Bach's Etching Technique
Calligraphing, etching & printing The Art of the Fugue BWV 1080, the Riddle of the Unfinished 14th Fugue solved. I walk with seven-league boots through the Bach literature, special mention here for Ruth Tatlow's Bach's Numbers, and supplement it with the practical knowledge of a draughtsman, calligrapher and etcher.
There are 24 pieces in Die Kunst der Fuga, and this video is 24 minutes long, although the visual counterpoint of the last minute is incomplete, stuck at 41 seconds: it is up to the viewer to finish it.

The opening Adagio of Bach's solo violin music is complex to play and notate. This is a real speed recording, Bach may have done it twice as fast.     At 17:10, you say 41 is the numerical equivalent of J S B a c h. J = 10, S = 19, B = 2, A = 1, C = 3 and H = 8. But 10 + 19 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 8 = 43. I must be missing something. Could you put me right?

      The letters i and j were equated in Latin and German, as were the letters u and v. The alphabet thus had 24 letters. The Art of the Fugue consists of 24 parts, see the list in the caption. Kabbalah connects creative power to language: let there be light. The video lasts an incomplete 24 minutes as a tribute.

    Hello, my friend. Thank you for the video. I'm 26 and very new to Bach and would like some guidance. The only piece I have listened to is BWV 227 and it's the only time where the first two notes of a work made me cry. Where do I start with his work? Should I begin with his greatest/most important pieces? If so, I'd be very grateful to know what they are. If we're talking about preferences, I love slower pieces. I much prefer asking somebody like yourself instead of just doing a Google search because it feels much more personal. Thank you again. Nazeem.

    At 1.5x-speed it seemed like a likely tempo for a man transcribing his own music to paper from a sketch. Painstaking work in an age before reproduction, and the only means of transmitting music until enough interest for the even more monumental task of engraving printing plates of expensive copper. In the Neopolitan conservatories young students would spend several years singing and writing down exercises in counterpoint before they learned the keyboard. To hear the music in their heads before having it in their fingers. Now the keyboard comes first, and composition and theory waits for college...or later. And improvisation suffers. In a time when paper is soo-inexpensive, it has little value in music education. I firmly believe one learns best through the finger-tips; taking notes, making sketches, transcribing.

      There is a vast amount of Bach literature about this topic in which you can be dragged as in a rabbit hole. In the video a few metaphors are stacked to get more solid ground under one's feet. The running numbers of the Matrix movie are a scrambled version of Sushi recipes. We follow Bach's cookbook in various stages of composition. Rather than a perfect floor plan in advance, there seems to be a gradual adjustment and design. Through humanism, the techniques of Kabbalah had entered the recipes. Fear of missing out can perhaps be put into perspective because we recognize Bach's music as his own, as well as an experience of heavenly harmony, without deciphering. Decoding usually ends with the kind of information one can find in lexicon entries concerning his biography (his name) and the stories considered at the time meaningful for understanding the world.

    How would you recommend working out the number of measure that should be in each system?

    • @joostwitte5546
      @joostwitte5546 2 месяца назад

      In Bach's scores notes are more or less regularly spaced. System endings are usually broken at quarter note level, sometimes with an increase in density, sometimes with a small empty space - possibly filled with announcing notes of the following system. Bach does not work from an example but from memory and makes an estimate for an equivalent entire page filling, which he regularly adjusts. The end result has fluctuations that can usually be optimized, without measure breaks, starting new episodes on a new system, and a regular page fill for more similar grayscale values. To do this I use a digital note program for a sketch, without aiming to achieve an ultimate solution, it is just one of many. Digital note programs each have their own pre-programmed division within a measure, which differs from Bach's flow. There I follow Bach's example, with minor adjustments if notes are being crowded out.

      I buy my paper from Vliegerpapier in Amsterdam, they have a website, but the hemp paper is not listed there.

    I love this channel, if only people nowadays appreciated the time and effort it takes to write music on paper directly from one's mind! Bach's musical prowess is apparent not only in the raw musical product, his talent is reflected even through his calligraphy more than we think. Great video Joost!
