Just read the first half of the 2nd book and it’s a bummer. There was so much opportunity to continue the story through vaelin only… 2nd book feels like from another author to be honest. Apart from the names, the story and the world it has absolutely nothing to with the first book. Imagine you‘re an ac‘dc fan and they release a new album, it’s called high voltage 2, but it’s country music and every song is featuring a different singer ( from Ariana Grande to Eminem ) That’s the feeling the 2nd book gives.

    • @SteveTalksBooks

Completely understand how you're feeling with the second book. After the first one set the bar so high it's tough not getting anything close to what you were expecting with the second one. Did you finish the series?

    • @johnasweydlnk5313
      @johnasweydlnk5313 3 дня назад

@@SteveTalksBooks No, I didn’t finish even the 2nd book. However, I am giving Anthony Ryan one more chance; today I will start the Pariah. And I don’t think it has to do with how high the bar was, Anthony has simply made too big a leap stylistically. If it had been a new series or a stand-alone work by him, it could have worked. As it is, however, it's simply a poor piece of workmanship, and I'm also disappointed in the publisher - they should have intervened.

Too bad about Name of the Wind. I haven't read it yet, but it is well regarded, so I may give it a go at some point. I've never been very successful at journaling. Good for you! I wish I had dnf’ed the Name of the most boring fantasy book I’ve ever read. But I really dislike school settings and I didn't know that was a main part of the book. I kept waiting for him to be on his way out in the world getting famous for various adventures and that just didn't happen. So that's why it didn't land very well with me. I too feel the need of density and complexity in my fantasy reads. The pay off always feels so high for those kind of books. But I also have very low stamina when it comes to them. I read them for forever it seems and I feel so exhilarated, accomplished and oh so burned out afterwards 😅🔥

I'm glad I'm not alone! It didn't take long for me to wonder what all the fuss is about with that one. It felt very cozy, a little too cozy. What is your favorite dense fantasy book or series? And yes, finishing feels so good but it takes a mental toll sometimes haha

@@SteveTalksBooks my favorite fantasy series so far that hasn’t been matched is A Song of Ice and Fire. I find G.R.R.M.’s writing in that series to be transfixing. His way with words and his worldbuilding is outstanding to me. I can not fathom how one single human being can create a world or characters like that. But I do have some heavy titles on my TBR that I hope can compete with him. Malazan for example, although I feel intimidated reading something I’m expecting to go over my head as I’m reading it. I’m not a re-reader so if it goes over my head I’ll never experience the “Aha!”-moment 🤷🏻‍♀️ What's your favorite dense fantasy book or series?

I know I have read and enjoyed it but I also have to admit that I remember barely anything from it, didn't leave much of an impact lol. Anyway, hope you get over the book hangover asap! As for your question... on the one hand I would like to unplug a bit more, but at the same time I also think social media and my online friendships are hugely beneficial to my mental health since I have no real deep connections in real life (since I lost all of those due to mental health struggles). And with the whole kindle debacle of not owning the books you buy, I think I prefer to just ignore that fact hahah. With audible it's the same, but I know if you use LibroFM you actually get to download the files and they are yours so the audiobook can't be taken away from you. Interesting food for thought to reflect on! Hope you have a great week, Steve ☺

Glad to be a part of the small group on the forum! Highly recommended haha And for your question, I doubt I would ever go back to a dedicated iPod-like device. That being said, although I'm somewhat of a minimalist, I listen to vinyl at home...so it's not all through an app. Also, I listen to most of my digital music on RUclips Music, which is bundled with RUclips Premium. Really enjoy that service and has all the songs that Spotify has, and the no ads on RUclips are great for viewing long-form content I enjoy. Overall, I am all about finding a balance, I don't favor one extreme over the other when it comes to digital media, and I think anyone can use their phone in a way that requires more self-control to not be controlled by algorithms, apps, or just scrolling in general.

