Winterizing the Solis Pocket (compressed air) - with one CRITICAL step missing from the manual
In this video we winterize our Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A using the compressed air method. This is an alternative to winterizing using anti-freeze. We attempt to walk through the procedure as outlined in the manual, which has some serious gaps. We also cover a critical missing step that is not in the manual.

And how long will it run on that little propane tank?
Hi! Thanks for your question. In our test, 1 hour. I think we mention something about that towards the end. We did a follow-up video to this as well, to answer a lot of questions we received. You may want to check it out. Thanks for watching and take care!
@@Outapkt The video is fantastic BTW. Some vans have a built in generator that will take fuel from the dodge fuel tank which allows you to run the generator for many hours but, I don't know what that number is either. :/ I'll find out. Thank you
This is exactly what I needed for the grey tank! Thank you.
Wonderful! Thanks again for the feedback!
Would you be open to do a heater instructional video? I’ve search to see how to turn it on but nothing happens. It might be a user error. Just a thought. 😊
Oh no! So sorry to hear that. It can be a little confusing so we will think about that as a video idea. In the meantime happy to help if you share what you are doing/seeing...
Cool video on a concept I never really thought about!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Very useful, thanks. I have a newly acquired 36B and have found your other videos also very helpful. Am curious about your rear door storage. Where did you get those and what do you use them for?
Awesome! Thanks so much for the positive feedback, it is appreciated. We did a whole video on the rear door storage, check it out here: ruclips.net/video/75y1-CwhYKM/видео.html. We put product links in the video descriptions. Let us know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching!
Good video, thanks
Appreciate that and thanks for watching!
Thank you for your videos. Very helpful. Can you tell me how you made mtn bikes fit under the bed?
Sure! We did a whole video on it! Check it out and let me know if you have any questions ruclips.net/video/SwSdTr9-yg4/видео.html
Good thing we have the 59px .
The built-in generator is definitely nice. Thanks for watching.
Those bikes look cool just wish they had a bigger motor and a front shock.
We hear you. They are probably not the type of eBikes we would have selected, but they came for free when we bought the van and we have enjoyed them. The fact that they fold is nice.
The candles are a good idea to track the electrical system
Thanks for watching and for the feedback! Hope the video helped.
Those laminated cabinet corner; I ripped the skin on my hand by hitting one of those corners, ended up doing a small filing on all cabinet corners.
That is a good idea, too bad to hear about your experience though. Thanks for sharing.
I have the 2022 Solis pocket for three years now and I must say it’s a damn shame WINNEBAGO Doesn’t utilize perfection in their built.
I agree it would be nice to have the build a little tighter. I hear mixed opinions vs other vans, some say others are "so much better" and others says "not as good as Winnebago". With this van, you get a lot for your money and unfortunately some corners are cut. I have friends who paid close to 80K for a Mercedes 4x4 empty shell or well over 40K for a Promaster shell. The amount of time, effort, and to a lesser extent cost to build it out from there should not be underestimated. Thanks for watching.
i have about version 3 starlink at my house. i'll be traveling through alaska in the spring. so i think i'll buy mini-star link and hook it into my van. no problem. However, when i get home I want to get rid of my home starlink and use the van mini-starlink system...get rid of the main house starlink. the only problem i see is cost. $150 per month instead of $120 ? i wonder if starlink will let me keep both at $150 instead of just the mini-starlink?
Hi there! Thanks for watching and sharing your thinking. I can't comment on what Starlink might allow, but I understand the home Starlink is both faster and has a higher priority for data, and it costs less. So I am not sure I would permanently switch to mini for your home. I might suggest leave home as it is and get mini for your trip. With a Roam plan you can pay $50 a month for 50GB of data while travelling (and pay extra for more data if needed). When you get home you can pause your plan and you don't pay $50 until you need it for another trip, at which time you could turn it back on. You will continue to save the $30 plan difference with your home plan intact vs the $150 mini plan. You have the 1-time cost of the mini antenna but sounds like you will buy that anyway. If you will never need the mini for another van trip I see there is a way to sell your antenna to someone else. Just some things to think about. Thanks again for watching!
We got the FVC roof rack and ladder and LOVE them. It was easy to install (I did it by myself) but would have loved to see your video first. haha...Excited that they now came out with more Products for the Promaster!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing your feedback. We really like the setup with the exception of the crossbar hitting the AC unit on the Pocket. However, it was not made specifically for it either. If you are considering the Fiamma awning then I recommend you watch our video about that. Happy travels!
