Any insights or tips on how to maintain a spreadsheet without being an excel expert or overcomplicating things? Love the vid btw!
When I realized how low my profit margins were, I had to churn cards faster to build a bankroll.
That's exactly what you should be doing. I think there is a big misconception that sports cards generates high yield per card (probably true during pandemic) but unless you own something rare that you bought a long time ago, the best way to earn is churn.
Good insights man. Question - the times that you evacuated the collection from Pwcc and got the cards shipped back to Malaysia how did you deal with the taxes on the shipments? I mean the cost you pay in shipping the products back to yourself seems minimal when compared to what you'd have to pay on gst? Especially since the cards you own /Sell are over 6 figures $. Any tips or advice in how you went about not paying thousands on tax?
You are right to point out the substantial tax on such a large shipment. Hence I had to engage a friend to hand carry them back from the US as personal effects. I don't do this often as it can get expensive for individual cards, but the situation required me to shell out some money for this.
the microphone is picking up background noise
Yes I noticed it too. Gonna get it fixed, thanks for pointing it out.
What turns off a lot of buyers from Fanatics is how high prices get on some of their bigger ticket items. eBay has much more reasonable prices
Have u got any specific examples?
@@TheCardBosstake a look at the 1986 Jordan sticker PSA 9 or Lew Alcindor rookie PSA 7, among a host of other examples
For those cards specifically, centering + eye appeal carries a higher premium despite having identical grades.
Would you recommend using fanatics collect even for cards between $20 and $200?
Which platform are you moving to?
Next vid 😄
Next vid is up!
think the card may be fake the space between the cert and uia are off and a bit off on the font
Totally agree with you. I was doing eBay and fanatics collect for my selling but have went exclusively to fanatics about two months ago. Much better quality and customers seem to like the weekly Sunday auctions every week so they know ahead of time when the auctions will end. Better customer service too
Cheers we're on the same page! I'm on Fanatics exclusive as well which I will cover in an upcoming vid.
@ nice! Looking forward to your next video! Thxs for your insights
400/price... not bad man
Its decent, but its really an average of the really high end at $8k to cheap packs at $15.
the best way to make money in the hobby is raw to grade, but I don't know how viable that is in Malaysia.
prob the best way is to buy nfts/crypto. as WW3 becomes clear... assets will go down, esp cards.
Raw to grade is a big part of my business as well. The logistics is not as straight forward compared if I was in the US, but where I move the cards after its graded is where you have some power (and decision making) to yield the most revenue.
@@TheCardBoss can't you just buy cards off CardHobby, have it shipped to Malaysia, review them and send the good cards to PSA then sell through the vault? I'd hope customs fees aren't high if you send out one shipment a month.
Malaysia imposes a high customs fees on trading cards (32%) hence there is quite a lot of gymnastics that I need to go through. Card Hobby isn't one of my preferred sources to obtain cards ATM but I might work out something in the future when I visit them in Hong Kong next month.
@@jamesnguyen7069 BS.
Super jealous, amazing pick up and definitely iconic and once in a life time!
I love you master wong
Did u comment on the wrong vid? lol
Monster pick up. Probably should take it out from vault and physically hold/ feel it. 👍🏼
Haha sounds like a very nice idea. But I'm not sure if I want it to be travelling on a commercial plane halfway around the globe. I might do an in person pickup next time at a future show.
@ collect in person then bring this to a NBA live match. And make a streaming from it. 👍🏼
That would be a dream
Wow congrats, what a beautiful card
TQVM!
What?? How was this possible?
Am i missing something here? lol
Congrats 🎉
thanks for sharing! really insightful and keep up them videos!
Thanks for the support!
I wouldn’t even pay $800 for those fake 1/1. Topps releases odds so day 1 anyone with a brain calculated there’s 56 1/1 wemby which is tarded. There’s 3k boxes 6k wemby autos. Easy math. Not worth 8k. You do get 2 wemby autos so even though the 1/1 are worthless every box is 2-4k value min which is acceptable compared to garbage boxes. I just want the wemby stroud red auto 16k seems steal. 😂😂😂
Good talk…never been a fan of unlicensed anything. Sorry for the loss, I know the pain.
Stings. Lesson learnt. Move on.
sorry for your loss bro it's just money, keep looking forwards!
Right on!
You bought it just to instantly resell it?
That wasn't the original plan. But when the RPA 1/1 dropped from 100k to 20k u know something is up.
