Singers not singles
Peerless
Been looking for this for YEARS
All I've had was monkey women, and they were not on Heroin! Games are all I've ever known! Going back to Chicago cause people have no hidden plans! Simply, Larry
Funny, the Steely Dan track "Your Gold Teeth" directly borrows the "there ain't nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do," line.
sing it now, Joe Williams.
Joe Willliams is gifted performer. I like the way he gave a context to the song with his albeit lengthy intro. The main thing that puts me off him a wee bit is the lack of a smooth flow to his singing. There is a good live version of this song by Jimmy Rushing with the Benny Goodman band. It is more straightforward but it shows exactly what I mean by flow of the song. And Rushing doean have a smooth-sounding voice either. I saw Joe Williams with Basie live in London UK in the early 60's. He was fine. A couple of years later Basie was back, this time with Jimmy Rushing. That was hugely memorable. The first half of the show the band seemed a wee bitty pedestrian. In the second half Rushing came on and he transformed the band which responded magnificently to him, and really started to swing. It was like a different band. Ever since then, Rushing has been the number one for me. Basie himself described Rushing as the greatest male big band singer of them all. A great Blues singer, and not only the Blues. However, I'm still going to be listening to more Joe Williams as well. He is also a class act despite my reservations.
Could you please tell us what album this was taken from? Thank you. I think it is the among the BEST renditions of this song.
😎

Joe Williams tore the place up at the Newport Jazz Festival, 1962. I'll never forget.

Heard this first in 2003 DJ Sneak @ I Love Techno 👏🏼
Did y'all ever hear him sing the headache blues in the BC Headache Powder commercials? My teenage friends and I fell in love with Joe Williams at the moment. I even had a boyfriend named Joseph "Joe" Williams.
