THE RINGS OF POWER is EH | Episode 1 & 2 Review
For a mere man to be described as God's Huntsman... few could be given as much righteous praise as Théoden, in fiction or in reality...
To think someone let Amazon ruin this mans world...oh thats right it was Tolkiens own relatives.
Simon Tolkien truly is a lesser son of greater sires...
@@the_tactician9858 Christopher was the last protector of his fathers legacy.
The movies are amazing but nothing can compare to this
Modern Marvel!
Well im fucking crying
Me too 😂😂😂
It's incredible how I cry every time with emotion
Tolkien is the father of modern medieval fantasy. Yet despite all the great works inspired (in some form or fashion) by his own works, I have yet to see someone write like Tolkien did. e.g. This one extremely well detailed and descriptive part from the video.
That portion of the speech where Tolkien speaks - "there came rolling over the fields a great.... boom" is a piece in itself. The very short, almost undetectable. pause before the "boom" really discloses how viscerally attached the author was to his drama. I'd wager he felt that "boom" in his heart. I read the books almost sixty years ago, but never in my wildest imagination would have thought to actually hear him.
I'm back. It's always too good. It's just so good.
This ACTUALLY hits the nail on the head with RoP 💯💯💯
@@edyoung44 thank you thank you
The eloquence. The Dignity. It is truly art
Indeed.
I want to hear him say give me the meat and give be it to me raw
Tolkien will always be worthy of praise. I don’t care what anyone says.
DEEEEEEAATH!
Yeah not bad not bad. But it’s no ‘do you know why a ship floats and stone does not.’
Lol I was thinking the same thing. 25 years later, biggest budget ever and ROP cant even come close to how good LOTR is. Their priorities were not in the script, costumes or good casting that's for sure.
Nothing comes close to this.
😂
@@johnwalker5622Their priorities were DEI and activism. Everything woke turns to ****.
Well, maybe if theoden had looked up instead of down, he wouldn't have sunk beneath his horse and died. Skill issue, clearly.
You think nothing can ever be more epic and powerful than the film version of the Ride of the Rohirrim. Then you hear the Original Text in the words of the Master himself.
For real. I got goosebumps listening to this.
I think the movie actually almost improved the original text. But they got Lucky, they casted the real King Theoden for the role
It’s honestly a toss up for me. They have different qualities and are both done flawlessly. Easily the best scene in both movie and book
@@wilhufftarkin8543 I get tears. And I bow my shoulders and back just a little, and tense up, preparing for battle.
the movie did it better, and justice.
Absurd statement
One’s a movie and one’s a book
I actually think you are right, I think the movie actually manage to improve on the book, but it's mainly because Bernard Hill fucking killed it in this scene. Not to say anything bad about the book, but this is just astounding cinema.
Idk I really love both. I love the inner dialogue and the imagery given in the book. But I love the music and Bernard hills voice and delivery. Really tough choice
The movie did it justice period.
"Too late was worse then never" I'm not expert and correct me, but that line is something a soldier could say.
No correction needed. That is a line that a soldier could say. He says it in this recording.
It would make some sense. J.R.R. Tolkien fought in World War One.
This is a reference to something Merry overhears Eomer say a few pages earlier in the chapter, when Eomer is reciting a old addage, "'Need brooks no delay, yet late is better than never'... And mayhap in this time shall the old saw be proved truer than ever before since men spoke with mouth."
@@richh.2803It's an old adage too, and Tolkien definitely pokes holes in it here. To him it's better (for you) not to come at all than live with knowing you arrived too late to help. Very anxiety producing and real.
I think its in reference to the battle of the somme in which tolkien fought.
lisn to this right after the scene ti understand what peter jackson took from the books. Rings of power f....g sucks ass
man, he def. was not a narrator ;) Quite a quick pace he got reading
Hard disagree.
People are just slow these days.
British upper class speaking cadence until today, but especially in the older days, has this stylized oddness of pacing and intonation. You can also hear that with recorded Churchill speeches. "We shall fight in the hills (etc...)" is a climax of his famous speech, an inspirational fanfare. But in the original recording, he sounds as if he had to perform it 3 times daily for 3 years and reached a point where he can't wait to get this part over with. Interestingly, this seems to be entirely an upper class thing. Almost like a performative laziness in speaking. Something Tolkien doesn't, but you can hear it a lot from modern british politicians (the upper class spawn. Boris Johnson does it quite agregiously), is this weird... slacking off of vowels. "We must restore ordeeeeairrrrrr." To my german ears, this sounds like the exact opposite of well cultured upper class speech. It sounds like someone who is going to be told to get his teeth apart while speaking by his teacher the next moment.
@@tomitiustritus6672 What you ascribe to laziness and consider "oddness of pacing and intonation" is probably the results of being highly educated and knowing most of the Classics in their original language. Although it's prose, Tolkien uses a good variety of metres. It gives his prose and his scansion a tremendous impact. Read aloud the Illiad in Greek and the Aeneid in Latin a few times. Then, read Shakespeare and Chaucer. Your German ears may still get a proper education.
@@horacelidenbrock3905 I'm sorry. "Read aloud the Illiad in Greek and the Aeneid in Latin"? The fuck? Native english--speakers cant even decide how to pronounce "lever" and you think anyone can actually speak Latin or Ancient Greek? Also love how you equate being german with being uneducated. Real classy, especially after completely misunderstanding tom's comment.
