I think this is because WoW nowdays is focused mainly on it's end-game content. They let you level as fast as possible so you can basically start the actual game, that is grinding your current-expansion currency and do raids. And they give you as many paths to choose so when you are making your next character you can take a fresh path and not be too bored. It's hyperfocused on vets, not on new players. And that always pushed me from playing the game. I played it from time to time since BFA, but I always feel like the game isn't treating me as actuall player, but rather as vagrant who can either ascend and became true player or left the game

Wasting time culling stratholme when he moments before stated his plan was to catch up to the caravans and prevent them from reaching the rest of the outer villages is bad writing, he character assassinates himself for no compelling reason and what he does simply does not make sense, how Jaina and Uther react also does not make sense, they should've killed Arthas before he killed an innocent person, or atleast attempted to. The story is so bad that headcanon has to take over, headcanons like "he had to make the tough call, or he had to act urgently" even though he had just made the call to race down the grain caravans to save his kingdom, and he just witnessed Uther fucking solo an entire village of undead it's not like his paladins couldn't handle an outbreak of undead if Stratholme did pop off. Arthas should have been killed by Jaina and Uther for being blatantly uncharacteristic, demonic, and deranged and/OR he should've been under the compulsion of Mal'Ganis to act. Him just "rationally" choosing of his own volition to make this choice against his own will for no good reason is the bad writing, there's nothing in this that compels one to believe that he made a bad or good choice, it's just stupidity, all the way around, it's not brashness, impatience, manipulation, cowardice, fear, loathing, it's just highly unreasonable writing.

The narration is good, but the editing is incredibly annoying. You don't have to put stock footage about every word you say in the video. If you say the word "step", I don't need to see a man taking a step. If you say the word "see", I don' need to see somebody looking into binoculars. Is this second grade English? Seems like we are learning basic words. The video would be much better if you just had more Starcraft footage running in the background. The actual narration and story is good, no need to distract the viewers with completely unnecessary stock footage.

When Uther and Jaina abandoned Arthas, it made his fall all that easier. He made the right call with Stratholm and those two put their personal feelings above the good of the kingdom. They loved him and it was good times with ole paladin Arthas when the decision were easy, but the second he had to put on the crown it wasn't fun for them anymore. Who knows what would have happened if they stayed, but we do what happened when they left. The dev trying to make a modern day analogy was stupid. There was no Lorderon CDC or an Azeroth doctors without borders. I would bet all the no money I have that had if York had been assaulted by a plague of undeath unleashed by a demon then King Henry might have done the same.

2:00 Okay something you got flatout wrong about, there were folks at Bungie did have plans to make Halo 4 however because infighting with themselves, Microsoft and other factors going on at the company. Heck, originally they were making Halo 4, then they decided to make Reach instead around the time Halo 3 was finishing development. And some of those ideas and concepts went over to 343 as well, like the Promethians for example. A lot of people don't want admit this or see this way, but Halo 3 did infact leave on a cliffhanger with Chief saying "Wake me when you need me." And that final scene with half the Dawn approaching some kind of planet. I know that Bungie had said that was "A call out to Marathon" back in 2007. But, I'm sorry objectively speaking you can't end your story with something like that first of all. That's like if Star Wars Episode 6 ended with several Star Destroyers looming over Endor after the victory against the Empire. SECOND. You think Bungie is also going to give away what they are working on in the background or ideas they have going on or whatever? They didn't announce Reach til 2009 which was two years after Halo 3 came out, samething with Halo 3 which was two years after Halo 2 had come out. If Halo 3 was meant to be the ending of the series or trilogy or whatever and if Bungie had the balls to really end it here, then I'm sorry, I would've had Chief either confirmed DEAD and KIA or I would've had him at the ending ceremony with the Arbiter with Chief taking off his helmet announcing his permanent retirement. That would've been a good way to end the series if you ask me, "Wake me when you need me." to some comes off as a good ending a poetry with CE. But, really it comes off as more cliffhangery, and its even worse with that extra scene with half the ship approaching a Forerunner world.

I saw another video that made a great point about Arthas in Quel'thalas. All he did to Sylvanas was personal. The objective of the lich king is to simply raise more undead. There was no need to, after killing and raising Sylvanas, to keep her self awareness, and torment her for an entire year. The lich king has no need for that. His genocide is dispassionate. He has no reason to just torment a person, and keep her body in an iron coffin to further torture her. That was personal. That was all Arthas. And the fact he kept her blood alongside all the trinkets of the people he hurt and betrayed is disturbing. It's like a serial killer keeping mementos of his victims. Arthas isn't redeemable. He is a monster

For me, as a player that does almost EVERYTHING alone in WOW, it's okay to be called "The Champion". The feeling for me is immersive because I explore almost everything alone, do all the quest on my own and go throught the questline on my own. So beeing "The Champion" is the way I see my character anyway.

