Step By Step Guide to Processing Your Meat Birds
Nice sharing very informative good morning new friend here watching from philippines 🇵🇭
Hello from Texas! Thank you so much for watching 😊
Hey 😃 new subscriber here, great video. I haven’t done meat birds yet but I might try. We have laying hens and one thing I’ve been looking into is the soldier fly larva… they are high in protein and u can raise them yourself. I’m still on the research phase myself but thought I’d mention it to maybe bring ur cost down slightly? There’s a few RUclips videos I’ve seen where a guy has a freezer full for his birds over the winter lol Does anyone reading the comments have experience with these? Pls let me know. Thanks for the video, looking forward to more 👌👊
Melissa Do you know Jesus is a prophet of God
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! You should definitely try meat birds, they are pretty easy for what you get! I also think you can really taste the difference. It is funny you mention the soldier flies. I actually had a friend over this past weekend explaining how to sustainably keep soldier flies. I think I am going to try it, especially for my egg laying ladies. I just need to get over the idea of breeding larva🤢 I am also curios if anyone else has a soldier fly farm for their chickens!
❤😊 ruangan rumput yg luas, ditanam apa aja itu? Aku dari 🇮🇩 kota payakumbuh
Thank you for watching! It really depends on the season what we plant in the garden. I plant some fruit trees in that grass area near the garden.
Hello your topic is very interesting. I have never raised meat birds. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thank you so much for watching! We have loved raising them, they are fairly easy and do not require much space for the food they provide.
Hope once a week. 2 days to go lifestyle, 1900 to 1999 across the 🌏?
Thanks for sharing. I look forward to the next video 🙂
Thank you so much for watching!
Great looking garden, great use of space too
Thank you! Hoping to keep expanding.
Silly flop lol.
Nice grill I grew up in tge town where they came from, looks delicious!
Oh that’s fun!! We love it, it makes putting a brisket on in the middle of the night a lot easier.
I wish I knew this when I had chickens because it would have been healthier for them and saved money to.
I am constantly learning! If you ever have chickens again, now you know 🐓
@@StillWatersRanch May god bless you.
😂😂😂😅😂😅😅
Hahaha always entertaining 🤣
So beautiful in the countryside 🥰
Yes it is, I love it 🤎
what you are doing to those "meat birds" is really animal cruelty - keeping them in such a small place under a metal roof - what do you do when the sun burns down on it? do they have to sleep on the ground in heaps? sitting around in their feacal matter all day - also what pasture are you talking about?
Aw shutup. Half the shit you eat will be treated likely worse, even though stated otherwise.
I appreciate your opinion. These birds love being on grass and get moved multiple times a day. I definitely do not want to eat anything that is sitting in their own fecal matter all day haha.
You should see the conditions that your store bought chicken lived in, trust me its far worse. She just has to make sure she moves the chicken tractor enough because that is a lot of birds.
thanks for sharing your routine
Thank you for watching!
How deep is your pond?
In the deepest part it’s about 15 feet.
@StillWatersRanch nice!
You're awful late. I'm sure the rooster crowed hours ago.
Haha I normally start this routine between 7-7:30 this may have been a few minutes later/taken longer because I filmed.
@StillWatersRanch I beat Roscoe to the punch. I start at 430.
Wow! That is very impressive.
I use to have to clean the roof of the chicken house too in the other coop. Not any more. Your very busy in the morning doing chores 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
It’s so funny to see them all up there at night! Do you have a different coop design now?