Currently in my RV I'm using the high performance dish. I'm going to be downsizing from my super c motorhome and my only concern is while camping under moderate trees the high performance dish still works while my neighbor with the mini gets nothing. Have you experienced this?
Hello! Thanks for the question. When we parked the van under majority tree cover, we were unable to get service. When we had partial cover, often it would work. I have no basis to compare the high performance antenna to the mini, but it sounds like you had a good comparison your neighbor. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Question. How is the WiFi signal in your van ha in the Mini outside of it? My concern is can it penetrate the tin can? Since the router is outside in the mini. We’ve been full time in our Sprinter for almost 3yrs running a Flat mounted Gen two on the roof. I like the idea of saving a bit of power with the mini. Thanks for the video. Sub’d ❤
Hello! Thanks for watching and for the question. We did not notice any degradation using the wifi inside the van. Our antenna is mounted towards the back of the roof and we had plenty of signal even up front in the seats while driving. Thanks for the sub, it is appreciated! Hope that helps.
I'm surprised that the generator would energize the transfer switch on the Solis since it is a floating neutral. Using a floating neutral generator on my Trevato triggers a fault and will not energize the transfer switch. It requires the use of a neutral bonding plug on the gennie. You might also find that a 4000 watt unit like the Champion Dual Fuel would use considerably less fuel since it would be operating at less than 50% vs the 80-90% for the Westinghouse. It weighs about 8 lbs more but is the same physical size.
Thanks for watching and for your comments. I am not sure the Pocket 36A has a transfer switch as there is no inverter. You only have 120v when the van is plugged into shore power or a generator. As far as the generator, yes it seems very possible a larger unit could be more efficient running at a steady 50%. Thank you
Thanks. I’ll be setting up my Mini in the next few days.
Awesome! Hope it works out well for you.
The minimum voltage the mini requires is 12v. Depending on the draw and size and length of your cable, i the voltage can drop below the minimum requirement. Adding a 12-24v boost converter in between will ensure you don't drop below that minimum voltage.
Thanks for watching and for adding that useful info. That may be what was happening with my longer auto extension cable.
Most of those boost converters are roughly 80-85% efficient in the real world. If you can size the wire and length to reduce the voltage drop, straight 12v is the most battery efficient way to run the Mini, especially if you are out for extended period of time and every watt matters. It use straight 12v with my Mini and it works perfectly if you size the wire and distance appropriately.
@@markmonroe7330 I came here to make the same comment. There are plenty of different third-party cables available for Starlink dishes. One of the key differences between them is wire gauge. Bigger (lower number) is better to minimize voltage drop. A heavier gauge wire is going to be a better solution than a voltage converter because it avoids the energy loss of a voltage converter.
A good watch! Good Karma to you for sharing. Enjoy your journeys you two! BB from CANADA.
Thank you so much for watching and for the positive vibes! We love Canada and I have climbed all around the Rockies in Alberta and BC. Happy trails!
Good video folks. Thanks for sharing the experiences. It helps with my decision to go forward with the mini. You mentioned losing signal while under tress. I expect that'll happen frequently with me too, especially being frequently off grid. I'm wondering if getting a second dish that can be moved to a wider-space location for such instances. Bernie, from Alberta, CANADA.
Hello! Thanks for the feedback and the question. I think it depends on where you are going. If you are boondocking and there is a clear area nearby, why not just move your van to it? Then no need for another antenna. Personally I would just manage the fixed antenna, or get the portable antenna and set it up when you park. But not both. Thanks for watching!
This is what I call a very useful video. Thank you. I do have flat mount standard Starlink which works awesome. However, like yours, I have a small RV and the bulky router takes too much space in the back, I am thinking of switching to Starlink Mini, do you have any thoughts? Any ideas of how much performance I would lose?
Hello! Thanks for watching and your feedback is really appreciated. It takes quite a bit of time to do these videos. As far as your question, if you can afford it, I would just go with the mini and drop the separate router. You will save space and use less power. For a small van that makes sense to me. I can't compare bandwidth but others have suggested it is similar between the mini and traditional. Thanks again and safe travels!
@@Outapkt Thank you and appreciate your quick response...you guys are awesome!
Excellent show. Enjoyed the star link test
Your feedback is really appreciated, thank you for watching.
That power consumption is really good. My standard consumes ~65w when turned on. So ~23w is a 2.8x reduction. The speeds you're getting are about the same as what I get from my Standard. I rarely see anything above 150mbps.