    • @AlexBarrGameDev
      @AlexBarrGameDev 2 месяца назад

That's cool - if that's how you like to play and it doesn't break your immersion that's great but this really is a prime example that modern wow has become more of an RPG rather than an MMORPG. I'm inclined to play alone as well, but back in the day the game pretty much forced you to play with others and that usually lead to really cool experiences and memories.

FANTASTIC VIDEO AND FANTASTIC POINTS, this coming from a vet of wow, though i did stop at "pandaland" retail and continued on a private server with WOTLK 3.3.5, still to this very minute of writing this comment. i tried retail again for warlords of Draenor and didn't like the graphic upgrade nor the garrison system. fast forward to this video and seeing the current state of retail wow looks horrible! wow in itself is supposed to be all about a nobody who becomes a somebody. there is no better feeling then going back to a old zone and feeling superior to what was once a struggle. there is nothing better then spending literal months grinding hard to get to "the goods". i wont go crazy making all these points as you did a good job making them and im so happy you feel this way. blizzard has absolutely lost track of what wow is supposed to feel like to a new player and how to rope a player into playing their game for literal decades. they used to be the master at this. WC3 is still one of my top 20 games of all time and WoW classic era, base, TBC and WOTLK levels 1-80 felt like a perfect story in a complete chapter book. levels 1-10 for human is your example, that is "tutorial area" and elwynn forest, then after level 10 you head to stormwind then head to westfall 10+ and the epic part of that area is experiencing your first dungeon, the Deadmines. you feel challenged and then feel like arnold schwarzenegger once you down the main boss at the top of the boat. in this mess youre playing in this video, youre nobody and wisped away as arnold schwarzenegger on a epic looking mount that everyone has, good analogy with the pokemon card i got mine from bedford movie theater and when i went to school everyone had it too, including you. Asmongold almost convinced me the war within was like wow in its roots at its core. thank you for showing exactly what the war within is to us, players who enjoy feeling like nobody heading out on a trail we set ourselves on and making a crazy long in depth journey out of it that is worth a movie written by peter jackson. ill end my rant here, but thank you for this, i can sit comfortably on my private server and remain where the game was at its peak. i have more to say but ill keep the nitty gritty for another time. keep up the good work!

The big reason for making it so you can go straight to Dragon Isle is flow specifically for new players. Basically, Blizzard *wanted* you, as a new player, to go to the new 1-10 zone and then go straight to Dragon Isles. You broke from their design plans by going to Elwynn. Before the level squish, you had to level through each tier of content and it was incredibly confusing. If you play with a fresh account, the game won't actually let you play it the way you did specifically because Blizzard realized awhile ago how much of a mess leveling is.

@@AlexBarrGameDev It still has its clunky elements, but if you follow the design intention, its.. Okay. You still get thrown a lot of random names and are treated like a really big deal despite being a level 10 nobody, but the overall leveling process is at least kept somewhat cohesive. And this way of doing it ensures that you are being given specifically information that is relevant. You are being given a sort of synopsis of what happened most recently before you dive into the current tier of content. I feel like Blizzard mostly leaves the old content alone just to give older players something to do and explore. They don't really want fresh players to wander around vanilla zones.

The culling of Stratholme wasn't morally grey. It was morally correct and the only right decision. Also, if the undead had any will enough to affect the lore then the entire Lorderon wouldn't have died in WC3. The Lich King had control over every undead. That was the Lore. This was 100% true until the Frozen Throne expansion.

I agree with you 100% that Ed and Kelly moved unnecessarily cruel in the time travel episode. Gordon's only other choice other than integrating after 3 years of waiting on a crew that never came would have been to off himself from the torture that is isolation. I always wondered what their actions would have been if they reached at that 10 year date and Gordon did that. There was no empathy for someone who had to basically, from his century's perspective, turn into a barbarian by hunting animals and evading all other human life. One could even argue that by being so long in the past that Gordon could have affected the timeline by killing an animal that he shouldn't have or affecting a section of the forest that should not have been affected. He moved like they absolutely did not care about Gordon and this is coming from a guy who was willing to overlook his ex-wife polluting the development of an entire civilization and the lady herself who polluted it by not reporting it to the admiralty until they realized that that entire world's development was poisoned. Edit: included the word 'animals' after hunting

Then the Zerg lets you know what the evil threat is. Then the Protoss lets you know what Deus ex Machina exists to stop that theeat. They replicate that again in Brood War. But thats it, starcraft 2 doesnt build on that at all.

Part of the issue is that the player characters in Starcraft 1 aren't really characters. They're just there to be the POV for the player. So when stuff happens like Raynor rebelling against Mengsk, or Tassadar rebelling against the Conclave, or Duran screwing up the Aiur op intentionally, the player character can't really say anything or get a chance to side with anyone. We just kinda follow what the story tells us to. We have to rebel against the Dominion, we have to go looking for the dark templar, we have to go merc Stukov. There's the Nuke/BC choice on Korhal, but otherwise that's about it. They at least tried to do more choice-based stuff in Wings, but of course that was more work to implement, so it just kinda got dropped in later games.

