the same price bracelet.
Once the car is out of porsche warranty(3 years), it is up to the selling dealer to provide any warranty. I provide 12 months warranty and breakdown FOC with all cars. However, the main battery warranty from porsche is for 8 years from new.
You can add the 93kwh battery to any model. Don't touch one without an extended warranty. Heater failure and cooling fans are known to fail. Rear lights crack and battery issues with water leaks. PCP is for the car seller and NOT the buyer. The PCP sounds good but you as the buyer like leasing a car are paying the depreciation. You will not want to buy the Taycan after 3 years when the car could be 6 years old. Rapid charging WILL degrade the battery and Porsche decreased the buffer in the battery to make it look better. You need deep pockets to buy one.
We have never had any issues with the above in any of the 7 Taycan we have had in stock 3 years old. In regards to the PCP why would you buy this NOT on PCP? You have someone at the end guaranteed to pay the balloon payment regardless of what the market value is. Why would you not want that security? Most customers won't constantly fast charge the car as 90% of E.V owners charge at home overnight on 7.2kWh charger.
@@colinspc Porsche altered the battery capacity ceiling because the range was crap and every EV will drop at least 5% capacity in the first 2 years because the battery chemistry settles down. The car will say 100% charged but the capacity is less. All batteries degrade with age as well as how you charge them. PCP is for main dealers benefit because they add interest which covers the additional depreciation you don't pay for on your monthly payment. PCP is just like leasing but more expensive. If you can't afford a car don't buy it. Most ev's drop 60% in 3 years so do the maths.
@RB-lt8kt I get your point, but I know battery's degrade. We carry out battery degregation reports for this very purpose on all used E.V. Do you realise that dealers are only credit brokers and not a lender? They only make a commision from setting up the agreement for the lender. Over 90% of the world finances their car so interest is always going to come into play. However, if you are using "cash" on a depreciating asset then I'd call that a questionable call. Also I never advised to buy new. The whole point in the video is to show the value in buying a used one once it's took its hit.
@@colinspc Yes but I think Taycan's have more depreciation to come especially as the new version is out. I got out of my EV because looking at a similar car 3 years old I would have lost thousands more. I bought in 2022 because it was the cheapest option. No one saw the ev depreciation coming. I would have kept my ev if it wasn't for the fact you have to keep using the main dealer for 8 years, battery degradation, value dropping by at least 60% in 3 years. Compared to a 2022 ice car which will drop 40%. Leasing is bad for the environment. I bought a 4 year old ice car that has a 2 year manufacturer warranty but I can scan and repair myself quite easily.
@RB-lt8kt I get it, that's why I said new E.V are really only worth it if you are buying through a company for tax purposes. The used Taycan will prob only drop another 20% of its new price in the next 3 years. It will start to level off when it gets into the 30,000 mark
2:38 - hoping e fuel will take off allowing engine noise and range to remain 🤞🏼
Let's hope so! The cost at the moment is the killer.
S4 oil burner all day long in Avant guise. 700nm of torque and 45mpg+. Makes much more sense. That or a M340d touring BMW.
Interesting review, and I liked your summing up of two great cars, Colin. I'm more of a "dad" driver, but it doesn't hurt to dream sometimes.
how can a diesel engine not sound like a tractor are they using fake audio speakers lol?? I should get a S4 or S5 being a 6'2 in height ? I want a sporty car like my A3 Sline 2011 2.0 tdi black edition
The 6 zylinder diesel is much more settled but still - yes they are also adding fake sound, which makes it sound so grunty almost V8-like... I turned fake sound to minimum and the engine still sounds good. For me the S4 is a grand tourismo... relaxed, sovereign cruising - not for bragging with sound on a traffic-light.
@@ThorDyrden I purchased a S4 2018 petrol - It's expensive to run in terms of fuel I must admit, glad i didnt get the diesel versions too expensive at the time anyway , only glitch is know its already 6 years old which hurts considering my last car was only 3 years old with less mileage at the time.
Great review Colin!