I finished this series nearly 2 years ago and had multiple re-reads and fine picked all the major conversations and revelations and still have more questions then answers. However I believe everyone underestimates kellhus. Everything in aspect emperor you have to look at why would kellhus want what’s happens to happen. 5D chess. Also in the appendices: under ‘The decapitant’ it tells a short story of after shimeh on the travel back to the empire at mangecca kellhus is seen swapping heads with the decapitants and talking to himself… We learn between the 2 series Iyokus becomes kellhus second teacher; he spends 20 years using the daimos to access the outside. Kellhus knew Ajoklis plan; I believe kellhus knew about Kelmomas all along aswell. Enjoy racking your brains around that ending and hoping Bakker will finally release The No God or this ending will haunt us forever 🤣

To send you further down the rabbit hole: Why is esmenet the only one who can carry kellhus children? Seswatha was sleeping with nah-cayautis mother…. Is seswatha the reason anecerimbors are special? Was mimara pregnant before she went to see achamian?… Kellhus says to esmenet he is doing all this to take the sin from everyone else onto himself… why? Why did kellhus want mimara and achamian reach ishual? Did kellhus use sorweel to change serwa? We learn from the cishaurim in great ordeal they knew about the outside and the gods etc… so did moenghus know all along? When the survivor takes ciri he has a revelation then.. kills himself? Why? We learn the consult was influencing the religion (the tusk) so is what we know about anything to do with religion in the story factual or lies from the consult? When magic is used the language is referred to as the language of god… why would they been damned for that? Chorae (tear of god?)… does death from chorae have any difference to a normal death? How does that affect you on the outside? Why was there no explanation about the skin spy with a soul maithanet finds in thousandfold thought? Finally why would proyas’ death save a millions of lives?… 🐇 🕳

The sequels didnt live up to the first for many reasons but most important to me was the fact that Vaelin became a sub plot character devoid of action. In place of Vaelin we got Frentis and Reva. Almost as if Vaelin fractured and split between the 3. But Vaelin was supposed to be our hero. That's not to say the books weren't captivating but no matter how good we can't help but feel short changed after getting such a fantastic introduction to the series

do you still use the procaster? cause the audio sound's soo nice( I don't read book's no more)( just like the audio of your mic your voice is nice with it) and do you have any post processing done to it?

Still using the Procaster, I upgraded to a RodeCaster Duo that I'm happy with. I use Riverside to record audio with individual tracks so now I rarely touch my track other than normalize the audio levels. I have more details on our forum if that would help!

I really liked the writing, flowed very well. The last part of the book just fell apart and focused on the sex too much making it very repetitive, not to mention all the missed opportunities with the story itself. If cornered I would say it felt like it ended too soon, like right before act 3. The thing that was in the house at the end should have been resolved instead of treated as a throw away. In the end I didn't really connect with any of the characters, either. I feel like I was supposed to be scared at first with all the teenage death but it was treated so cavalier that it had no real sense of impact on the community, at all. Overall it started bleak, and in the end it was bleak. No real character development, other than Tylers decent. Reading this book I was just waiting for something interesting to happen and in a few instances there was but overall it didn't work for me. I got the sense that the author felt he reached some sort of fever pitch in the middle of the story and then took forever to explain what happened afterward. Then the Villain is revealed at the end and nothing happens with it. I did like the references and the style he chose.

I can see why you'd feel that way after reading it. The characters weren't that well developed, and the cabin portion did feel rushed.

Blue yeti has a more natural voice colour, but the background is more noticeable, but this can be additionally removed via Software or filters.

Now that I've been using the Procaster for a while I can't go back to the Yeti. But you're right about the audio being cleaned up with some editing.

Vague question for Steve. There is a grammatical... inconsistency regarding one of the pov's that I don't think has been mentioned. Have always wondered if this was a issue for not having an editor or what thematic it might serve.

Thanks, everyone! Closing on the evolving meaning of the title was a nice touch and both aspects were explained well. I remember being struck by that on my first read and how it solidified my terror at Janny's disdain for fucking around.

For whatever it's worth, my copies of the editions with the white covers have not held up physically. Stormed Fortress is just a stack of loose sheets wrapped in the covers at this point. The other editions, where the drawings take up far more space, have held up much better despite being reread more often than later volumes like Stormed Fortress.

Janny Wurts inhabiting the mad wizard in the woods trope with some of her prompts. Love it and deeply appreciate her online presence, which she has maintained prior to the internet becoming omnipresent. Here's hoping she reaps the rewards of this long overdue recent revival of interest in her work.

This was nourishing. Huge thanks to Janny Wurts for participating! And thank you to everyone for putting it together. I've been reading this series for decades and am preparing to reread from book one now that book eleven is available. I'm thrilled to see the interest on book tube from newer readers. It's unfortunate that this video hasn't garnered more engagement, as Wurts richly deserves a much wider readership. Thank you!