This makes it all the more an immutable fact that that abomination on Amazon that DARES to call itself The lord of ring:the rings of power is nothing but a life sucking parasite wearing the skin of Tolkiens works like the alien lifeform from John Carpenters: The Thing and thats all it will ever be. The showrunners/writers of that show are living in the shadow of a cockroach that is being graced by the light reflecting off the gleaming statue of Tolkiens greatness.
No worse than the parasitic pseudo-intellectuals who crow the party line, spreading hate like it's the hot new drug on the streets. Yes, the Rings of Power sucks, but people like you complaining about it every chance they get is much more irritating.
@@Cailus3542I don't agree. A devoted fan that's passioned about Tolkien work has every right to complain. People are just so aversed by critics these days. And that's in fact a sign that big media has brainwashed an entire generation to think down on being passionately critic.
@@Cailus3542Hate is an emotion like any other, and valid criticism is not hate.
still make my skin shivers. greatest writer in modern times. unmatched champion with a pen in his hand. true legend
We need mighty men like Tolkien and Theoden now more than ever
And Aragorn as well. Aragorn is a perfect example of a great and humble man, handling many situations with more grace than almost all people. Aragorn is who I try to model myself after and others should too.
Be the Tolkien, Theoden and Aragorn you want to see in the world. You cannot materialize hope, you must create it yourself, and share that fire with others.
@@michaelb8176 amen
I regularly read this and other passages from Tolkien to my young son for his bedtime story. He's currently 11 months old, I think by the time he turns 10 or so I'll be able to make it through without getting choked up.
❤
You won't. And that's a good thing.
"Even as Örome the Great in the Battle of the Valar" upgrades the scene to a whole new level. Rereading this chapter after having read the Silmallirion was a completely different experience.
"His golden shield was uncovered and lo! It shone like an image of the Sun and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed." 🤌🤌🤌🤌

Gave me chills..the way he read!!remarkable!!...
This might be my favorite passage in the entire trilogy (and there are so many damn good passages). I get chills every time I read about how “Theoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed…” So good!
This is wrong. Beth = Sonny
@@ColonelAngus2 that’s a good thought!
Tolkien survived WWI and lost several of his best friends and decided to do this with his life. Truly an amazing human being
Hearing / reading this once again, and although the scene gives me chills, it seems to me more emphasis could have been put in the movie on Theoden, riding in front of his host, his white horse galloping on a field of green and incarnating the banner of his house.
He was hauling ass and was an amazing leader of his people
Easily one of my favorite characters.
Marvelous.
Too many days had already flown when corlys said that 😂
@@bungle5899 lol. For real
I still know, reading this the 1st time- awesome! 🥹
This is art.
He was a giant, who made a world we can live on.
“They were too late. Too late was worse than never.” Might sound extra for saying this but I feel like a Catholic like Tolkien, especially one of his caliber as author, might have had an unease writing that. Knowing he was the god of this world and he was allowing this slaughter to happen was maybe exhilarating for him to write on paper. And it gave such fire and fuel to him lifting up the riders into victory word after word.
Can someone PLEASE make a GOOD AI version of Tolkien reading ALL of his material? I know this would have to be a paid project, but please make it happen ❤
@@gingerbaker_toad696 truth
Some folks have made AI renditions. Unfortunately AI can only recreate his voice timber, not his inflections, accent and pronunciation, so it sounds like a generic brit speaking, and what's more, it usually has trouble pronouncing words in his languages, so that's also a difficulty. I imagine we'll get there eventually though.
@@Pop_Culture_Podcast Is this AI? I'm going to call you a fucking retard for writing that comment in the hopes of getting your attention.
@@vaahtobileet No it's not.
Let the dead rest
Do horses trip over when they are hit with arrows? there are accounts during the napoleonic era which stated that when horses are hit with bullets, their heart was beating so fast that they are still charging after their chest was blown up
When you shoot a deer, it runs away, not because it's still alive, but because even though you might have decimated its heart and lungs, it has oxygenated blood in circulation still. It will keep running on autopilot until it has expended that energy. It's a bit like a coil or spring. The motion continues even after the source (e.g. your hand) has been removed. I can't really speak for horses, but they're really big animals, especially when bred for war. I imagine there's a similar phenomenon going on.
@@Infinite_Jester i guess that peter jackson didnt look that up
@user-qz9hc7rg7b Peter Jackson? More like Peter Hackson! He didn't look up horse facts and now Return of the King is literally unwatchable!
@@NPRoberto take it easy
Depends where the horse is hit. If it hits certain nerves, it could have that effect.
Theodan's last ride, and the death of the witch king of the nazgul is by far the best and most epic part of the entire trilogy. I can barely read it aloud without crying, and yet here the master does it so composed and eloquently! Truly the greatest of all time!
@@elevatormusicirelia9043 well said!
I agree, except that it's only one of the most powerful. Denethor's hatred of & then trying to kill Faramir - who was actually stronger & more noble than the favored Boromir - was heart-breaking. And Sam's final expressed determination to stay with Frodo all the way to the fires of Gondor was so heartrendingly beautiful. Truly, Tolkien was one of the most gifted storytellers the world has ever known
