I am retiring three days before my 57th Birthday. Here in the UK that is not that unusual, if you have enough money to do it. I am fortunate that I am not defined by my job. I have lots of other interests and activities. What does hit hard though, is knowing I will lose my professional standing. I will be an "old person".
That loss IS one of the mental transitions that we all go through. Many professionals hold on to some function of their job for a time to ease the transition. Writing, speaking or consulting are common choices. Have a great retirement, Gordon!
Bravo Paul Peixoto! Thanks for your contribution to the on-going retirement transformation. It's great to discover yet another person navigating their third act of unretired life. Let's connect and create even more influence on RUclips and across the US and our planet!
Great to hear from you, Art. Retirement is changing and we have to change with it! Glad you're here to help us all do that. If you'd like to connect email me at the address under the "about" section on my YT page. I'll look forward to it! Keep up the great work!

911. I LOVED my job.!! I was convinced/enticed, that I deserved it. .OH NO NO.!!!! I retired, and i couldn't return. I hate it. I miss everything about my job. I lost interest in all my activities, hobbies.! I stressed so much, i now have anxiety, and insomnia.... and severe depression. I hate myself for retiring. I hate living. I don't go out at all anymore, and i have to plans, goals,... i just suffer every day. My mental and physical health are declining,... with depression i just don't care anymore. I don't care about anything. I ruined my life.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I highly suggest that you seek some professional help. Depression is not something to take lightly. We get so much of our identity from our work. It's often after the transition to retirement that we become aware of this. Please get some help.
@PaulPeixoto Thank you!, and thank you for acknowledging that we come aware of our identity, purpose etc. after. I have reached out for help from psychologist, 988 suicide line, VA crisis line, Pastors, etc... Im really in a bad state. It's 3:50 am. I don't sleep anymore. You're right. Depression really is serious. I'm not able to accept , and I'm mentally paralyzed. Depression has destroyed my outlook on life. I was told " at this point, no one can help me but myself " I'm VERY AFRAID. To be experienced myself suffering, with no way of getting my life/ job back.

Not that difficult unless you have mental illness!
Health always comes first.
Too bad it's always about the USA.
I think the transitions I mentioned in this video are applicable to all retired humans. Are there specific issues in your country you'd like to see me address?
I think the definition of retirement is very personal and at least a little different for all of us. I also don’t think anyone should start thinking about this on the last day of work, this isn’t the last day of school before summer vacation! Thanks for this, I agree with everything you said.
I agree, Peter. I think our cuture pushes the "classic retirement" ending and so many assume that's what they should aim for. When they get there many find it's not for them. Thanks for watching and commenting. you can catch me on TikTok these days @paulfpeixoto. I'll be getting back to YT soon!😏
Why do so many retirees just sit home all day?
Because that's what they've desired to do their entire lives. Many hated their work, so retiring from it was the objective from the start.
@@PaulPeixoto That makes sense Mr. Peixoto. Do you think retirement is a bit different then for those who are, or were, self-employed?
@@Essays4College Yes, I think it's very different for most self-employed. I'm one of those. I do the work I do because I love it. It's not physically demanding so I can continue to do it into my retirement years. I have complete control as I can slow down with each passing year and take off any time I choose during the year. This is where retirement is changing. It's not a line drawn in the sand, a date at which you expire.
Staying creative in your third act of life takes a little work. Here's ten ideas to help you maintain that creative spirit. Don't forget to subscribe and give this video a like! Thanks!

WOW - LIFECHANGING VIDEO - YOU MAKE A BIG DIFFERNCE!!!!!! THANKYOU!!!
Thanks, Diane! Let me know if I can help you in the future.
Why would you want to retire? Everyone who retires talks about finding a worthy endeavor, socialising with others, giving structure to their time, giving meaning and purpose to their lives. In other words people want A JOB in retirement. Duh
I agree. I dislike it when people say, "I'm keeping busy." As if they are looking for things to fill the time until they die. Why not seek a new purpose? The third act of life is a fantastic time to explore new expressions of yourself, things your career got in the way of.
Thank you for the video. To be honest, it's not so easy to make the shift at 50 years old. I don't see my calling paying my bills.

