Captions stating at least the area for each would have been nice. A little captioned commentary or description maybe would have enhanced an otherwise great vid. Chingford Hall had a terrible reputation but looked luxurious by comparison with some of the others!!

Looks like they’re mostly system built/LPS buildings, so it’s probably a good thing they’ve been demolished since they’d probably be falling down by themselves by now…

I remember there being big bronze statue on the Estate where my Nan & Grandad lived, in Islington/Highbury area. We use to visit around 1980. I was younger than 5 so have limited memories and both my parents are dead now. I will research these Estates in your video to see if any may of being my Nan's Estate. Its the bronze statute i'd like to find.

Just watched this.. Brought back memories of a friend who lived on the Milton court estate New cross. Orpheus tower, back in the 80s. Shame the block was demolished. Those were warm large flats. Think there`s one large block left on that estate.

Appalling - how architects and planners get away with treating people like zoo animals is hard to understand. The people responsible for structures like these are sub-human.

Eh, the well-built and well maintained ones are actually pretty nice to live in. Trellick Tower (No. 1 in this video) for example is a very desirable place to live now with flats selling for up to £900,000 - precisely because they are well designed, soundproofed, fairly roomy, and have floor-to-ceiling windows and large balconies (and are not prone to spontaneously combusting unlike ones in towers which have been covered in cladding). There’s also the Barbican Estate in London - while that isn’t council housing it is similar in style with its 3 ~40 storey concrete towers - and that is also very desirable to live in. Unfortunately though many of these buildings were badly built to begin with or have been badly maintained, but saying that they are all horrible to live in is simply not true, as some of them were actually designed with people in mind.

@@JohnathanElySmithwell a lot of the council blocks erected at the time are not great to live in regardless of how tall they be. the structure of the buildings in some four stories blocks for example is terrible and full of issues for the residents. Some high rises are actually nicer and quite spacious inside..etc So it’s not the height or the style of architecture. It’s all the little architectural shortcuts and experimental ‘social’ housing constructs at the time that can cause numerous problems for residents. Lack of privacy lots of little corners..etc

I lived in King's Crescent Estate (4:25 - 4:30) in the 90s and 00s, during which time both its tower blocks got demolished. They'd survived fires and had derelict shed areas on the ground floor which were being used by crackheads, heroin addicts and sex workers off the street with their punters. Colourful times. Five or ten minutes up the road by car you had middle-class Islington, home to Tony Blair et al...

There was a necessity for them but you wonder how many people were/are happy living in these places. How do you measure happiness etc I know, but I mean generally. Once you're inside it's better I guess depending on what you have. I've also lived in a rough area but not as brutalist as these places.

I lived in Hyde Park flats in the early 1980’s . They were a fantastic place to live… there was a great community And people were really friendly. The views were amazing and it was incredible watching the winter storms roll in from the west turning the grey city white with snow. . The sunsets were ethereal and while all our friends were freezing in run down terrace housing we were toasty warm as the the flats were heated via centrally heated district heating. The flats were spacious and had balconies and were duplex. The passage ways were wide enough for milk floats ( electric powered milk trucks ) bringing door to door grocery deliveries Decades before tescos Waitrose Asda or Walmart ….. the local pub called the Target was one of the friendliest and most welcoming pubs I’ve ever had the pleasure of going to . I never particularly liked country and western, but we used to have great fun, playing Tennessee early forwards. Mule train on the jukebox as there was a rather eccentric fellow. He used to sing along very loudly and bang the table with a metal tray throughout the song which always set a self with hysterics. The pub owners regularly put out free food, which is very welcome as we were poor students (back in the day when students for only secondhand clothes and bought the leftovers from the Sheffield market. To make Sunday lunch. Sadly I park flats was one of the first ones demolished it was the largest one at the highest point of Sheffield. I don’t know why they demolished it. It was structurally sound and a brilliant place to live. Prior to living there, I lived in Broomhill and the locals from Broomhill thought we were mad, going to live there and said it was a very dangerous place. The worst violence I saw there was when the police raided the working men’s club where Striking miners were having a meeting sadly, these were the days before mobile phones and video recorders, but I can tell you it was a full on Battle with vanloads of fully geared up right police from the Met in London, sent up to quash the rebellion. I’ll never forget it. Another time I did Guy with an axe screaming And shouting and smashing at the police station door until he was subdued I’m dragged away to hospital. But this was an isolated incident most of the time it’s peaceful, happy and friendly place. Some of the other comments I think are from people who didn’t live there Although I suspect that the place could’ve gone downhill after we left as I neared that the councils policy was to send people to live there who had come from psychiatric institutions under the governments ‘care in the community ‘ programme …….Thanks for posting😊
