FVC Ladder Install (complications) but Crossbar Fix Works
In this video, we wrap up the roof rack project on our Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A by adding the Flatline Van Company (FVC) Promaster side ladder to our roof rack. We encounter some complications and have recommendations based on our experience. We also successfully implement a solution to the issue with the roof rack crossbar hitting the air conditioner on this particular vehicle. Lastly, we successfully swap out our bent faring for a replacement provided by FVC.

    Thank you for this video! A roof rack wasn’t really in my plans, but I do need to add some solar capacity to my Pocket. Will I need a roof rack to accomplish that? When you mentioned Zamp, I went to see what was available on their website, and bumped into their Labor Day sale. I ended up buying the 45W portable panel at a nice discount. It even fits perfectly under the rear half of the bed frame in the Pocket. This is a better solution for me than more panels on the roof, because the portable panel can be in the sun while the van is in the shade. You saved me a bunch of money!

      Hello! Thank you for the feedback, we really appreciate it! Glad this video helped guide you to a solution to adding some extra charging capacity. If you ordered from Zamp, everything should be compatible with the Solis Pocket but just be aware of potential polarity mismatch if the connectors are not the same. We did a video about that too ruclips.net/video/1-1KzfagOII/видео.html . Good luck

    Enjoyed learning about the FVC Roof Rack and installation. There is another company, Orion Van Gear, the makes a roof rack specifically for the Solis Pocket 36a. Curious if you considered that one and if so why choose the FVC. I'm interested in adding a roof rack to my pocket and I've been comparing the two but undecided at this point. Thanks for all the great pocket videos. I've picked up quite a few nice tips from you guys.

      @Outapkt 6 дней назад

      Hello! We did consider that Orion rack which I think I mention at some point in the video. We chose the FVC rack because we liked the look of it more (less of a full surround) and it was more cost effective. Also, I think we have a solution for that rear crossbar which I hope to cover in our next video. Thanks for the feedback and good luck with your rack purchase!

    I'm glad I have the PX with the pop-up so that I can never, ever, ever be tempted to install an awning! But I do hope that works out for you. I've ordered the Aluminess rear ladder and spare tire carrier for mine, and am anticipating that install to be a real project! I'm tempted to record that process for a video but haven't decided yet. The lack of a full spare worries me and that has been the priority.

      I think we will enjoy the awning... It was a little complicated but manageable. We're also thinking about the spare tire situation, it seems we can install it under the body in the factory location with a little work. Maybe a future video there. We don't want to lengthen our van further with a back tire holder. Thanks for watching and for the comments!

    Nice teamwork and install. You know it's done correctly when you do it yourself. I have the same awning on my Trailmanor. Remember that the Auxiliary Zamp Solar Panels with the SAE connectors are reverse Polarity to shield the Positive terminal. The Zamp receiver plug is wired to accommodate that. Winnebago uses the Zamp SAE connector for Auxiliary Panels and is wired accordingly. Anytime you plug an Auxiliary Zamp Panel into anything other than a Winnebago you will need a Polarity Reverser. Anytime I plug anything other than a Zamp Panel into a Winnebago I will need a Polarity Reverser. I always keep 5 or 6 of those Reverse Polarity adapters in my tool kit. My Zamp 140watt Unregulated Deployable Solar Panel is rated at 7.8amps and is regulated by my on board Zamp Controller. On a good day I can get 40-50 amps total out of just my Portable Zamp Panel.

    I'm considering a Solis, and I'm appalled at how you were treated by their lack of service, requiring you to do all of the trouble shooting and them resisting your findings until they finally gave in and sent you a new cable. Furthermore, they apparently don't even bother to label the rear solar plug with + and - or Pos Neg to indicate which port is which.... requiring you to meter the plug to insure proper conductivity. They just kit bashed that solar plug with a cheap part and left it at that! Add to that, their lack of proper documentation. Come on! Just how many users do they expect to have an OHM meter with test leads to trouble shoot stuff that users should not have to trouble shoot when supplied properly in the first place! Where's their QA to test out EACH and every component that customers purchase from them? Maybe if they had such a QA Department, their vans could be sold with a QA label that reads "100% fully tested at time of assembly and shipment for your safety and assurance on the road. Enjoy your camper with full confidence! Thank you. The Management." I have no doubt that you paid top dollar for this rig, that would warrant such a QA label. A pity. Now my own purchasing choice survey has some red flags next to Solis. These campers are high ticket items for some of us, and we will do our Due Diligence with reviews provided by other owners. Solis... GET WITH IT! Thank you, OUTAPocket for posting this most informative video. I hope everything works out for you and your camper from now on. Safe travels, friend!