Trash product. Trash company. 90s are the best
So the 1/1 went for the cost of a box?!? Yikes … this can be a dangerous hobby. Be careful with auctions.
Dangerous hobby indeed...
Dont all the base cards have 1/1s? So theres really aBunch of them in the product?
Indeed. I believe there are 20 base superfractors out of a total of 56.
Gosh, I feel sorry for you. Why buy it when you are trying to sell it so quick? Just to flip and make money? Why wouldnt you buy it for 15-16k or whatever you did and then DO NOT SELL IT. Take it to a card show and trade it to someone for 15-16k in credit. Someone would have done that b/c you were the last sale of it so thats what the price is to go on.
Good point. Here's why. When I bought the 1/1 for 16k the 1/1 RPA closed at 100k. Subsequently the next 2 1/1 RPA closed for 50k and 20k. There was no way a base 1/1 would ever reach back to 16k wherether in trade or auction. Yes I could simply hold and wait but I think the price would tumble down further or cut my losses. Did I expect the card to close only $400 above the price of a sealed box? Not really. But if u look from a different angle, the sealed box is way overpriced when it's biggest hit - 1/1 RPA is only 3x the box price where in most circumstances it should easily be 10x. Conclusion 8k might be the floor for 1/1 base and I expect box prices to drop to 4k.
Also , topps is unlicensed, but they have a license for wemby autos over panini. So the only exclusive thing to buy from topps is an auto card at least.
Yep exactly what I mentioned in my previous video. Basically got too triggerhappy on this one.
Buy Jordan , Kobe , Brady. Not even Lebron. Stay away from modern.
These are textbook plays. Not saying its wrong, but some risks need to be taken to pull ahead. Unlicensed Wemby clearly wasn't one of them.
Of course man. This wemby shit smelled bad ages ago. Why buying 8k box hahah
Plenty of people got sucked in. This sale might be the first domino to fall. We'll see in a couple of days where the next 1/1 non-auto superfractor on ebay end up in a few days.
You are collecting HYPE not cards.
Sorry for your loss, but you are one heck of a man to take it on the chin, stand up, and keep going. That my friends is what a winner does even when he/she looses! Keep up the content and buying ;-) Like you said, you win some and loose some. I have lost 4-6k on a bad purchase but I knew I could make that back once I learned the mistake I made...just gotta be patient for those cards that you feel have room to run.
Cheers to the man who understands how the game is played. I've had my share of wins, but we've seen so many of those "glory" videos so its only right people should see the other side of things. And you are right, the work and process continues!
Unlicensed products always end up not doing well in the long term
Agree - though many can argue that Wemby is special. But with a zillion of his cards out there, unlicensed non-autos are probably rank at the bottom of the barrel.
Not always. Unlicensed NES games can go for a lot, mainly because of rarity
When it’s all said and done, Tim Duncan will have a better career than wemby . Look at how popular Tim Duncan is. Not popular at all .
Wemby will unlikely breach Tim's 5x trophies but I do believe Wemby is 5x more popular , probably with 5x the number of fans (globally) Tim will ever have. I love Tim as a player and what he has achieved, but from the hobby perspective Wemby is going to be what people be talking about until the "next wemby" shows up.
It's tough trying to invest off online auctions. With all the fees....the margins are non-existent.
All true, but there are ways otherwise people like me wont exist!
You going to be ok.
All good buddy, thanks for the kind words!
You seem way to calm to lose that much money. I’m assuming you can afford to lose that much.
What is he supposed to do complain to us? Haha it’s a gamble he knows the risk
Its part and parcel of the game. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. Sometimes you win big and sometimes you take the punch right in the nose. I just feel people dont talk about the latter that much to not send the wrong message to the market or to not embarrass themselves.
Right on! Lol
Buy 16k of Caitlin Clark now and it'll be worth 30k by April
I like Caitlin and always have my eye out on something good. But sticker autos and non-game used mem don't resonate with me unfortunately.
it went above your valuation! May I ask why you sold?
Did it? Lol i think it went under at 8700 only. Just moving some pieces around to get some lower pop items.
@@TheCardBoss Oh, there was another BGS 9 that sold for 9900. I thought that was yours. Can you make a good living being a full-time dealer?