That is great info for other viewers thank you for sharing, and watching!
Muskrats!
Were you out west for western states ?
Hello! Thanks for watching! We were out for the Bear 100. There is some footage of that race in our other video ruclips.net/video/zB-ERDEDuP8/видео.html. Hopefully our runner will get to go to Western States one of these days. Take care!
I also have a pocket. Do you both fit in the bed ? I find it impossible to sleep when I bring my wife along.
Hello! Thanks for watching and for the question! We do fine sleeping in the Pocket. There is not a lot of extra room but it works well for us and we are very comfortable. It is a nice upgrade from our old pop-top pickup truck camper, or a tent. I have read about people building an extension so the bed sticks out a little further into the cargo door area. Maybe that would help. Best of luck!
I love the no nonsense approach to your videos. Thanks for your content. BTW, the camera ❤ U 2
Appreciate your feedback, thank you! We try to share what we learn as we learn it. Thanks for watching.
Could you comment on the windows. I see nothing anywhere about the windows with the exception of they have room darkling covers. Which window open or have screens. Is there good cross ventilation with the ceiling fan running etc? Also, does all the battery charging come from the solar panels /shore power, or does the pro-master van have the higher voltage alternator that charges your batteries four time faster than the typical 180 amp alternator that generally come standard with the Dodge Pro-Master units. Appreciate any help you could provide as I'm very interested in purchasing one. William
Hi! Thanks for watching and for the questions. As far as windows, all four side windows open and have screens. These are the two on each end of the bed, the one on the sliding door, and the one above the couch. Ventilation is great with the fan running, just choose the windows to open and set the fan to your desired setting. The alternator is the standard 180 amp I believe, but is fine in our experience. It works in combo with solar to recharge when driving. Hope this helps! We have had a few issues but we really love the van. It's so much fun.
Great video, thanks. The mini does not have a motor, how do you go about changing the angle to point to the best sat? If i understsd , the mount you used is fixed angle?
Hi! Thanks for the question. Keep your eye out for our next video which we plan to publish Friday which is a follow up to Starlink. But the short answer is that you do not have to adjust it at all, it just stays fixed on the roof rack and operates fine. Thanks for watching.
What are your thoughts on the Eco Lithium battery system option for the Pocket? Good/bad/not needed?
Hello! Thanks for watching and for the question. I think you are asking about that option on the 36B floorplan. I am not aware of that option for the 36A floorplan yet (which is our model). In any case, it is expensive but would be nice to have depending on your plans for the RV. Advantages I see are much more power for longer boondocking, having 120v available when not on shore power, and ability to run the A/C at least for a limited time. We partially compensate for those limitations in our 36A with a Goal Zero 1500x battery with 120v inverter. However, that can't power the A/C. If running A/C is important when off grid you probably need to add the optional extra Ecoflow batteries too. Then you might need more solar capacity to recharge all that during the day if you are not driving. In our case we need to use a generator for A/C which can limit our camping options due to noise. And it's big to travel with. Thanks and good luck!
Love this video too! Only question, would you consider carrying a gas container for your next trip?😊
Hello! Thanks for watching and for the question! By gas container, I assume you mean like a supplemental gasoline can? I would say no. It would be messy and smelly and our running low on gas was really just bad planning on our part in not stopping when we could have. We were not in any remote areas. Normally we have pretty good gas mileage, but going 80mph into a wind and uphill required us to stop more often. Thanks again!
@Outapkt I will keep that mind when traveling, oh the need to increase the speed when the road is clear ! Lol 😆
Love these kinds of vids!!
Thanks for the feedback!
I thought I was the only person still playing the license plate game. 👍🏽 What a great adventure.
Oh it's still alive and well! Thanks for watching and for the comments.
If your older and have trouble hopping up on a high bed, how do you get up there in the first place? 😢
Hi there, thanks for watching and great question! For us, we always step on the couch seat first (right foot), then from there you can get your left knee up onto the bed and climb in. Then to get down you get your left foot onto the couch cushion first. If this is a concern I definitely recommend checking the van out in person.
I visit your channel and watch your videos. Your videos are very amazing and helpful. You are making videos with a good niche. But, I noticed a few areas where I could help optimize your videos to reach a larger audience. Would you be open to discussing this
No, thank you.
How is it driving on ice or snow? Thanks for the vid'.
