The Thames Valley: Past, Present and Future - snapshot of English rural life
You may have seen Jim’s previous photographic books on Whitchurch, Pangbourne, and Henley, celebrating English community life and beautiful local scenery. Jim’s new book builds on these themes but, at over 3 years in the making, is much more ambitious, telling the story of the Thames Valley’s history or the first time be discussing key issues the region is facing going into the future. Here is even a chapter on Hardwick’s unique community!
Filming didn't do the beautiful photos justice, so if you'd like to see them more clearly, follow the Dropbox link to the slideshow: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/stbvdhlegvoy9ovg9ae40/Thames-Valley-Presentation-28-Nov-2024v2.pdf?rlkey=vm86p5qond3qwgs1mvpscdj2r&...

I'd be totally willing to engage with any comments that actually make valid, critical arguments complete with justifications and explanations for the stances being expressed, and in the absence of totally irrelevnt ad hominem attacks (or any other logical fallacy)

Nose rings, always the nose rings THERE IS NO FREE SPEECH WITHOUT HATE SPEECH I want everyone to speak openly to know who my enemies are

a really long way to say that you only agree with free speech if falls into your pre-approved topics . if critical thinking can't hold up against opposing opinions it's a failure. might I suggest some anti-woke common sense .I know you won't get to Virtue signal but you will have a more productive and happier life.

Hi. I haven't at any point said there are approved topics, and critical thinking isn't about opinions, it's about dealing with facts. Opinions don't come into it. Mine don't come into this video. This video is about critically evaluating the motivations behind some of the applications of the phrase - which is what critical thinking is about. Interrogating the meaning, intention, motivation behind the way things are presented, and recognising when reality is being twisted for the purposes of manipulation.

@@natasharobson3873 yes your opinions are in the video if you're going to temper free speech and critical thinking. by creating safe spaces and limiting speech as you call it hateful . free speech and critical thinking are intertwined together if I have to worry about offending you I can't think critically. if I can't have a discussion about the bad ideas how do I figure out what the good ideas are.

Does critical thinking mean explore new ways of thinking within ourselves or social dialogue.

hmm. In a way it can be interpreted in that way and mean both - certainly the way I have interpreted it in my work, and the way I think we need to understand it in the contemporary world, involves self-reflection (metacognition, in fact) and ALSO thinking about how we interact with, and receive and understand what comes from, others. Does that answer your question? If not please let me know - I might not have interpreted it right!

Hi, sorry, I wasn't notified about this comment. No, that is true. But how is that relevant? I haven't at any point suggested that is the case. This video is engaging with the fact that disinformation often preys on our tendency to dislike those we perceive as not being in our groups.

@@SM_zzz I think maybe I didn't make the point clear then. I mean that you can't make negative assumptions about someone as a product of their being part of a specific group. Which to a point does support my assertion: stereotyping doesn't work because it rests on assumption and oversimplification - people aren't characterisable in that way. People are complicated. No one conforms to a simple set of assumptions connected to the group one perceives them to be part of.

I'm speaking not solely on positive or negative stereotypes, but in general. One could assert that we are individuals and "should not" be judged by our groups as a whole however the undeniable truth is that we are indeed tribal by nature. "Stereotype accuracy is one of the largest and most replicable effects in all of social psychology. Richard et al (2003) found that fewer than 5% of all effects in social psychology exceeded r’s of .50."

@natasharobson3873 It's ok, your point was clear and I understand that you're coming from a place of compassion and empathy. I respect that and I'm not saying you're "wrong" per se. My perspective however is from more of a rational and logical standpoint. Cicero the great debator taught us to combine Ethos, Logos and Pathos (Ethics, Logic, Compassion...roughly speaking) when making an argument. I'm coming from the Logos side and because of you I'm opening up to seeing and understanding the Pathos side. Thank you, by the way. 🤎
