index 845 mill with VFD(s)
This is my Index 845 mill, circa 1965 2HP 3 phase with a B&S #9 taper. It has two VFD's one runs the table the other runs the spindle about which I talk in this video. This machine also received a DRO over the winter and is my mainstay for mill work. Sorry about the mess but its show season so everything is in chaos from moving things to and from my camper and truck. The controls are run in a parallel and the left side control mounts inside a piece of uni-strut and has magnets if I want to remove it or if I need to swing the head(the uni-strut is attached to one of the traming bolts). This is my SB heavy 10 3 phase 3/4 HP lathe, it has a VFD running it at 240VAC single phase. The controls are 24VDC including the drum switch which had to be rewired a little to make it work. Because it has a D1-4 cam lock chuck I can quick reverse it, but if I do it too quickly the drive will fault out which is a bit safer. I found your video while looking for VFD conversions for Logan lathes. This is awesome. What VFD did you end up using for this?
I think that one was a Mitsubishi Frequel removed from a machine, its got to be 25 years old now its 240 VAC. Any drive will work its not hard, my newest conversion I bought a 80 dollar drive of amazon about a year ago. Buy one that you can use jog speed if possible, and wire it to be able to stop instantly this makes power tapping easy.