Wow!!!! The intro was way too long
Sorry. Hope you stuck around for the message!
I'm a physician. I plan to scale down and work part-time and get a full night sleep every night once I've established solid savings. I think I will be sad and my brain will be sluggish if I completely stop working. Work isn't just for income, but it's a life purpose, being useful and making a contribution to the world.
Agree 100%! Your plan sounds great. Thanks for joining the convo!
Yes
I am a blue collar worker who has never done a PowerPoint. I certainly would not want to stay in the job I currently have which is physically demanding. My past experience has been medical for 28 years, which I absolutely want nothing to do with in my future because of the stress it cost me. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to be when I grow up.

Can someone direct to how to deal w a low EQ person? All the tools are to expand your own EQ. Frustration with a extremely low EQ work member is driving many to leave company.

I do plan on going to the gym, yoga, hiking, and watersports. No water here but I'm moving near water. gym has been a regular part of my life.
That all sounds great. Keep up the activity. many in the third act of life let all these things go and sit on the couch. It often leads to a short third act. Be careful that you don't move too close to the water! Sea levels are rising! 🙏🏽
THANKS, SOME GOOD STUFF HERE
You bet!
In my first year of retirement, I didn't have time to get depressed. Too many projects around the home and property. But at 2-1/2 years, I am lonely and questioning many things. I'm a part-time adult lifeguard with other retirees, and that's great. But I've slipped into a moderate depression with the constant loneliness. I just need more social connections, but it's very difficult to establish. That's really where I've failed in life. No marriage, children, friends, or close family. I'm sure there are millions of retirees in the same scenario.
You're not alone. Many feel the same way. But you haven't failed. If you truly have no friends or family to share life with I'd highly recommend that you pursue joining some groups to "force" the production of relationships. Start with groups that are organized around things you are interested in. Join as many as your schedule will allow. Don't lean on one group to create all the new relationships in your life. Spreading yourself around will allow for the "chemistry" to spontaneously happen. If you need more help my email address is in the "about" section. Feel free to reach out.
@@PaulPeixoto Thank you. I'm trying.
I have two 4-hour part-time shifts, but the loneliness is still killing me. Never married, no children, no family, no friends. Work associates were all I ever had. I'm trying to connect, but no one seems to care.

Once you give up your job, that’s it, nobody wants you anymore! If you look for a job, the one you find, if you find one, won’t be at the level you were at.
That's very often the case, Itcajh. That's why I advocate for creating your own job. This third act of life is the perfect season to go entrepreneurial. It's never been easier (due mostly to tech) and provides a much better, supplementary income stream than being a Walmart greeter.
Even that's rare. Most of the retirees I know don't work. They are home most of the day. I'm curious about this though. People talk about saving and their 401k and all that but when it actually comes to that age they are not doing most of those things or spending the money they worked so hard and long for! Why is this??
Thanks a lot 🙏

There is a writer in me begging to come out!
That sounds great, Frederick! Lot's of third act-ers feel the inspiration to write. It's a very common encore career pursuit. What kind of writing to you want to do? Fiction? Non-fiction? Career expertise related? I'd love to know. 💪🏼
Career expertise. I'm 25 years in law enforcement and the 5 years I have been training on emotional intelligence and mental health.
What a great - and needed - background, Frederick. What a tremendous combination of skills. We need that book today! If I can help you out in any way please feel free to reach out. My email address is in the "about" section here on the RUclips channel. 💪🏼
Thanks Paul. This was good. I was actually thinking of my list yesterday. I was very focused for years to be a doctor. Went another path. But just read yesterday about a 62 year old nj man who just became a dr and start his residency. That got me thinking a minute until I said nope. That ship has sailed. I could do it yes. But I don't want to be under any authority with mandated schedule for my third act. And as you know there are other avenues I want to explore
Love the progression of thought here, Don. Love that you didn't dismiss the Dr idea totally out of hand. Lot's of third act-ers are looking for that same autonomy and flexibility that you are. That's why so many go the self-employment route. Our demographic is the largest starter of new businesses! (not what our culture would have us believe.) Looking forward to your progress on the project. 💪🏼 Thanks for watching and sharing!
