The Balrogs in the original story were closer to the stature of orcs. They were not what they would become later on. In canon, only Ecthelion, Glorfindal and Gandalf slew Balrogs and none of those survived the fight.

You have to keep in mind here that the Ring was fundamentally evil by nature. I think it would have had a choice in the matter, and would have leaned toward Sauron. And besides, according to Gandalf himself, he himself would have wound up going dark if he'd held the Ring. Anyone would. So it hardly matters.

  • @jonrwert

I wonder if we could take Tolkien's earlier drafts about Balrogs to assume that they existed on a size/strength scale too, like Orcs, Dragons, etc. Gothmog and Durin's Bane might be some of the largest, scariest ones, but perhaps the average was like half their size. Otherwise, if they are all roughly equal in their powers as Maiar, I prefer Tolkien's later drafts where only a handful of examples of encountering and defeating Balrogs exist.

The written forms of Sindarin just look like old Irish script 'Cló Gaelach'. We still use it for street signs shops plaques and monuments but mostly in the country not in Dublin though you will still see it in some places. And nobody uses it to write anymore! The invention and emergence of printing-press forced Cló Gaelach out of use as even newspapers printing in the Irish language was printed in a anglosized characterisation!

The writers may have been limited to what they could cover--the appendices of "The Lord of the Rings," right?--so they should have stuck to that instead of trying to talk about events more fully covered in other books to which they do not have rights. For example, the early Third Age is covered pretty much only in the LotR appendices and nowhere else. We could have had great stories about the split of the kingdom of Arnor into the three kingdoms of Cardolan, Rhudaur, and Arthedain, and how each kingdom successively fell. We could have had the background of the Witch-king of Angmar and maybe even allusions to the beginnings of the Barrow-wights. Possibly the Old Forest at its height with Ents, Old Man Willow, and even Tom Bombadil and Goldberry! Instead, they chose to try to tell stories to which they did not have rights and twist existing lore to do it. With a $1 BILLION budget, did they not we been consult with Tolkien fans who knew the lore?!

Great that you make this video about Legolas. Two complaints. Firstly, including things from the films that never happened “in reality”. For example, the attack by the wargs on the group heading for Helm’s Deep. Secondly, I think you focus too much on Lego lass as the warrior. Of course he was skilled with the bow and arrow (he’s had a lot of time to practice!) And he had the bow of Galadriel. I was disappointed that you did not mention his ability to be both light-hearted, and to grieve. Some of the scenes, following the death of Gandalf, and indeed the death of Boromir were very moving.
