I’m believe he and Sam started touring nationally about the same time, Sam in early 50’s as a Soul Stirrer, Johnny as a Swanee. That they possessed similar tones is more akin to Claude Jester style.

@@JaySmooth90s Jay Fulton I don't know how old you are but you need to do some research on the Soul Stirrers Lead Singers from back in the day, I'm getting close to 70 years old now, and about the Lead Singers who came close to sounding just like "The Master Sam Cooke" and the wanna be "Sam Cooke's" sound a like singers, you can't compare Johnny Jones to "The Legend" nuff said. Johnny Jones sung with "The Soul Stirrers" back in the day, he was a wanna be Sam Cooke lead singer just like me, Johnny sung too hard to sound like Sam Cooke and the others leaders singers did too, Sam Cooke was a smooth singer and Johnny Jones had his on style the way he sung. Johnny was a great lead singer when he replaced Sam Cooke back in 1957, I can't say this was the year he did this but he did a great job for "The Soul Stirrers" when he sung lead for them, it's a recording out there with him singing for them if you didn't know this. Johnny Jones was my good friend when I was singing with "The Five Blind Boys of Alabama " back in the 80's. Johnny Jones was a great lead singer for "The Swanee Quintet of Augusta Georgia before he died and also doing lead with the late great lead singer Percy Griffin. Johnny Jones also sung R&B and he had a great 45 record called "The Tennessee Walk with another song on the other side, check it out. Now these are the real sound a like "Sam Cooke", Johnny Taylor & James Phelps, Willie Rogers had his own style and sounded great, the late Jimmy Outler was another lead singer for "The Soul Stirrers" and Jimmy also sung R&B too, his song is called "The Three Little Pigs" and he has other songs too that sounds great, Jimmy was another lead singer for this group and to me he sung too hard too wanting to sound like "Sam Cooke" like the legend, he had a great voice. All of the others lead singers did a great job getting "The Soul Stirrers" over and this is who I chose to be the ones that sounded just like the legend. Check out "The Love of God" sung by the late Johnny Taylor and check out "The Clefs of Calvary lead singer "James Phelps" before he joined "The Soul Stirrers". If you listen to "The Highway Q C's from back in the day, the lead singer was "Johnny Taylor" sounding just like the legend "Sam Cooke", I rest my case and I'm gonna say "I Want Some Where to Lay My Head" sung by The Late Johnny Taylor & The Highway Q C's, can I get a witness out there? Jessie Jackson and The Rainbow Coalition.. His natural sound and range was comforting.. not strained or unnatural..He was introduced to the Soul Stirrers by the late LC and David Cooke.. Agreed, neck to neck in my opinion as performance goes. Maybe Sam was a little more charismatic with his looks lol
