Announcement - Throwback Thursdays | Just Films & That
I would say it’s my most WATCHED dog/family movie. The story is good, the characters are solid, if a little too generic at times, and the heart of the movie is superb.
1st
well said. great accent
I enjoyed it too. Ironically, considering the general pace of the film, I found the ending a little rushed but that is nit picking. 7/10 is a fair review
On the subject of Blair not being a real place, whilst that is true, the idea of Blair in the film is that it was a historic town up in the woods that was abandoned and the town of Burkittsville was later on founded close by, which is a real place in Maryland. However, most of the film was not made in Burkittsville, but somewhere else altogether. According to the Blair Witch 'lore', the house they end up in at the end was the house of Rustin Parr, the serial killer they mention in the early part of the film who claimed he committed the murders on the orders of an old woman that lived up in the woods.
It's one of my faves, but I think there are some people who think 'scary' = jump scares and gore, and I don't think they go past the surface level. You have to have empathy for the people on film, you have to put yourself in their shoes, then it's scary, because it's not a million miles away from the kind of terror people have experienced. Being manipulated, being lost, being hungry, being hunted, you can transplant this experience to so many other experiences. It's what people who are bullied or abused daily feel, it's what certain minorities feel, they may not be alone in the woods hunted by a demonic witch, but they go through a similar experience.

I saw the TV adaptation by the Sci-fi Channel when that came out. Then later on saw the David Lynch version, both the film and the extended version released for TV, then I read the books up until God Emperor of Dune, haven't gone beyond that since. Villeneuve's Dune was certainly good in that it was the most consistent adaptation to date, a lot of thought had gone into everything, whereas the Lynch and Sci-fi versions are a little messy. The only downside was I knew the story like the back of my hand so nothing was surprising, it was all about the visuals. Apparently Anya Taylor-Joy is in the upcoming film so I'm looking forward to finding out who she plays, it may be a new character as there is only one major female character left to play in the books and she's only a small child by the end of the story. There is also a minor female character who is an old woman so that doesn't fit Taylor-Joy either, perhaps she's voicing another character but my money is on her being a brand new character.
I'm convinced that Watership Down was a film where the BBFC just didn't bother to watch it, one of their lazy days, and to admit that would destroy their reputation. They saw some pictures of rabbits and thought 'probably a U'
My girlfriend hasn't seen Star Wars, but she feels like she has due to how connected it is to the cultural zeitgeist, so I guess for that reason she feels she doesn't have the need to.
This was my favourite Scorcese movie in a long time, maybe my favourite since Goodfellas. I've only seen it the once though so might change my mind through a rewatch.
**SPOILERS** I think the reason the perspective is kept more vague is mostly down to the concept of white guilt. There have been a lot of movies that have dealt with the subject of who is and isn't guilty, the point is that it's always more complicated than that. We as humans don't want to see in what way we are responsible for the suffering around us, we have degrees of separation. This movie is playing with that concept I think, it wants the audience to see through the eyes of Earnest because that's how most of us see these things, we lie to ourselves, we tell ourselves we are doing the right thing, we make excuses. Truth is people don't like to have a finger waving at them, the reason the people of the Osage Nation were killed was due to the complicit nature of the human condition. You tell an audience of people that their complicity in voting in a colonial government or buying products made by slave labour helps to contribute towards these problems, they are going to tell you where to stick it. I think that was the intention, the Osage Nation already know this story, they've heard it thousands of times and they know that nobody listened to them when they told it. Scorcese knows that if you tell this story like it's a lecture, like he's pointing the finger and saying 'you white people should feel ashamed of yourselves', he knows that message won't get through to people. It would be dismissed as 'woke propaganda' or something along those lines. In this method, I think it gets through to people more, okay sure they can tell themselves 'it wasn't me, it was those guys', but as we see unfolding throughout the film, everyone was complicit, the FBI only got involved after dozens, possibly hundreds of murders. People saw the Osage nation as savages, they didn't see them as people and that wasn't just a local problem, it was a systemic problem. So Earnest may have been the real criminal, but I think he was also supposed to be the window of the audience, because we don't want him to be complicit, we are screaming at him saying 'do the right thing, tell the truth', and even after everything, even when he convicts his Uncle, he still can't bring himself to admit he was poisoning his wife. Because none of us do, none of us want to admit our part in the abuse of other human beings, even if there are degrees of separation. Earnest can tell himself 'I didn't kill those people, someone else did', just as we tell ourselves we aren't chopping down the rainforest. But we are, we are all complicit on some level, and I think the movie wanted us to understand that, because when movies tell us we're all naughty boys and should feel ashamed of ourselves, we want to switch off.
You're always onto a winner with the Coen Brothers. It's also an interesting concept, making a film where the setting is a real period in musical history but the musicians are mostly fictional. Another example of something like that would be Nashville which is also a great film.
Nice review
Love this movie!!
Great review 👍🏻
Good Podcast.
Please Please Please read the book first by Alexander Masters about Stuart Shorter & then the movie! My name is Jason Turner, I was in the same Children's Home as Stuart in Oakington, Cambridgeshire called Midfield Observation and Assessment Centre, a Hell Hole it was, rife with child Abuse! There was a warden in charge called Keith Laverack who Stuart mentions, it's in the book & mentioned in the film. Laverack sexually abused me as a child, as he did Stuart too. Laverack was jailed in 1997 for child abuse, sentenced to 18 years in prison, last I heard he was up for parole. I found Stuart an inspiration after being given the book in Cambridge on a visit abt my child Abuse case in 2003/04 with my solicitor. Thank you for talking about this amazing story, I wish more people could read the book and watch the film! Jason..
Whoa. Just watched the film as a Cambridge resident it was nice to see the city on film. Always used to see people on Christ’s pieces when we were kids/goths and chatted to them.
Respect to you! You need marketing, look into smzeus!
I also have never understood why The Wanderers is never discussed in nostalgic movie conversations. The Wanderers is one of the most under-rated movies, ever. IMO it is much much better than the Warriors. It almost feels like the Wanderers is based on a true story, where the Warriors could never happen and actually makes very little sense. I feel like i could have been part of this podcast. I'm such a nerd and the Wanderers are one of my favorite films so I've done a ton of research on the film for absolutely no reason. Inside stories, filming locations, Directors commentary, and I've read the book the movie is based on. Ya like I said, total nerd. I recently mentioned this movie to Chazz Palminteri since he grew up in the Bronx in this exact timeframe (1962) and the filming happened close to Chazz's neighborhood. He hasn't mentioned it in his podcast yet. Cheers.
Really nice summary of the film (or the actors and their involvement!).
Dreadful film. You can tell Stephen Merchant wasn't part of the writing.

I love this film, probably for the "I want those powers" aspect. My main issue honestly is I think the film spends too little time on Bruce's powers. The deleted scenes on the DVD, as well as the script, which you can find online, have LOADS of extra stuff Bruce did with his powers. Stuff like the montage of him using his powers (The "A Little Less Conversation" montage) and the prayers were way too short I feel. The director's commentary on the DVD says he doesn't like to show more than the bare minimum to get the point across, but I think that's a poor idea. There's a whole section on the deleted scenes of Bruce answering prayers individually, and then God later showing him the problems he caused, to show him that sometimes "Yes" isn't the right answer. I do think it has a bit of an issue of audience. It's not entirely family friendly with its swearing and sexual content, but it also never goes fully into that "Okay, what kind of things would a human REALLY do with God's powers?" which you can do when you're making a film for adults.
