LPAPA Mentor Demo: Glow!
Просмотров 8 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Following the standing-room-only "You Glow Girl" demo at the 2019 Plein Air Convention & Expo, Aimee recaps the principles of how to make stuff glow in oil paintings in this video originally broadcast live on May 4, 2019 as part of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association Signature Member Mentorship series. (Phew.) TLDR; the glow happens *off* the object.
How To Take Decent Photos of Artwork Using Your Phone’s Camera and Genius Scan For Posting Online

Use your phone and the Genius Scan app to take photos of artwork, such as paintings. Genius Scan is a PDF scanner with a crop tool that will unskew images and allows you to place each corner manually. First, take a photo of the artwork, using a light source that best shows the color. In the 60’s they used to shellac pocketbooks and magazine pictures on the wall . Is this how they did it ? Wanted to put fashion pics on wall with the shellac but I don’t recall how we did it in school .

    Hi Aimee - I was told that Titebond II (which we buy by the gallon for furniture building) is unsuitable for painting supports because it has a pH of 3 and would therefore not be considered archival. But the Lineco neutral pH adhesive is prohibitively expensive. Would your gesso protect or shield or encase the acidic glue and therefore make it archival? Thank you!

    • @CelesteGoldfish

      oil paints are acidic so the paint will degrade the fibers over time; its the same principle with oil on canvas, if you want your works to last for a good amount of time there needs to be some kind of "sealant" to protect the base layer.

    • @omdraws7325
      @omdraws7325 2 месяца назад

      The oil binder will be absorbed into the paper, so then the paints will lack lustre, with your painting appearing dull/appearing matte. The oil will eventually make the paper deteriorate. Since you can obtain water based zero voc shellac, and it’s so inexpensive plus it dries within minutes..it’s worth sealing whatever drawing, watercolour or plain paper, prior to applying shellac. If your artwork turns out well.. you can cut it out of sketchbook and mount it on a panel, using an acrylic medium or a wheat or rice glue. Handy!

    I have a question I bought paper for oil painting, but if I apply sellac to the paper, will it have a similar effect to applying Jetso?

    • @aimeeericksonstudio1463
      @aimeeericksonstudio1463 10 месяцев назад

      Paper prepared with either Gesso or shellac is good for oil painting, but they have different qualities. Gesso is water based and makes a coating which adheres to the surface of the paper. Shellac soaks in and coats the paper fibers. The main thing I like about shellac is that it doesn’t warp the paper. It also preserves a papery texture, which is nice to paint on

    • @starbucks1971
      @starbucks1971 10 месяцев назад

      @@aimeeericksonstudio1463 The reason I asked this question is... I purchased paper specifically for oil painting. This was because the paper absorbed too much paint. It absorbs too much, so I use a lot of medium oil and oil paint. Can I reduce the absorption if I use sellac? I've been stressed about this problem for a month.

    • @aimeeericksonstudio1463
      @aimeeericksonstudio1463 10 месяцев назад

      @@starbucks1971 Ah. Yes. Shellac will solve this. Try one application, and see if you like it better. If it's still too absorbent, apply a second pass--this time it will sit on top rather than soaking in, and will be much less absorbent.

    • @aimeeericksonstudio1463
      @aimeeericksonstudio1463 10 месяцев назад

      In a triad palette, combining red and blue gives you the purple. A neutral color by definition does not have a strong hue identity. Adding the yellow pulls the hue away from purple and towards gray.

  • @paulappswildlifeart
    @paulappswildlifeart Год назад

    Hi Aimee, I have just watched your shellac video, never thought of it as a barrier base, used modern gesso or rabbit skin glue sizing. One question, I always thought that shellac when dry was quite brittle and wondered how the substrate may handle cracking over time, from handling before framing maybe. If it does not crack in the way I am thinking, it would be a great way to go. Cheers Paul , ps subbed btw

  • @HondoTrailside
    @HondoTrailside Год назад

    The reason a lot of people use linen, other than marketing, is that it is much stronger than cotton and therefore one can use a finer weave, for a finer finish. When mounting to a board, the strength is irrelevant, as the board will carry any loads. So muslin is perfect. On could argue that a smooth surface would be better still. That comes down to taste, and feel. The Mona Lisa was painted on wood, not even plywood, which is very stable. So one can certainly do good work on smooth surfaces.

    • @Handles-R-Lame
      @Handles-R-Lame Год назад

      Depending on your medium this _mostly_ true. If using oil paints it's best to size the fabric with some acid free glue. I'm not entirely sure if using wood glue is technically a neutral ph glue but after the sizing completed, as long as you apply a few coats of gesso you're good to go. If using acrylics you practically can just paint on the wood and be fine, us oil painters always got to work harder for our art. Then again our oil paintings tend to be admired much more! 😅 Personally I've always adhered my linen or canvas(want to try muslin soon) to a rigid support makes for a more responsive stroke plus it never will lose its tension. I've heard polyester makes a good surface as well as nylon if you can find these fabrics in a strong enough weight, worth giving them a try.