I have a 67 plate B9 S4 petrol, I still don't understand why Audi moved to diesel for the S4 with the move away from all diesel engines!
Your wish may come true cos looks like Audi is going back to Petrol on S model cars next year!
@@colinspc true, then all the 4s become electric! Anyway, great vid and I love my b9 S4, nice to see an everyday experience angle on the RS4, don't feel like I made the wrong choice!
'Promo sm' 😒
Cracking review bro
Great video.I bought the New S4 TDI a few months ago. Got to say the Torque is relentless. . Is is amazing in the corners and in the wet I'm not disappointed at all I love it... also I can get a genuine 52mpg "with the grand son " in the car 😂 keep up the good work 👍
Many thanks. I've done over 14k miles in mine now and can't fault it!
NO WAY 53mpg ????????????? so you can drive it normally and get above say 45mpg how did you hit 52mpg how long was the route?
A bit of a shaky camera, with not the best audio quality. However, although it’s obviously a start-up channel, it was an enjoyable video nonetheless. Nice job, my good man. Oh yeah, I forgot; I’d take the S4 too. I much prefer the torque and feel of a diesel too. Yes, the petrol has a nice revvy feel, but I prefer the pull of a diesel… and the mpg!
Hi mate how difficult was it to change the pcb please let me know thanks
Very simple unscrew the backing plate then disconnect the ribbon cable which connects to the screen then swap the board over. Simply just screw back together.
@@colinspc thanks man
You could get the S4 remapped and it would be a lot closer!!!
True but not worth doing as will devalue the car being it could never be sold by an Audi dealer ever again. Would be faster. I'd say if you did though.
With my mileage of around 2000 miles max per year the fuel economy wouldn't be a factor for me. I might on the other hand consider a petrol S4 Avant. Hearts say RS4 Avant , Head says RS4 Avant bank manager on the other hand says VW Golf 1.5eTSI 😅😅 😅😅 Thanks for the video and prolonging the anguish of choice.
It is a very hard choice!. Thanks for the comment
Are there “Bank Managers” anymore?
The RS4 you drove is optioned with heated steering wheel which only comes in the round shape. There's no heated option for the flat bottom steering wheel. Good video 👍🏼
The flat bottom steering wheel looks way better
Have you seen the Grid Engineering DDU 5? I'm torn between the two
Hi Chris. I have indeed. They are very similar. The DDU5 has more a flush screen right across where the SDU-2 has more a surround round the screen. Both very similar. Will just be preference really.
@Colin's Performance Corner thanks for your response Colin. Coincidentally I've just seen that Laurence Dusowa is doing a video covering their formula wheel and the Grid DDU 5 soon
Hi Chris, great to hear you are interested in the SDU-2 and also comparing it against the quality DDU 5 by Grid. If you are located in the UK, you can test out our dash at either Race Anywhere or Demon Tweeks. The core differences between the SDU-2 and the DDU 5 aesthetically is of course the initial design... With the SDU-2 we went for a very unique and our own design approach. A lot of dashes on the market are designed to replicated the Bosch DDU 5. Our SDU-1 is actually very similar. The DDU 5 also has an extra 0.5 inches... As for cost, with thanks to our awesome customers and the popularity of our product, we have finally managed to get our dash down to £300! For the quality of the product (including the awesome packaging), we will not devalue and go lower. But be assured, you are getting a beautiful, well engineered, UK built product for your money.
Great Video, Brought one myself. sort of needed one for the prototypes in iracing too, same problem with the dash on the wheel.
No comparison in my eyes. you cant compare this to a old EVO
Thank you for the fantastic RUclips review, Colin. Learning how highly our customers rate what we do is what truly inspires us to design, engineer and make our products to the highest quality possible.
No Problem Calum. Thanks again for your great customer service.
💯 ≋p≋r≋o≋m≋o≋s≋m
I do miss my evo though, but I don’t miss the constant “what’s that strange noise “ with a garage trip soon to follow
Good review!! Turning circle is horrendous, don’t forget to mention running a tuned evo involves a trip to the garage 2/3 times a year to keep on top of things at a grand s time
If you don't have the benefit of working in the trade then i agree maintenance can be very costly
Hello, does this Audi A8 launch edition have massage seats at the rear as well? Thank you.
