12/18/1998 Stephen Abas (Fresno State) vs Eric Guerrero (Oklahoma State)
Oklahoma State visits Fresno State December 18, 1998. Stephen Abas, then ranked number 2 in the nation at 126 following a 4th place finish the prior year at 118lbs and coming off of a Junior World title, bumped up to 133 to wrestle fellow Californian, 2x returning National Champion Senior Eric Guerrero.
A legendary match from two 3x NCAA Champions and 2004 Olympic teammates.
Here is an interview of Eric talking about the match many years later

It’s sick that I got Abas as one of my coaches
I saw the match in person. And yes Abas gave up 8 lbs. He made weight that day for 125 lbs. Guerrero did not realize that he was going to wrestle Abas that day until Abas did not step on the mat for the 125 lb match and he look across the mat and realize Abas was warming up for him. Great match.
Epic battle between two 3x state champs and NCAA champs & Olympians 💪🏾👍🏾💪🏾
I heard about this story. Glad I get to see it. These guys are legends.
It would have been great if Spencer Lee had bumped up to wrestle RBY of Penn State in 2023.. Sigh😕.... But that didn't happen...And we were deprived of a great match....
Adam warned you about that skull of his.
Abas is my coach
Thank you for sharing this
This is like watching two healthy cats tangle with each other.
Wrestled the same time as these two champs at state and they were awesome technicians. Both world class wrestlers!!!
I was there!!!
These dudes would still be good in today's era and you can't say that about a lot of guys.
In his Prime, Stephen vs Spencer lee Would a been fire 🔥
@@wolfwoof1870 It really would be. It'd really be a contrast in styles though! Abas was as good as any '18/'25 on his feet whereas Lee was as dominant as I can recall on top. It'd be one of those matchup's where I can see Lee getting a 16-4 major and then coming back and losing 11-4, giving up 5 TDs and a RT. I think you had to gameplan vs Lee more than Abas...but even with his upset loss to Ramos, two best lightweights I've ever seen(meaning...at the lightest weights).
@@wolfwoof1870 Abas eats him alive.

@@KQwest98Abas would take gas Lee repeatedly taking him down.
Nani?????? The famous match was recorded!
Also I did a quick search and both were NCAA champions for this season,
Yup. Stephen won his first of three and Eric won his final of three.
Man, two of the best Cali HS wrestlers of the 90’s (and college as well, heck both are great with Stephen having slight edge due to winning silver at olympics)
Eric got lucky
Thank you for the Post. Good match
Godsend for posting this... thanks!
6 national titles between these 2 guys by the end of their careers.
Looks like Guerrero had the the Yeazy version of the Adidas
Guerrero with the smooth Kendall Cross Adidas on.
I had abas as a sub today
Great video! Thanks for posting. I’d like to see some of the blanco bros and mark munoz at cif state all bests!
Man, the Blanco brothers were monsters!
@@JASONCFFC no kidding Carlos beat Eric Guerrero's training partner his junior year a defending state champion. Have a good season coach or half a season 😉😷
@@vidreoo I know he won by TF in the state finals one year.
I'm not sure why Abas let him go without trying to get some riding time or at least try to turn him.
Strategically that may have been his only mistake even for a 30 seconds. But other than that excellent match between two great wrestlers
Jack Schwartz you’re probably right but realistically, I don’t think Stephen would be able to ride Eric for very long. Also, I think he also did it out of showmanship b/c he’s known for his uncanny takedown ability.
Abas didn’t want to risk 2 Guerrero the better bottom wrestler of the 2
Lets keep in mind that Abas gave up 10lb for this match.
@@kingalphadogg nah he didn’t give up anything, he just didn’t cut weight lol
