whats the story on those strat mods?
@@BlackMath69 I routed a blank pickguard. Dual sounds both coil tap via switch and sds-1 single coil. OBEL and buffer. I’m a Dimarzio dealer!
Thanks for sharing! Curious about your signal path, especially with regards to your Qtron. Are you boosting the signal into that? Do you run a Drive pedal into it? Really great sound man!
@@BrianBowes thanks.. no boost. My guitar has a JFET follower but no the Q is the first pedal in my chain
Dude, that was awesome! Strikes me as not an easy song to learn and remember, but so magical to do so.
Dude, I’m an electronics guy. And a guitarist for 30 years. I have never considered this OBEL possibility. TRS cables are neat. I used to want a 9v “phantom power” that I could use to power emgs without a battery. Never tried it, but i suspect it would be noisy One of the coolest TRS tricks Ive heard of is using it to send both pickups separately so you can either footswitch or midi program your pickup selection. This obel thing wouldnt do much for me, i don’t use tone or volume knobs. I just need a bridge pickup and an output jack. Ill mute with my tuner
Also, I’m in central PA as well
@@Ottophil thanks for checking it out. The 9v would probably be noisy if you’re using a switching type power supply. Batteries are best because they’re true DC without ripple. A shielded cable would help but you’d probably be better off w a battery.
@ yeah, i came to the same conclusion before ever making it. Not only does it seem impractical, i don’t even use active electronics anymore. Its funny how big central PA is, I’m still 2 hours from you. You’d fit in at my job, were all EE guitar nerds, but we don’t build anything guitar related.
The Q sounded great.

Hey bro, nice mod! is it a drop in replacement on fender strat?
@@raywong2484 there is some basic soldering that has to be done, but yeah it replaces the standard output jack
Love your passion...and sound
@@chadapold1055 thanks!
What do you like better sarnos spectrum or twin reverb?
@@62impalalove36 spectrum is the preamp section of a twin on steroids! Spectrum all day!
Sounds great. What’s more important, pick ups or speaker?
D120
@@saywhat445 I’d say the speaker. Pickup placement is important, but there’s no way to get that tone w a Jensen for example. Middle pickup single coil and the rest is in the hands
Cool man
That’s a 2100, correct? I’ve got my eye on a used one, and have been looking for good instructions on how to connect my Sarno to it. I will be connecting it to 2 separate 8ohm JBL cabs. Where did you get your cables? Did you make them yourself?
@@keseysvenisonchili that’s a 250 but same series. (2) 50w mono amps vs (2) 100w mono amps. I do indeed make my own (and sell them too.. www.dan-jam.com )
I have just gotten parts to make a similar build with a different preamp. Do you know what kind of cables are needed to connect the preamp to the McIntosh? Also need the cables to connect the amp to my speaker. Many thanks I love ur content.
@@TubeLeftOozeRight McIntosh uses RCA in. You’ll need 1/4” to RCA from preamp to Mac. Mac out is bare speaker wire or you can get L shaped banana adapters to go on the barrier strip from the Mac. Speaker will be 1/4” jack most likely
@@DeadHeadDan 🙏 thanks!
You are one of the main reasons why I got into the dead with that pedal video you made. This is amazing, great performance.

great sound
Thanks!!
What is the ideal reverb range for jerry tone? I leave mine at 5 on my deluxe reverb but some people tell me that is too much, but it sounds correct...
Honestly it depends on your guitar volume, picking strength, tone knobs, preamp section.. etc there is no “correct number”
Before Elvis, there was no one!
Are you the cops? No we’re musicians.
Dude sick setup im jealous. I just bought a twin reissue and was wondering if i should get a preamp like yours instead of modding the twin sounds damn good
Hey man thanks! So the reissues (have PCBs instead of point to point wiring) aren’t very easy to work on. I love twins, but having a little 1u preamp and another power amp is very handy and take up less space.
I really dig your sound. I am in central PA too. Are you playing anywhere?
Yeah all the time! I’ll be in Harrisburg today 2-4 at spring gate playing an acoustic duo. Check out danjamison.com
Huh. So, would it be unnecessary if I use high output pickups?
Hard to say without hearing it!
Do you think a fender bassman with e120s would produce a Jerry tone?
Why the reverse polarity? I haven’t seen this when people talk about Jerry’s speakers.
Those model JBLs were manufactured that the red was negative and the black positive… some speakers are made that way for specific applications and it doesn’t matter how you wire it until you’re pairing with another speaker. Then you want to make sure they’re the same polarity
@@DeadHeadDan thank you, I need to check how my e is wired.
hope u are still around bro
Sure am!!
@@DeadHeadDan good to hear, my buddy gifted me the thick air and was looking up a demo and found u , u sound great and was worried since u havent posted in years! have a good gig tonight bro! not sure if u are familiar with the lore of the susquehanna but im sure that spirit will be on your side <3

@@DeadHeadDan sweet! i used the thick air for the first time today, although i wiish i had it at the beginning of my board,.
Sounds great! Nice picking! Seems like you’d be tempted to just leave it on. What situations do you leave it off?
One might use it on only for solos.. I’d personally keep it on all the time
Amazing demo. I modded a PRS as well, an SE Custom 22 Semi-hollowbody. Don't have your high-end gear - it sounds awesome - but your demo sounds close to what I've been able to achieve a different way. I'm using a UA Dream 65 as the preamp and running it directly into the effects loop return of a Roland Blues Cube, bypassing its own preamp and hoping its power amp is clean enough. The Dream 65 has a "Vintage 1968 2x12 Fender Twin Reverb cab w/ original JBL D-120F speakers, mic’d with a 57 and a 121 ribbon mic." It also has period Reverb. I use a ParaEQ Deluxe to cut the harsh highs and add some boost into an ODR-1 then an J Rocket Silver Archer and finally a slight delay into the Dream 65. 77 is my favorite Jerry tone. I don't completely understand how or why everything works, and I'm still experimenting with the coil-taps, and the various boosts, EQs and volume levels. But I'm able to hear Jerry tones. Jerry said that with his later guitars he was able to get a whole range of tones. So as a listener it's very hard to know what exactly he's doing to produce his tone over the years when his guitars were heavily modded. Other than his hands. Thanks again. Very instructive.
Awesome. Sounds like a cool setup. Most of 77 was Jerry w the Travis bean, I do love that tone! Having a 5 way switch with switchable coil taps gives you a huge range of tones!
That's Amazing my God. Thanks
Loved the Ruben and Tennessee licks but, what’s the name of the first bluesy song part if it’s not improvised, I swear I’ve heard it before…
“Tore up over you”
@@DeadHeadDan Thank you!
Very difficult song to pull off. You did it! Excellent job.
Thank you!
I feel stupid for not being able to remember the name but what is the song you start playing at 2:48?
That’s Reuben and cerise !
Great tone and playing!
enjoyed your video style :). what do u think about the phasor he used? i been using my boss pf3 for a quick rise up set fast.... it is not the swirly shit, it just a quick fatten up thing.... congrats on the purchase, that is some real money thee4ere :)
Great vocals!
Very nice! Guitar AND vocals.
So is it basically a preamp boost? I read that it makes it so you don’t lose your tone when you roll off the volume knob, but I wonder how that would affect something like a germanium fuzz. Because those clean up when you roll off the volume
You can control the gain / boost via a small potentiometer. It adds a nice sparkle so I’m sure you can dial in your fuzz nicely
Just shut it off when using fuzz as it wants to see a high impedance signal
hot stuff!
Thank you!
The TT sounds halway between the K and the E. Wow.