Hi there. No massage only in the front. It has fully heated and electric seats as standard.
@@colinspc Thank you for your quick reply. Also, does it have the new digital matrix-led headlights, digital OLED rear lights, adaptive air suspension and dynamic all-wheel steering?
@@asdewogtt3855 Matrix headlamps come on launch edition but only standard in the normal range from S-line upwards. All come with adaptive Air but unsure about the 4 wheel steering.
@@colinspc Thank you very much, for the information.
I totally agree. I luv the RS3. I would luv to own one as a daily driver. I do own an Evo 8mr and i get people filming me and taking pics of the car all the time. Golf R drivers forever wanting to race me when all i eant to do is cruise along.
Surely Dave would classify that at a racing incident? That was a good race to watch, well done Colin.
Yes i was a cracking race. Glad i recorded it. After i watched it back i would agree it was a racing incident.
Great video Colin, a good rounded and rational comparison. You've summed up well what it is to own and enjoy one of these old school Japanese cars.
Nice driving.
Nice set-up mate. I have just done a massive update on my rig set up. Everything got upgraded except for the motherboard and case. I got the fanatec CSL DD pro and added a load cell pedal. I chose the thrustmaster shifter just to save a couple of quid. I have a GT Track on its way, upgraded from an F-GT lite. I don't have triples at the moment but I do use VR primarily. As it stands the entire set-up (PC included) runs in excess of 3.5K. my mates think I am mad.
Have a sub.
Yes it gets addictive mate. I'm already looking at adding more to the rig.....
I have owned Evo 5,7,8 &10 and loved them but currently have an RS3…have to say I would not flock to any of the Evo’s over the new RS3…by the way my new RS3 carbon edition arrives in September here in Aus….can’t wait
I agree Steve. The RS3 is such a complete package and shows clearly in my eyes how good a similar car in todays age and technology is over what used to be the benchmark.
Colin, enjoyed the comparison, brought back some good memories, cheers
Great video and very informative 👍
Thanks for the support Brian👍
The road noise at speed was so great that I missed most of your commentary. That's a shame because the bits I could make were very insightful. You need to improve your microphone and/positioning on future videos.
Hi thanks for the feedback. Yes microphone position in 2nd half of video picked up a lot more Road noise for some reason. Will try fix for future videos👍
Great review mate 👍 I’ve watched loads of them as I’ve ordered an RS3 and this is definitely amongst the best and most informative. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. All the best 👍
Thanks very much. Good luck when your car comes.
Nice review... other people slating the interior or moaning about the lack of bangs and pops or how much it costs, but you summed it up the way it is. I've got a RS3 carbon sportback on order, in tango red with the RS Dynamic and Comfort/Sound Packs added. Ordered it in October, looks like it'll be with me in March, now I have the build date confirmed. I think the Vorsprung versions are taking a lot longer though. Thanks.
It does bang a little in "Manual" RS mode. Tbh i hate all the fake and artificial pops and bangs. Iv got my Evo if i want real flames haha. Glad you have a build week. Vorsprung models were meant to start getting build weeks assigned by end of this month.
Enjoyed that m8. Ordered my car end of November, not getting it till the summer!!😫 Subbed.
Thanks! Yes wait time is a bummer at the moment due to "Chip-gate" will be worth it when it arrives👍
out of interest …… have you been given the build week ? I ordered the Vorsprung in August ……. no build week yet ? 🥲
@@LIGHTFOOT1963 Most Vorsprung models haven't yet. AUDI initially said at least end of December before build weeks would be given for this model. Should be any day now.
@@colinspc thanks for the reply …… I do hope that’s true
@@LIGHTFOOT1963 No m8. Placed the order and handed over my deposit, and was told August/Sep, but it might be as late as Dec 22!!!
Fantastic video Colin. You really should do more of these.
Thank you, i plan to do some more in the coming weeks so stay tuned.