You've got a busy morning routine. I'm not sure I'd call it quick, lol, but maybe for you. I'm a slow poke 😂
Yes! It is a lot to do every morning! And this is my quick morning haha some mornings I need to change out waters or do a few extra things.
You're cute, God Bless ya...I do yell "Heads Up, Gals!", but the roosters usually beat me to the punch. :D
Agh I need a roster or maybe a few guineas because the hawks are BAD.
Omg at the song! Hahaha. Great video.
Hahaha 😂 you should hear the rest of our playlist for chicken processing day 🤣🤣🤣.
@@StillWatersRanch If there is a way to share it, please do!
To a 5 gal bucket, I add 1/2 cup ACV & 1/2 cup diatomaceous earth...just good stuff for preventions & speeds up the process. If you've got free-rangers/mobile runs, fermenting seeds is the way to go! :D
Love adding ACV, but I’ve never added DE! I am definitely going to try that.
Nice! It's like malting basically. How does it make the feed last longer exactly?
Great question! Well, the size of the feed doubles when you ferment it. But the real answer is because of the added nutrients and that it’s easier for your chickens to digest and absorb the nutrients, you can feed your chickens about 1/3-1/2 less feed depending on if they are free range or whatever other food sources are available. I hope that helps:)
I have 10 chickens free range with the colder weather bugs are harder to find I used crack corn and crumble as their main feed , your correct fermented feed is the way to go the eggs have so many health benefit's unlike commercial farm eggs ,
So so much better for you and the chickens! Love that your birds are free range as well. Do you ferment the cracked corn in the winter?
I ❤❤
Any time you move to a new area there is a learning curve, even if you are an experienced gardener. I would use rat poison before moth balls. Moth balls are pretty toxic to the environment. Cats is probably the best option. By the way, I was all against using rat poison until one ran across my foot in the horse barn. Hate something that is faster than I am. It would help to keep the grass around the garden mowed short. That way owls and hawks can see them better. But I am terrible at keeping the grass around the garden short, so not judging. I had a couple of years of total failures the first couple of years at a new place. Finally figuring out how to grow in a heavy rainfall area.
Thank you so much for the encouragement! I do know that I had a set up that worked before I moved, and I will find that grove again. It can just be frustrating sometimes. I have heard that about rat poison that it really is not very harmful to the environment and is a blood thinner humans take, it just affects rats more extremely. Thanks for that idea! As for the grass, you are completely right. That would probably help A-LOT!
@@StillWatersRanch We had a dog get sick right after we set out rat poison, in the tack room where nothing but the rats could get to it. Took him to the vet and he said unless the dog directly ate the rat poison, it would not hurt him. We were afraid that he ate a rat that had eaten the poison. Vet said it would be highly unlikely a big dog, (doberman) would get sick eating a rat that had been poisoned. The rat poison today is much milder than in the past. Dog got better, he just had a cold.
Interesting information about chickens. Is it possible that your right rubber boot has a large tear on the left side? Your feet will certainly not stay dry in wet weather.
Ohh yes, my boot has a large tear and I absolutely need new boots. My foot gets wet every time I’m watering or cleaning water troughs!
Excellent information about chicken feed fermentation. I wish I knew this when I had chickens because it would have been healthier for them and saved money to. What a beautiful copper planter (I'm guessing you picked that up from an auction 😁) in your garage. It's going to look amazing when you clean the oxidation off. Well, maybe you won't clean it because some people like that patina, lol. I like the shiny natural copper look.
Thank you for watching! Isn’t that planter a fun find?! I got that at a garage sale! I’ve planted some rosemary in it on my patio and it is so cute.
I buy beef bone broth and add those bones like you have cook them along with veggies and take raw ground beef squeeze it in hands with some seasoning to make it into paste some times I use the ground beef that has been smoked use blender to make everything puree take ladle put some broth in the blender take veggies out blend them into liquid do same with beef and bone merrow pour back into pot let cook I put in small container freeze will add to soup and shave some for hamburger and other items for more flavor even making gravy my cats love it to
Thank you for sharing! I love finding ways to add extra flavor to things.
I want to try bone marrow but I don’t know what bones to ask for nor do I know where I’d even get them
Same
You should try it! I would look for a local butcher or meat market and ask if they sell any beef bones for bone marrow (should be pretty cheap there)! I also think Whole Foods or specialty stores sell them, but it may be more expensive. Another thing to note, these are cute length wise, it will also work if you get the ones cut in rounds.
The dog coming in like ok my turn
Hahah so true!
I usually make bone broth with my left over bones, this is a good idea as well
I love making bone broth! I have some bones with less marrow in them that I use for broth.
I use to eat bone mark, your way is interesting. Looks good 💕nonnagrace 🐓
Ohh how would you make it?
People who know
💀
This might be dumb, what does it taste like? no offense to your cooking but It looks weird 😂
No offense taken! It is different. It’s like a super savory butter. Some people will whip it into butter and make a fluffy savory butter.
its really meaty but also tastes like butter and somewhat nutty like brown butter. If you ever had meat stewed with oil its somewhat similar
If you don't like the texture of cooked non-crispy chicken skin or fat in meat, you probably won't like bone marrow. If you don't mind those, or if you like them, you will probably like it.
It’s like a mix taste of butter and a good broth, with the texture of butter generally. When I first was offered it I thought it’d be gross and after one taste it’s like top 10 favorite foods

Hello, you’ve explained extremely well I have regular Elaine birds mine are dual purpose birds, but I don’t plan to do any meat birds, but I enjoyed watching yours very much so thank you very much for sharing it with us🐓NonnaGrace 💕🐓

Sorry you had such a disaster with planting the fall garden and having it all eaten up. I can relate to crap happening that's for sure. I would say a huge yes to some barn cats for sure.
I know! Sometimes it happens so fast, I don’t have time to react! I am replanting this weekend though, so let’s see how that goes:)
@@StillWatersRanch Great. I look forward to following along 🙂
Sit there at night reading a book out loud...
Hahaha
as a farmer, if the mice eat my plants I eat the mice
For real! I don’t want to eat the mice, but I do want them to be gone!
Cats, wire mesh, poison
Perhaps a mesh or net to prevent whatevers eating your garden from getting in. Mice n rats can still chew through but yeah best idea i got. Is there some sort of layering you can put on top to deter rodents? Apparently peppeement oil can help
Ohh I will try peppermint oil! A mesh is a good idea as well. Maybe they will move on if they don’t have easy access.
A cat.
We take care of them as in the end they are taking care of us
Absolutely. Plus so much healthier!
Lindsay, if you want some replacement plants, you're welcome to come get some. We're done with sales for the season, and we sold out of a lot of varieties, but you can help yourself to anything that's left. No charge, just come by whenever and pick up what you need.
Thank you so much! That is so so kind of you. I will absolutely stop by.
@@StillWatersRanch Also, hot pepper spray can be a deterrent to small mammals. Get some habanero peppers and run them through the blender with some garlic and water. Let it sit overnight and then strain out the solids and spray the young plants with the liquid every couple of days until the plants are big enough to no longer be appealing to rodents. It's not 100% foolproof, but it does work. Keep the spray in the refrigerator so it doesn't get moldy, and don't breathe it in or get it in your eyes!
Might be the open field your beds are in
Could be! Except there is irrigation out there for the fruit trees, so that makes it nice to have it out there.
@@StillWatersRanch idk how serious it is but ya dont want them to think theres food and keep comming back. if the beds are anywhere near you feed your chickens, the mice or rats might think thats where the food is too. maybe mowing and clearing away the weeds and grass around the beds and the stead a lil might help a bit. my aunt when we'd go to our cabin would cut and place onions slices around so whatever mice laid claim to the cabin when were not there would piss off while were there. idk if it works well outside in the beds or fields, but i dont think they like super strong smells
