The 1999 Honda Shadow ACE VT750 had sat for about a year. Unfortunately fuel was left in the tank that went bad and a little rust had built up. We use vinegar, baking soda, and WD40 to clean and protect the tank from further rusting. “Barn Bike Builds Theme” by Sebastian Dane. 1978 Suzuki GS550E - Part 1: Introduction
I'm buying my dad's 2004 Honda Shadow 750 ACE. Yesterday we moved it from his garage to mine so he could have more room for wood working in his garage. We hoped to get it started so he could just ride it to my house but it had sat in his garage for about 2 years. We did get it running but fuel was leaking from between the carburetors so we didn't let it idle long and ended up putting it on my trailer to get it to my house. I've done a little research and a long with talking with people I know found out it could be due to a stuck float causing one of the carbs to overload and leak fuel. I will definitely try this method of cleaning them without removing them. Dad did drain the old gas before I got there yesterday and said it was still a liquid and still smelled like gas.
I just pulled a pair of these carbs off and cleaned. The #40 pilot jets stop up easily..
I hope you did not have the pickup truck engine running while jumping the bike... Bike stator is rated at 12-13 amps and that trucks alternator is rated at about 130 amps.. You ll fry the electrical system on the bike..
Thank God for you!! I've been struggling with 2005 Honda shadow spirit.. I've been trying for days. I didn't use enough WD40. I'm glad to see it is possible to get that battery out.!! Thanks, man..
A true boy scout would not use a prepackaged fire starter. Maybe if you dropped some sawdust in a paper cup cake holder and poured some candle wax on it. Still cheating but we'd give you credit towards the merit badge. I really like the drum idea. They are well made too.
Anyone have any recommendations on how to paint this thing? I have the same one.....high temp paint, sanding before, etc...paint will not stick and stay very long.
Dude I want to see a full view of the finished product when it's dry preferably when when the bike is put together
Did the rustolium pucker after you added the 2k? I hear you have to let the color dry for several days.
Will this clean the jets? Bike day too long. It runs but not good and i feel like it's the jets. Already drained fuel and put new fuel in.
Hello! Thanks for the video! I'm a bit stuck with my bike and may try this tomorrow. I take it there wasn't any trouble in getting the carb cleaner to pass through the fuel pump in to the carbs? Do you think it would be possible to put the drain screws back in and put carb cleaner through the gas line like you did here and in theory soak the carbs overnight with cleaner? I've seen others try something like that with seafoam without removing the carbs then drain it. Thank you, I am not too handy with this kind of thing.
Someone get my man a new disc for that grinder!!
Thanks for the video..how many ah it's the battery?
I would like to buy your luggage rack back rest on your suzuki gs 550 e motorcycle.if you want to sell it,give me a reasonable price.thank you mark
How well did the paint match the color cap?
It matched pretty well. The color looked good but it didn’t hold up to time very well. It isn’t horrible looking just not like a “true” paint job. Would I do it again instead of paying for a professional job though? Absolutely!
Are there any more videos coming of this? I saw that this is the last one, I'm building one of these bikes myself but can't figure out some of the engine stuff. Mine turns over fine and all but there's stuff I don't know if I need or not, but it's a non starter from when I got it.
One can use a tiny wratchet wrench that accepts screwdriver bits.
Good advice.
Thank you so much! I was having this issue with my '03 and you just saved my ass.
I'm glad I was able to help you with the problem.
So what is the fuel pump on this bike for if there's a carburetor..?
The fuel pump (at least on mine) was behind the battery box in front of the rear tire. I don’t think it was relocated there but I’m unsure.
I was told it is just to get the fuel back up to the carbs because the gas tank outlet is lower than the fuel intake port on the carb. Thus the fuel pump is to fight gravity
Thank you very much for sharing. Got the same issue with my wifes bike and was unsure if its fixated anywhere else. You video saved me a whole lot on research and I was successful; highly appreciated.
You’re welcome. I’m glad it was able to help. I certainly had to do a lot of research to figure it out.
you know what is fun, substituting carb cleaner for starting fluid when you need to seat a stubborn car tire, it's quite exciting and it does an efficient job removing the hair from you arms, oh yeah and it's better if you don't do it in your living room if your married, wifes tend to get a little testy when they come home and find a throw rug with a potted plant covering a big burned spot right in the center of the living room, but if your single what's one more big black ring in the carpet.....
Yeah…luckily I didn’t burn anything to the ground.
When blowing through the fuel line back to the carb will the fuel pump restrict it from flowing back to the carb ?
I would disconnect the hose from the outflow port of the pump so the hose I'm using is now a straight shot to the carb. Because yes if u were blowing through the hose that comes straight from the tank to the pump, it would hit interference inside the pump without it running to cause suction on one side and outflow on the other.
thx, i needed that
You’re welcome. I definitely struggled to find the solution.
I gotta tell you , before i pulled the carbs i figured I'd try your "method" my new to me 05 shadow only sat for a few weeks. After running ok ? Anyway it seems to have worked, in the garage. Will try on road tomorrow. But thinks, its so much less work than pulling the carbs.
I’m glad it worked. It did for us as well for a while. The bike had sat long enough that we ended blowing more gunk up into the carbs. Unfortunately we had to pull the carbs anyway.
@@barnbikebuilds8657 i drained the gas tank , i had originally put in marvel mystery oil (great product, used for decades) and stabil. Maybe just to much "stuff" less gasoline. ?? Anyway i have 2. 250cc scooters gas and go. So its easy to let the shadow sit. Think it will be on Craigslist soon.
