Nepal Sambat, a traditional lunar calendar, is deeply significant to the Newar community in Nepal. Established in 879 AD by the legendary merchant Shankhadhar Sakhwa, it symbolizes the liberation of Kathmandu’s citizens from debt, which he settled. In gratitude, the Newars adopted this calendar to commemorate their freedom.
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, Nepal Sambat’s new year coincides with “Mha Puja,” a Newari ritual focused on self-purification and empowerment. This day also aligns with the Newar celebration of “Nhu Daan Yaa Bhintuna,” a Diwali tradition wishing for good fortune and success in the year ahead.