The marketing campaign for the new trilogy, prior to the changes to the plot, were great. Halo 4 was a set up for a change in dynamics for Halo 5 that never was implemented. The "traitor chief" story-line was really good. It painted that ONI is covering up another treat's arrival and is silencing the truth. The reporter getting it sorted out, and the increase in tension of every teaser so the game could show a Chief against the universe plot was so well developed that playing the game itself was a let down. Halo 4,5 and infinity were safe bets.

The key to really understanding this part of the story, is knowing where did Uther go after he left Arthas. Unfortunately, none of that dialogue is present in lore in anyway. Our assumptions would be: 1) He rode back to Lordaeron City (it's long way) to inform King Terenas 2) Gathering the Silver Hand / stayed in Eastweald 3) Set up a perimeter to quarantine with his small force and watch the horror unfold from afar. Fortunately, we do have context from the next cinematic. Which says "3 days after the purge" Uther returns to Strath.. we can narrow our choices to 1 and 2. Later in the cinematic he mentions "inform King Terenas" that Arthas took 1st Legion, and his personal followers to Northrend.. So Terenas was either never truly informed about the Culling, considering Arthas has the greatest logistical mind and mobilize an entire legion in 3 days maybe less. So we can possibly deduce Uther was in Eastweald of the time. With that in mind, knowing that Uther was close by to Stratholme he was definitely planning on a big quarantine or preparing to fight a city full of Undead. Which lead to what I think what Uther would've done if he stayed. Uther would not be part of Arthas' encampment at all. UNLESS the dialogue changes drastically. We have to assume Arthas still gave the 2 orders to Uther. "Dismissing the Silver Hand", and "Getting out his sight".. Uther either would've created a Refugee blockade at 2 Spots where his Silver Hand will be at its best. Alonsus chapel, and Crusader's Square. His job is simply rescuing as many Villagers as he can lead them out of the side entrance and try to avoid conflict with Arthas' forces or even convert them to his cause. This is the idea of keeping the characters still true to their core, and keeping the personalities consistent in this present moment. Probably reaching pretty hard but it think its pretty good analysis.

That being said while killing Stratholme wasn't Good it wasn't nessecarily evil either. Just brutually pragmatic. To go over the points... 1.) Lordaeron was several levels of fucked if Stratholme wasn't dealt with. The largest human population WOULD have doomed Lordaeron quickly if allowed to turn. 2.) Arthas/Uther/Jaina quarantining the city wouldn't be much better as they would've been overwhelmed by the denizens of the city had Malganis been allowed to turn them (As what happens in the fail state of the mission in WC3) . You can argue the extra forces of Jaina/Uther would've held longer but even with them they were massively outnumbered and would've had to retreat or die and in doing so they leave the surrounding country side defenseless to the undead. 3.) The Denizens would've been met with a more horrific fate as they were torn apart by loved ones and then forced to serve in death. Its also not like they could be allowed to escape the city as this is a magical plague that can be activated either after a set amount of time or via a trigger. So if Jaina or Uther established a refuge camp of the "Well their not undead currently" behind their lines they would've had to deal with two fronts of the undead pouring out of Stratholme and the Undead in whatever camp they set up. Might as well leave them all in Stratholme in that case to be ripped apart by the Undead. Would've been easier and just as effective of a solution in saving them. 4.) This isn't a zombie plague, this is a plague with malevolent intention controlled by an intelligent foe willing to use the dirtiest tactics to win. Arthas already knew this, Uther didn't truly understand though. I don't believe Stratholme is what sped up Lordaerons defeat, in fact if Arthas had stopped there he probably would've really crippled the Scourge plan to take Lordaeron as defenses would've been on high alert after that and all food was going to be screened from then on. Arthas however couldn't accept staying on the defense as he DID feel guilty for killing his own people, He did feel like he failed them for not thinking of another way, and the light abandoned him because he lost faith in his path. (This next part is a little bit of speculation but I don't think its wrong) Arthas probably felt like he lost control of the situation and the only way to retake contorl was to pursue Malganis and end the threat to his people. (End of speculation) Stratholme isn't what damned Arthas it was just the Catalyst to send him over to edge. What damned Arthas was when he burned his own fleet to keep his men from returning home, when he betrayed his mercenaries, and finally when he was given one final offramp, one final chance to turn to another path, Arthas refused Muradin's warning and the rest was history.

Also remember that’s Atheroth, a dark place to live where war is something normal and we got a twisted morality there as a something normal . Strathholme was a point of grey moral peak where we got a lesser evil to win over bigger . Arthas is a prince who must decided the fate of his own people . If there was medieval problem with even a black plague , people didn’t saw something really evil in idea of saving a millions on a cost of thousands I’m not trying to justifying genoside but we can understand all this better and not play a white knight from our point of view

Blizzard wright that’s if dreadlord could win over a number of zombie army, there are will be no way to end the Scorge, and yes Ashbringer didn’t exist at this period of time so Medivh was right, this land is doomed