@@4rebecca That one I believe had a special eye appeal sticker on it which carries some premium. Definition of good living differs when you ask 10 different people. The money is just OK, you are not building generational wealth unless you take certain big risks, but in return you get time and flexibility and doing what you enjoy day in and day out. Watch my earlier video on the 5 things you need to know before doing this full time especially Item #1. Thanks for the comment!
I’m not a modern collector (too confusing, too many cards), so maybe i’m the wrong person to ask. I would take the Jordan BGS 9 in a second. I have a Jordan PSA 5.5, but i would love to upgrade someday I do have to ask because you said those cards are so liquid. Doesn’t the post 2000-present cards feel like the wild, wild, west? I like that the 86 Fleer Jordan is his only rookie (the 84 Star is also his XRC), but it’s easy to collect. Joe Montana’s rookie is the 1981 Topps. Gretzky rookie is his 79 Topps or O-Pee-Chee, Rickey Henderson is his 1980 Topps. How do people know what to collect today?
Appreciate the comment! I'm a 90s guy as well. But when it comes to liquidity it's not just the era, but the price point of the cards itself. The Fleer MJ will have no shortage of buyers but it comes down to timing, as there isn't a large pool of buyers waiting to pay $10k on a single card as compared to a large pool of buyers whom are willing to spend $500 - $2000 on a good card. Patience will reward you for holding the stronger card (in this case its the MJ hands down) but when you're running a business, the ability to cycle cash quickly takes priority most of the time. Hence that was my conclusion at the end of the vid. Pure collectors these days go after what gravitates to them - be it a true rookie, RPA, 1/1s etc with the restriction of budget and that's why this hobby is very vast. As a seller you ideally would like to cover as much ground as possible (some stores do that very well) but niche online sellers would need to pick their lanes.
Thanks for the answer as i’m always interested in what’s selling in the hobby. Do you sell graded base cards for $50-$1500? Is that a healthy market because it appeals to so many low end buyers?
Havent graded a base card in a while and I dont think its worthwhile unless you have a Whatnot channel going.
I respect your honesty and how you are able to swallow these mistakes. We all make them
Appreciate the kind words. This one (the Wemby) is going to hurt real bad....
You could try getting the bgs to PSA if it looks good. The PSA 9 goes for much more
A bit too late for me now haha. But these 1986 MJs usually don't cross very well (see Probstein!)
Your music taste is great and love 90’s cards
Glad you enjoyed the sound. It was really blocking all my screams of horror in the background lol
Why does everyone want to be a dealer ? You guys are just a bunch of gambling addicts.
One of my collecting mantra is I never ever purchase unlicensed products - the buyer base just isn't there especially for higher-priced items
99.9% time you are right, but there are some historical examples where unlicensed were chased hard as well (Stroud, Anthony Richardson....)
That mercury product is a bad investment. Unlicensed. The 1/1 will probably go for 2k or so. And even then it's bad. Few years from now all wemby stuff will significantly fall. Not sure what will appreciate to be honest, with all the over printing and hundreds of thousands of psa 10s from the product. Just massive dilution.
I expect to take a big hit, but wouldnt expect to be that big of a slap. Wemby will always be Wemby. Gonna keep my fingers crossed for the next one week.
Everything that FIRST sells on Fanatics collect is a pump and dumb. It’s shill bud to the max. All insiders. Look, you’re a real Owen and getting absolutely CRUSHED on it a few weeks later. This hobby is filled with garbage people like the inside guys at Fanatics.
Thank you for sharing these great lessons. They are very important to apply in any business. Victor did drop 50 points in last nights game. Hopefully that will help with your mercury card.
Yeah an extremely fine silver lining! Thanks for the kind words.
"Stay in your lane" is the big take away. Sorry for your losses but you seem to be a very smart buyer/seller, I am sure you can recover. Gotta stay patient too...sometimes I feel the need to buy "something unfamiliar" vs waiting for the cards I know well. GL
These are lessons even for the most experienced.
I hit two marvel sketch cards in one box
Nice!
I believe Marvel one of one cards are going to end up being more than some athlete cards after Even the serialize numbered marvel cards
Every genre (sports / marvel / star wars/ pokemon /MTG) will have their individual stars and what I would categorise as individual stable markets. The key to success is to be top of the genre you enjoy regardless how other markets are performing against yours.
Welcome back man what have you been buying and selling lately?
Never left, just been super busy! I've got videos on what I've been up to (in terms of buying and selling) in the past year leading into 2025 coming up soon. So stick around for that!
