Hi, Thanks for watching! We rented the bikes from Onomichi (Onomichi Port Bicycle Rental Terminal 尾道港レンタサイクル). I highly recommend you reserve the bikes in advance, you can send them an email to do so. We arrived in Onomichi the day before by train. Stayed in Hotel Beacon Onomichi (they were kind enough to store our luggage for the 3 days we were gone). To start the cycling route you’ll need to take the ferry ( next to the bike rental ) for about 10 minutes and then start biking from Mukaishima. The biking route is marketed with a blue line on the ground and all you have to do is follow it 😊 Hope this helps!

Great bicycle route and can’t wait to do it. I have skied in Hakuba and Hokkaido, but this bike path is next. Hope it inspires you to get into riding and touring. You were smart to just take it slow and enjoy! We pound out miles of dirt riding and go completely unsupported through the wilderness of Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon. It is hard riding and you have your tent, food and everything you need packed on your bike. I like the sufferfest! But hotels, sweets and sushi don’t look too bad at all. From the Teton Valley.

Hi, Thank you so much for your sweet comment. Planning a trip to Japan is so exciting! I hope you have an amazing time there (it’s hard not to). Actually I (Hind) started leaning how to bike a month prior specifically for this trip! I had only biked a handful of times before the journey. So it’s entirely doable and was one of the most precious adventures I’ve ever done! I also recommend renting a bike and touring lake Yamanaka if you’re visiting the Fuji region, it’s beautiful and a nice way to prepare yourself for shimanami kaido. Hope you enjoy Japan 🫶🏼

Thank you for the lovely comment! I (Hind) started learning how to bike a month prior to the trip and had only biked a handful of times before starting the journey. Given that I wasn’t sure how it would go, we gave ourselves 3 days and it was plenty! We mainly biked only in the morning and had the entire afternoon to relax, read and enjoy the small towns. We even decided to take a longer route the last day to explore a bit more. So if you’re comfortable biking I’d say 2 days is perfect. Overall it was truly one of the most rewarding adventures I’ve been on and ever since I’ve been looking forward to doing more multi day bike trips! I really hope you get to experience something like this! It’s completely doable and totally worth it 😊

Japan's original country name NIPPON means "country under the sun," but the traditional name of the country when the capital was here in Nara was YAMATO (WA). YAMATO means "land of great harmony between people and nature.“ For about 1,300 years since the Emperor established the capital of Japan in Nara, deer have been traditionally cherished as messengers of the sacred gods of this island nation blessed with nature, until the present day. Deer do not live in Nara Park all day, nor do they appear to be kept in captivity. They are wild deer. At night, the deer return to the mountains to sleep. During the day, they come down to the park to feed and relax. Their daily rotation seems to be like that. They are regarded as sacred animals, messengers of the gods, because of a legend that when one of the four gods enshrined at Kasuga Taisya Shrine moved from the shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture to the land of Yamato (Nara), the deer protected and led the god along the way and brought him to this place. For 1,300 years, people have been told not to bully the deer, the messengers of the gods. The deer know that humans think so from generation to generation, so even though the city has changed its appearance, the deer still feel safe and comfortable living here. The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the JOMON pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.) Surrounded on all sides by the sea and geographically isolated from the Eurasian continent in the Pacific Ocean, this island nation has a warm and humid climate and is blessed with abundant underground clear water resources, diverse vegetation, and fishery resources. For this reason, people have lived here for tens of thousands of years, enjoying nature and living in peace with it. However, while the natural environment of this island nation is rich, it is also harsh, with both light and dark sides. Since ancient times, the people of this land have lived in peace by respecting human harmony and working together as a group, and have shared and enjoyed the blessings of nature by overcoming many harsh and severe natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and typhoons by sharing wisdom and working together as a group. This is because this island nation has a harsh natural environment that cannot be overcome by the power of one individual. The ancient Japanese name of the country, "YAMATO" or "WA" (great harmony between people and nature)、 represents the desire and reality of people trying to survive in the unique natural environment of an island nation, which is different from the dry and stable land of the Eurasian continent. And it is in this ancient Japanese country name that the essence of Japanese culture and the source and secret of the emergence of a unique Japanese culture different from the cultures of other Asian countries on the continent are hidden.