I see the post is over a year-and-a-half old, so not trying to hammer you here, just trying to help: the way vinegar works is soaking for 24 hours. So, find a pan that will hold enough vinegar in it that you can put your tank in it (flip it over so that it's top-side-down) and let it soak for 24 hours. You will have very little (if any) elbow work to do after that. I have a plastic pan that would be ideal for your project, so you can find them, they're out there, try Walmart. You shouldn't need more than a gallon for this task. Also, "flash rust" is what happens when you get the surface to bare metal; you can prevent that a few different ways. If you use vinegar INSIDE your gas tank to get the rust off, just rinse it out with water, then rinse the tank out with diesel; the diesel with leave a protective residue behind to keep flash rust from occurring. If you are wanting to prevent flash rust on the outside of the tank it will depend on what your next step is. If you are going for that patina look and you want the bare metal, then just spray silicone (or a silicone based spray polish, like Motul sells) on it and wipe off. If you are going to paint it, just go ahead and finish your prep work and drive on to the primer phase. Flash rust comes off pretty easy, so don't let that get to you. Hope your project went well.
That is great knowledge to obtain. Thank you so much. Like all projects I have they are in various stages of complete. I hope someone in need will see this comment prior to the work.
We've been doing this for years and even take one up to our Elk camps put a grate over it and get to grillin! I just found your channel.
It’s a good repurpose of things people just take to the junk yard.
@@barnbikebuilds8657 No doubt about that. I'm an old Hillbilly and repurpose everything I get a need for before I'll go buy something store bought.
We physically have a pile of stuff. At least once a week we have the conversation “I’ll go look if we have something that can do that.”
I cut out the mixer all together and it helps with clean out and I built legs for it to stand on and it puts out tremendous amounts of heat. No smoke and tons of heat
Plus it gets in the way when you try to burn.
I learned.. just put a fire in the drum.. the ring will fall off in 2 minutes
Good call. I plan to do this project again improving it.
You did great 👍
Thank you.
How to buy this bike? I’m from Sri lanka
Although I haven't made much progress on it as of late it isn't for sale. But thank you for your interest.
Love this! Looks very nice 👏
Thank you. It’s a fun project and looks even better in person.
What kind of wood did you use for the shiplap and what are the dimensions of the pattern? Do you plan on putting moulding around the door and windows? I like how simple you both made the German schmear and shiplap process! Good job!
Thank you for the kind words. The ship lap was the cheapest we could source. We found a local discount wholesaler with some damaged stock so we got them for $4.25 a board. It took about 40 boards. They were 10’ x 6”. We did put moulding up. We took repurposed pallet wood to trim it all out. We will be starting on the ceiling in a few weeks. Still working out our plan on that.
Great low tech fix. Thanks.
Absolutely. When I have something to share I try to pass it on so others can learn from it.
2 things I noticed watching this video the job probably would have gone quicker if you change the cut off wheel also if in the future you plan to use the cut off wheel you might want to invest and a pair of safety glass and more clothing to protect your skin from hot pieces of metal that come flying off whatever you're cutting. A few dollars and proper PPE will be well worth it instead of spending hundreds of dollars on doctor's bills or having eye surgery
Thank you so much for the advice. And I completely agree about the safety. Truthfully...even my family harasses me about this. I get excited to do a project and dive in. Often times forgetting to consider the safety and intelligence behind my actions.
I have the same problem with that I usually jump into projects myself but little angel on my shoulder tells me to stop and get safety glasses it's either that or remember how much the eye doctor's bill was! I enjoy watching your videos and continue to see your future projects.
A little caution up front could definitely prevent a life altering injury. I intend to heed this advice.
I’m the same exact way with ear protection. I get so excited and into my project next thing you know I’ve been using the grinder for two hours and my ears are ringing for a week
I’m hard of hearing so it’s even more important I should protect my ears. I rarely do.
I love the color!
Thank you. I spent a long time considering colors and paint brands.
Thanks i needed that
You’re welcome. I figured I’d share the discovery.
Did the mystery oil work
Unfortunately it did not. It had sat for over a decade and the engine is really locked up. I have seen people have success with this method it just didn’t work for me. I intend to tear the engine down completely and rebuild it. Just haven’t quite got to it yet.
Barn Bike Builds well great video I surscribe to your channel
Great. What content on the channel would you like to see more of?
Barn Bike Builds believe it or not the mmo worked for me
How long had your engine been locked up? What bike do you have?
Nice to hear it run for a little bit
Now the battle is to keep it running!
nice video!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Black the bike out😂
You’re thinking no splashes of color anywhere?
Barn Bike Builds I think all black would look stealthy. But maybe a splash of red, white, yellow, or blue would be cool
I was thinking small amounts of red. I also like the existing chrome. So I’ve got some planning to do.
Looks like he has dropped off a few of those.
It was routine day for him.
Great video!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
The blue color looks awesome
Thank you. We were unsure how the color would come out but were pleasantly surprised.
Keep up the good work!
Absolutely will. Thank you for watching.
Nice work. It will be beautiful by the time you finish!
Thank you. I’ve got lofty plans for it.
Can’t wait to see once this thing is painted
I’ve nicknamed the bike THE DRONE so I’m thinking a Transformers Bumblebee theme.
Barn Bike Builds That’ll look really cool