      Hello! Thanks for sharing your perspectives! Our experience seems pretty standard for Solis owners, maybe not even that bad by comparison with some stories I have heard. The Pocket is a great van for our needs, despite these issues, which are a little disappointing. This van is a bit lower on the price scale than many others so there are compromises, and fortunately we have the time and skill to do some investigation when issues come up. We did buy from an out of state dealer (1000 miles away) which also added some risk. Glad you found our information useful and thank you for watching. Good luck in your search!

    One last thought. Many don't realize that to charge the pocket house battery the main switch (above the fridge) needs to be ON when driving and ON when plugged into shore power. The battery gets no charge in the off position even when there is "power" from driving or shore plug. Winnebago recommends to basically keep that switch ON all the time while in use. Otherwise the battery will not get a full charge and will drain over time needing replacement.

    Yep - just went out and checked my pocket Zamp panel - it's been rainy and cloudy for 3 days in Virginia - off and in sun but no direct sun - and my battery is completely charged. When I push the amp/volt button I get 13.6v, 0.1A, and 0.2Ah. I have an AGM battery. If you push the battery type button you can cycle through 6 different "modes" battery types. Are you synced properly? Really all of this is above my pay grade - I really don't know much except for reading my Zamp manuals a while back - but it sounds like different issue as I have had my pocket for 2 years and never really thought I needed any more solar. I do not do any boondocking - but like I said previously I have run my fridge and other stuff for weeks without any issues and without even driving the van. Hope this helps a bit - one pocketeer to another.

      No worries... thanks for the additional info. I honestly think it is more running MaxxAir 12 hours a day for 5 days in 90+ degree weather that started dropping the battery, not as much the fridge. But in any case I'll keep my eye on it and good luck.

  • @booburroughs6793
    @booburroughs6793 Месяц назад

    You might want to call Zamp and talk to them about your system. I have a pocket and have run my fridge for 2 weeks straight with no issues - plus my Max fan - main lights on and off as needed. Do you have a battery issue? A wiring issue? It doesn't seem like a solar panel issue or lack of solar power - I live in Virginia so same type of "environment". I haven't had any need to get additional panels as the standard installed panel on my pocket handles things great.

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt Месяц назад

      Hi! Thanks for watching... The issue was we had the Pocket parked in the shade for 5 days. We were not staying in it, but it was very hot so we were running the maxxair every day to keep the interior cool plus the fridge. So there was minimal re-charging going on for those 5 days. Thus when we went riding I parked in the sun and wanted to maximize our re-charge rate for those few hours. The system itself seems fine... it simply wasn't recharging when parked out of the sunlight for so long, that's all. Thanks and take care.

      You are not wrong! Reality, once you have the van, is that is can be quite a bit of trouble to have the issues dealt with under warranty. It has been faster, easier, and better to just deal with it ourselves. Our experience has not been unusual from what others have told us. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

    You guys have so much respect for one another 😝..she waits until he finish then you start and same goes for him I love that .. as far as the RV it is my next purchase for sure the A makes more sense than the B too much wasted space for another sink in the back which y won’t use

    Great video. I am looking at purchasing a pocket within the year or so. At least the pocket is on the top of my list. I am also looking for a small footprint so I can also drive it around during the day and will fit in a standard parking spot. So, looking forward for more updates and will check out your past videos too. Have fun.

      Great, thanks for the feedback! Despite the issues we cover in this and other videos, we love the van. The layout is perfect and the van is exactly the size we wanted. Getting bikes inside is awesome for us and I feel the price vs value with this van is spot on. Good luck and look forward to more discussions!

    Nice video! Glad you got the issue sorted out. This is somethingnwe learned about warranty issues, I had to fight a litttle to have my batteries covered under warranty, by the time our service appointment came around, the 12 months had passed. My dealer is 150 miles away. Now i have a local RV service shop i will go to. But I'm finding out that its always best to get educated a little more so we can atleast now what the problem is!

    the reason it tripped your yeti is due to short cycling the compressor as the capacitor did not have enough time to recharge so it had to pull what it needed from your source. this is not only bad for the electronics in the a/c unit but also the compressor.

