Arrow-K Bees
Добавлен 14 мар 2023
I started with one hive, then two, and now over 50. I have grown on a shoestring budget. I make my own equipment. Beekeeping has moved from a hobby to a part time job.
Decisions... Small hive in late October
So, this was a cutout I did August 26. They immediately requeened...Numbers are low... I ended up reducing it down to a nuc... I'm hoping the larvae that are there will give them a boost enough to make it... There is always a decision to make with these things. I have a few I could combine with, but that has its own issues. If I get this one to make it, it will be a miracle.

Winter Hive Configuration
Просмотров 103Месяц назад
In this video I explain how I prepare my hives for winter. I briefly explain the equipment and supplies I use and my strategy.
Bees in a Soffit Again
Просмотров 1282 месяца назад
This soffit removal was a bit of a rush job. I got there in the evening to assess the job and ended up doing it in about two hours just before dark. For that reason, I didn't have that many great explanations or camera shots. I Install it at my home yard and have since combined it with another hive.
Winter is Coming!
Просмотров 1372 месяца назад
Every year, my mind starts focusing on winter earlier and earlier. By now in the end of August, the queen is already making "winter bees" that your whole winter success hinges upon. Don't let winter become a time of frustration and disappointment. Start getting your bees ready for it!
Gold Rush! Honey

A video showing collecting honey and a little about how I extract.
August Long Langstroth: Fit to Explode.
Просмотров 922 месяца назад
This is a late summer hive check on my wife Lisa's hive. She has been super busy with her work so my son and I pulled it apart to see what was up. With 8-10 solid brood frames, this one is a candidate to pull frames for fall equalization.
Hiving a Late Swarm
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
In this video I brought back a swarm to my house in August. It was a decent swarm, but late swarms have their challenges. I unload it into a double-six frame nuc. Some drawn comb had broken and fell to the bottom of the tap so that was scuttled (no eggs or resources). This makes my 20th swarm caught this season.
Checking a Frisky Hive
Просмотров 313 месяца назад
So, this hive is the descendent of a colony I caught 4 years ago. It has been consistently aggressive in an interesting way. These bees don't chase me all around or sting my dog. As a matter of fact, they have always been like every other hive until the end of summer. Then, as soon as I crack the lid, they start stinging my clothes, gloves, etc... Last year I had killed the queen in the spring ...
Beekeeping Tools of the Trade

In this video I go through my tool caddy that I use for beekeeping, If you are wondering what tools are handy to have for working hives, check mine out.
Bees Being Bees in July
Просмотров 553 месяца назад
While checking hives near the end of July, things start looking different. The queen is laying less, the bees start packing more honey in the brood boxes, and the bees start getting more defensive. These hives have a bit of all 3.
Beekeepinmg Hack: Drying Wet Honey
Просмотров 1453 месяца назад
In the fall, we often have incomplete and partially uncapped supers we pull that are high in moisture. In this video, I show some small things I built to help lower moisture content before extracting.
Bees Squatting in a Ceiling
Просмотров 1103 месяца назад
In this video I removed an average sized hive from a living room ceiling. The bees were entering from a soffit where the 2nd floor level cantilevered out. The job took 5 hours start to finish and the bees are flying in my quarantine yard. I rubber banded in 7 frames of brood so they have a decent chance of overwintering.
Harvesting Honey: Liquid Gold
Просмотров 1163 месяца назад
In this video I am pullinmg capped honey frames. In total, I pulled about 22 gallons worth of honey this week. It took just a few hour to extract it from my Hillco 18 frame extractor... I let the bees do a lion's-share of the clean up.
July Outyard Check: It's Always Something
Просмотров 1124 месяца назад
In this video i go through 6 hives in an outyard where I had some swarming issuse 3 weeks earlier. Bees were frisky and not as great an outcome asI was hoping. It's always something.

May status check: Long Langstroth Hive
It looks like those top boards are too big. It looks like you expose too much of the hive unnecessarily, which goes against one of the main purposes of a long hive.
Never knew that about oxalic acid
@@rachaelasher1646 oxalic acid kills the mites on the bees but has very little effect on the bees. The concentration is not that much compared to amount in common food items and is metabolized and cleaned up in a few days. The down-side is that the acid does not penetrate the cocoons so you have to give multiple treatments to get a high percentage
Is the foam to keep the bees warm?
@@rachaelasher1646 yup, most of the heat is lost through the top and not the sides.
Thank you Arrow-k! We love you sm!!!!
Were you able to find the queen? I place a queen excluder over the box and place a medium empty on top of the excluder, then I shake the bees on the excluder to find the queen and have been very successful with that. Nice job!
Good idea. I didn't have a queen or she was damaged. They requeened from comb/eggs I rubber banded in. She should be back from the mating flight this week. Otherwise, I will combine with another hive. At the end of good mating flights in Michigan though... I had 4 full frames of brood so population is ok...
It's Dadant size?
Just found your channel and subscribed!! I'm a beekeeper too! I use latches and hinges on my swarm traps to hold the lids on and it's much easier to manage. My torch makes quick work of ants! Swarms are wax making machines for sure! When I have stuff I don't want to dump in the hive I dump the bees in front with a ramp so they can just walk in. I have 2 gig garbage bags of comb from cutouts that I'm cycling through my "Lyson Solar Wax Melter". I love that thing! Thanks!
Did you get attacked at all while weed-whacking?
@@l.kersca6841 nope. They appreciate the clearing of their flight path.
Cleaning up the left overs.😁
I've seen where foreign beekepers use a mold and melted bees wax to fully form the sheet of hex frames. Does this method lead to more honey production?
Thanks! I appreciate the like!
I just love this guy! He's a great teacher and a real bee charmer. He's also a man who stands for faith and family. ❤
Great job!!! Wow!🌻 I know you do not eat the removed honey but feed it back to other bees-great job!!!🎉
🎉😊
❤
Why not use a bee brush???
So awesome🎉
I had a couple of hives with Chalk brood and it fixed itself. Good luck bud!
Thanks. This was a pretty severe case.
So glad you’re ok!
It’s actually fun stuff.
You are crazy. I see one and I go running in the other direction to avoid it. You are playing with a ton of them here. No thanks!
So, I only show pulling one frame of brood for the queen castle in the video. The other 2 sections of the castle were off video.
Nice job. Enjoyed watching. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks.

This is Isabella from your first trimester
Hi Mr. K
See, I do it the opposite with patties in Wisconsin. I give smaller cluster less and bigger cluster more because of give beetles if I don't grab them off in time. But my hives are right in yard so can go in often.
yea... part of my reasoning was that I didn't want those huge colonies to get too big too fast. smaller ones need to not lay too much before the population is big enough to cover the brood.
@adamkerschenheiter right. And the weather can change any minute still. It's up and down this time of year.
Good video
Thanks
Hey mr. K these videos are so cool keep up the work love the bees!! Mason kausch
Thank you. It should get better as I become better at camerawork and editing.
Good to go for more bees.