Hi there! As far as driving in the ice or snow, the standard tires are terrible. We got stuck in a Sugarloaf ski area parking lot as captures in our Eclipse video (ruclips.net/video/W_OxIr-NSYI/видео.html). Everyone I know in the northeast with a version of the Promaster has changed to more aggressive tires and we plan to do the same. A friend of ours who has a 2022 Pocket 36A with more aggressive tires was able to drive around the same snowy/slushy parking lot at Sugarloaf with no issues. He runs Cooper Discovery AT3 and says with those tires it handles pretty good in the winter (for not being a 4WD anyway). Thanks and take care!
@Outapkt Thanks so much. I'm nervous to buy front wheel drive, and I keep hearing it does fine in the snow. Appreciate the confirmation.
Thanks for taking the time to make that Video. This was super helpful. Have you tried using the heater with the Generator? Also, what specific cables did you buy to hook up the Gas? That's a great workaround!
Hello! We appreciate your comments and feedback! As far as using the heater with the generator, the standard heater on this van model is propane-powered and runs off the 12v coach batteries. I don't think the heater consumes very much electrical power. If the generator was running at the same time, it would simply be re-charging the coach batteries so really would have no effect on the heater. I think this model of air conditioner does have an optional electrical heater element that can be installed onto it, so maybe that is what you were thinking of. I am pretty certain this is not installed from the factory. If that was added, it would need the 120v to run and thus would need shore power or the generator to function. Hope that helps. As far as the products we used, we always include info/links in the video description so you can look there for more information. Thanks and take care!
Thank you for the real world actual owner review which is quite hard to find with RUclips's search logic. Perhaps change the title to indicate this is a model 36A as opposed to a 36B.
Hello! Thanks a lot for watching and for the feedback. We are planning on doing a detailed 1 year review as well, so keep an eye out for that early next year. We did put our specific model, 36A, right at the beginning of the description. I do think the review is applicable to both models in any case. Thank you
Super helpful! I was super curious about this! Thanks!!!
Awesome! Hopefully we answered all your questions! Thanks for watching.
Been watching your videos and enjoy them very much. We are in the market for a camper of some sort and your videos are helping us a lot. I do have one question. I noticed you have no bathroom. How do you deal with showers and toilet needs.
Hello! Thanks for watching and for your questions. This van comes with a portable toilet but as you point out, no bathroom or toilet. In our case we plan ahead to be in places with bathrooms and/or showers when needed. We have the portable toilet in case of emergencies. For a small van, having the extra space instead of the bathroom is a big plus for us and a good tradeoff. But it might not be for everyone. The 36B version of this van has a bathroom but our 36A does not. Thanks and good luck with your search!
Hows that 12v power cord holding up…. I know the minis can be finicky with power.. any drops or anything noticeable with it? Link to the 12 plug?
Hey there! Thanks for watching and for your questions. No power issues with the mini. The only issue we had is that sometimes the 12v adapter wiggles loose from the van receptacle. Otherwise all good. Check video description for links to all products we used. Thanks and take care!
Love your review & imput!! Is it easy to winterize? Recommend a dealer? Thanks! Kathleen
Hi there! Thanks for watching and for the feedback! This van has no hot water and no toilet so it is pretty straightforward to winterize using anti-freeze or air blow-out. We might do a video on that at some point. As far as dealers, you can search rvtrader.com to get an idea for prices and what is available. There are some used ones on the market also which can save a bunch of $$$. Your basic choice is: far away dealer for best price, or local dealer for reliable service after purchase. Owners report that it can be hard to get these serviced if you did not buy it from a local dealer, even for a warranty issue and this has been our experience also. Maybe you will get lucky and find the best price locally! Good luck in your search!
Great video. I have the 59PX with the pop-up and no rack system, so I'd have to think about how I would mount it. But encouraging to see the successful install - you guys were due for something to go right!
Hi again! Thanks a lot for following along. It has been a good upgrade and not too difficult. Instead of a roof mount, you can always set up the ground antenna if you are not moving. We will do a follow-up on our experience with the starlink shortly.
First off - you're very patient and forgiving. Looks like the product was designed by someone in China that saw a photo of the rear doors and just went off that. There should be a fastener that could make use of the many existing holes rather than requiring new ones to be drilled. That's a big red flag for me. I agree that it's a great idea to add practical storage to those empty spaces, but I'm not impressed by that particular brand. Also, jealous beyond words that you can fit your Solis into your garage!