    Thanks for the video, I've been looking at this one Pulsar GD400BN for our Pocket. I'm wondering if you checked out Pulsar and if so why you chose Westinghouse.

    • @Outapkt

      Thanks for your comment. I was actually very close to buying that generator. It seems to have more power in the same size/weight package and has all the features I was looking for. In the end it was a brand I was less familiar with and decided maybe that much power was overkill for what I needed. I would be very curious to compare the two in the real world. Maybe it would run the same load quieter than the Westinghouse. I also wonder how fuel consumption would compare. I think it is a good choice for the Pocket. If you get it, post your experience back!

    My Honda eu 3000 is ,is much quieter.

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Yes I bet it is. It also looks like it weighs twice as much and is quite a bit larger in dimensions. We knew we could go with a larger size unit to reduce the running noise but we really did not want to haul around a 100lb unit in the van, which is small compared to a camper or RV. The 3000 also costs 4x not including conversion to propane. So for us, it was just not a good tradeoff for our occasional use. Thanks for watching.

  • @RoadTrekker866
    @RoadTrekker866 3 месяца назад

    And you’re also gonna be limited on where you can use the generator because the noise issues most campgrounds are getting where they don’t want generators being used.

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Yes, you are correct. If we were in a hot climate and needed to stay in a campground, we would seek a shore power connection. Otherwise if we are boondocking we may be OK with the generator. Thanks for your comment.

  • @RoadTrekker866

    Why not a Honda generator they’re known to be the quietest of all generators?

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Some people have suggested that. The 2200 which is about the same size/weight and a little less power does not run on propane with being converted. Which will reduce power even further. It also does not have the 30A RV plug and costs over 2x more before conversion. It might be a bit quieter but I suspect not enough to allow me to stay somewhere with the Honda but not this one. I'm going to measure the decibels of my unit and share. Thanks for watching.

    I commend you for inventiveness, however, would it not be advisable to spend another $60k or so and get a van that has all the power you need without that beautiful generator noise?

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Hi, thanks for watching. We don't expect to need the generator very often and definitely did not want to spend that much for a van. This was the right balance of features/value for us. Take care.

    Honda is the long term generator to have it always runs..the rest will fail soon no bueno ..

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Honda is obviously an excellent machine. My understanding is the smaller units are not duel fuel and need to be converted. The 2200 series, which was in our target size/weight range, does not have the 30A RV plug. And the cost was more than double, so we did not go that route. Thanks for sharing.

    That is one loud generator for an enclosed one, did you check the specs on a preditor generator? Their small inverter generators you barely hear.

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Predator had limited duel fuel options so I ruled them out. The smallest duel fuel I found was over 100 pounds which was much more than we wanted. Thanks for watching.

    I have 600 amps of lithium and 9500 Houghton air conditioning sleep from 8:00 pm to 7:00 and remain about 35/40%. Thermostat setting 75.

      If we are driving the next day, yes, I have 3 DC to DC 30 amps Victron and one 20 amp DC to DC, three hundred watts solar all together getting more than 100 amps; if not driving, I have a HONDA generator 2200 to recharge the battery if I need.

    I thought that was pretty loud! I wouldn't be happy if that parked next to us. If you stuff it full of lithium batteries, you can run the A/C noiselessly. Not sure how much lithium you can put in there nor how long you can run the A/C, but there are people on the Pocket FB group who have done the conversion. We had a Travato and the thing that I was happiest to lose when we switched to the Pocket was the generator (the TV was a close second). Hated the upkeep on that thing, especially since in three years, we used it only once to run the AC for the afternoon - yet we had to run it every month and change the oil. But that's just me...

    • @Outapkt
      @Outapkt 3 месяца назад

      Great, thanks for sharing your feedback. In practice, I don't think we will need it that much. If the A/C was running on full and we were right next to someone, yes I think it would be both loud and rude. I'll have to checkout those Lithium conversions, sounds like an interesting option if we ever have more of a need to use it.

    hi . i do not know where you camp but my experience is that you might very well be prohibited from using your generator in a lot of places . it seems that under load it is quite noisy . your neiborghs might no be tolerant to that , and i would lock that thing with chain to your truck . happy trails .

      Hi! Thanks for your comments. We don't usually use established campgrounds and prefer to boondock when possible. I agree with you there will be many places we can't use it - it's really for occasional A/C use only. We have a Goal Zero Yeti for 120V when we don't need the A/C. Take care.