Hi again! As far as the panels, once installed, we are happy with them. We never did fill in the holes above the top panels and we don't really notice it now. I still think these panels are a decent value and make good use of some otherwise wasted space. As far as the garage, yes that is one reason we picked this van. We had to raise the door height though. It barely fits! Thanks again for watching and for your comments!
The top of the door "stock panel" is not a panel that exists on a Ram Promaster 1500 from Ram. Those panels and holes were installed by Winnebago. Van Essentials designed the top storage for the base model Ram Promaster 1500 and not specifically for the Solis Pocket.
@@dan-tv Thanks a lot for pointing that out, I did not know that.
I hope you keep buying things and testing them out. My Pocket is still factory configuration, but there are modifications I want to do. Your videos are helpful. Good to know about the insulation in the doors. I have a bunch of Thinsulate that I didn't know what to use it on. Now I do!
That's great, thanks for the feedback and comments. Hopefully we are helping you pick the right upgrades for your van. Definitely load up those rear doors with your thinsulate!
@@Outapkt I bought a Joolca hot water shower to hang from the back doors and use the large propane tank to fuel it, so, I won't be buying the door panel storage. I got a "back of seat" storage unit that can be mounted under the bed, hanging from the bed slats. You have to raise the bed to access it, so it's not as convenient. Anyway, keep those suggestions coming. . . it's good stuff!
I’m a new Solis 36B owner and have found your videos very helpful. Thanks for doing them.
Thank you so much for the feedback! We hope you enjoy your new Pocket and thanks for watching.
Does the bed still fold easily with the fitted sheets or a mattress pad
Thanks for watching and for your question! To fold the bed, the different pieces of the mattress have to come apart so you can't do it with the sheets still on (at least not fully on). We end up leaving the bed down most of the time as it provides an additional storage shelf when travelling.
How is your generator working out? I'm in the market to purchase one to use it with the AC. I do have an Ecoflow Delta 2 Max and Goal Zero from previous years but I don't think that's enough to use for the AC.
Hello! Thanks for watching and for your question. I agree that to use the A/C, a battery bank or even both of them will not really hold up for more than 2-3 hours. Some people have suggested a more efficient/lower power A/C unit. To rely on batteries you would probably need that and a full-on lithium battery system. In our case, we don't use the A/C very often so for us it's not worth the investment right now. The downside to the generator approach is the noise which can limit the places it can be used. We have been happy with our Westinghouse generator (amzn.to/3yMiT3F) though it has not seen too much use to be honest. Aside from A/C, we don't have much of a need to fire it up. It does start right up and run reliably. It operates at a fairly high RPM when the A/C is on high as you can see in the video. The other generator we considered and others have suggested is the Pulsar GD400BN (amzn.to/3YcwwTV). It has more power in a package about the same size with all the same connections I wanted. Whether it will run quieter or not, I cannot say, but I would like to know. Certainly the amount of power is more that the pocket really needs, based on our findings, but this should allow it to run at a lower RPM so maybe it would be a little quieter? Good luck and let us know how things work out for you!
@@Outapkt what about the Ecoflow Smart Generator Dual Fuel? Do you have any feedback? I live in Northern California and would use it for emergencies only. It looks like it does but I don’t want to stretch the generator capacity if is not going to be able to keep up if is too hot.
@@valeriabalmaceda1069 I feel like that generator is just a bit under-powered. Also it does not have a 30amp output connector, which you really want if you plan to connect it to the Pocket power input port, to power the van A/C and the other 120V circuits at the same time. Maybe if you combined that generator with adding a "soft-start" on the A/C and used a 30A to 20A adapter it could handle just the A/C but that would not be recommended, and you would not want to power anything else (like charging the coach batteries or a laptop etc) as that might be too much of a load for a 20A circuit. I also think that model is quite heavy compared to the two I mentioned above (it is 67 pounds vs 43 for the Westinghouse). Based on my experience, I would not go any lower power-wise than the Westinghouse. Let me know what you do and good luck!
@@Outapkt that’s what I was worried about. Thank you for the feedback this truly helps to make a better informed decision.
9:48 maybe some plumber's tape would help.....🤷♂️
Yes. That might be our next step. It is still leaking after 9 months if you can believe it. Or it might be on the input side, we need to investigate. Thanks for watching.
He shouldn’t have to do these repairs. WINNEBAGO is getting a good price for these fitted out vans and should be utilizing perfection and a good final inspection.
Love your choice of van camper and especially the modifications you have done.
Thanks so much for the feedback! We are having a blast with it.
