Install & Configure openmediavault (omv6) | DIY NAS Part 3 - Software
Build your own DIY Network Attached Storage (NAS) … it’s actually pretty easy - even for a beginner. And by using old hardware (which is still better than what’s in an off-the shelf NAS), it can be done cheaply - if not for free.
In this video (part 3 of 3) I walk you through how to get, install, and configure openmediavault - a free and fairly lightweight NAS software that is easy on older hardware (and on inexperienced users).
Check out part 1 where I explain why I decided to go the DIY route and go over some of the basics … as well as part 2 where I go over the (10 year old) hardware I am using, fix existing issues, and discuss how I plan to configure the NAS. (see links below).

Spring Maintenance on Kubota L2501 (basic)
I saw a 7 minute video on here about how easy and don't need to send it back and new product sent out... Bull... Yes I filled out online form and got answer in 4 days. Want me to pick a pruner under $30. Not a ratcheting pruner like I had. Also send it back in making sure I track it since if lost in mail tough luck. That 7 min video is fake and done by Fiskars.
sorry to hear ... I'm just sharing my experience - which apparently has been very different then yours ... (no one asked me to send anything in)
THANK YOU!!!!!
you're welcome ... ;-)
OK, but y haven’t I seen anybody attempt to use this as a vacuum I don’t see why you cannot use this as a pool vacuum
😏 ... interesting perspective ...
THANK YOU!! THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!
you're welcome ... 😎
My OMV 5 server died yesterday. I'm optimistic that it's just the PSU. Been years since I've had to touch any settings so I'm hoping I don't need to reinstall. But if I do, this video will be helpful.
good luck on the rebuild ... keep us posted on your progress
@@HaukesProjects So I bought a new PSU but before installed it, I tried plugging in the old PSU with the new power cord. Just on a whim. And it powered up. Didn't expect that. However that was the end of the good news. The machine won't boot. Heck, I can't even get it to POST. But, I bought the motherboard and CPU in 2009. So I definitely got my money worth because I think the board and CPU were less than $120 combined. Because I'm cheap I bought a used board and CPU which were very inexpensive because they use DDR 3 and I didn't want to buy new RAM. So I got those in the mail yesterday and need to put them in the case. I'll probably also take the operating system disk and clone it to a SSD that I forgot I bought years ago. More reliable than a mechanical drive.
did you know you have a pic of a celebrity in you background? ruclips.net/user/diemaus. Thanks for the interesting video . Just what I needed.
lol - I do ... thanks for catching that ... (I grew up with "Die Sendung mit der Maus" - now I have a mug ;-) ...)
Great job ....thanks a lot for your video
you are most welcome ... hopefully I get to finish the series soon (sometimes life get's in the way)
Would you be interested to do the same for OMV 7.x install? Thank you. Downgraded to version 6.5 and your tutorial was perfect.
interested yes ... but I doubt I have the time in the foreseeable future (sorry) - hop omv6 works for you for now
Excellent tutorial, thank you!! Very much appreciated!
glad you liked it ...
Almost gave up on OMV until I found your video...I absolutely like your presentation and explanations and sorted me out...Have subscribed! :)
much appreciated ... I went through the same thing - that's why I ended up making the video 😎
I found this extremely useful, and I have eventually set up OMV following your guide. I just wonder what happened to you. This extremely helpful video has been your last upload in over a year.
what happened is "life" ... simultaneous doubling of load at work, then a death in the family (w me being the executer in a foreign country - so I am splitting my time between 2 hemispheres at the moment) ... things will get better and I already have several videos shot waiting for me having the time to edit them
Весьма полезно, спасибо!
пожалуйста ;-)
"KAAAAAAAAAAAAAARL"
Super Anleitung, vielen Dank!
gerne doch ... 😉
Thanks! Come back and do part IV sometime.
I absolutely will ... part 4 (through 9) have been scripted and are ~50% shot ... only - I currently have a bit much on my plate (see my other replies to comments here), so it will unfortunately be a little longer before I have the time to edit and post them (sorry) thank you so very much your kind words and the superthanks ... VERY much appreciated
Great video, you should keep making software tutorials.
thank you ... I will make some more ... but my interests are all over the board ... 😜
My question or you can say a request if you can make a video on how to shift all of your hard-drives to a new system with all users and shares intact. Reason maybe killing the OS or upgrading the hardware.
not only can you request it - it's already 85 shot 👍 ... only - I currently have a bit much on my plate (see my other replies to comments here), so it will unfortunately be a little longer before I have the time to edit and post them
I left OMV years ago for unraid, but this is easily one of the best tutorials I've ever watched on RUclips. Great job, very clear and concise!
high praise ... I much appreciate it ... hopefully I get to finish the series soon (sometimes life get's in the way)
One of the greatest instructor online! It is not easy to teach or tell a story while allowing people to easily follow alone, thanks!
wow ... I am humbled by that assessment ... thank you so very much 😊
I have been using the same NAS Box for almost 10 yrs now. AWESOME box. Still on OMV4 but working to get 7 installed.
agree - nice formfactor & does everything I need it to ... ;-)
Great tutorial, but something must have changed with snapraid... i have to chose an array when i want to create it and there is a pulldown menue, but i have no entries... so i am stuck there now. Edit: I managed to create an array and select it before creating the pool, worked fine. But somehow I cant run the scheduled task for snapraid sync... i get an error message, some snapraid.conf file was not found... weird. I already tried to ssh in and did a sudo apt upgrade and update... didnt work. Here is the beginning of the error message: "Failed to execute command 'export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LANG=C.UTF-8; export LANGUAGE=; export SHELL=/bin/sh; sudo --shell --non-interactive --user='root' -- /var/lib/openmediavault/cron.d/userdefined-d39281e8-cc5b-4834-8de2-50427e97badb 2>&1' with exit code '1': Self test... No configuration file found at '/etc/snapraid.conf'" Well, what I did then was maybe a bit gung ho, but I ssh into the mediavault server and went to /etc/snapraid and copied the .conf file i found there to /etc/snapraid.conf - and that seemed to have worked. Weird weird...
Sadly there is no part 4 announced on the video end. I like the tutorial, not just showing how to but briefly explaining the stuff (which is more important). I hope to not need part 4 but nevertheless, it's better to know generally what I have to do in case it happens.
the good news are: part 4 (through 9) have been scripted and are ~50% shot ... only - I currently have a bit much on my plate (see my other replies to comments here), so it will unfortunately be a little longer before I have the time to edit and post them (sorry)
One of the early developers from truenas helped develop OMV because at the time the debian linux option was non existent with truenas core before scale was announced.
Nicely done! Thank you!
welcome
what the reason of puting another usd driver inside the machine, real I dodnt understand
fair question ... the 1st stick is the install medium - the 2nd is for when you choose to use a USB stick as your OS drive ... you can use any USB port (I happen to have an internal one, so it's a bit "cleaner") - you will also need to Install the “flashmemory” Plugin (@9:59)
this video should go to the official wiki of omv as getting started guide
I am all in favor of that 😎 ... feel free to propose that to the wiki's admin ... 👍
This is by far the best OMV tutorial on RUclips! Thank you
Thank you ... feel free to share far & wide ... 😉
Fully agree. This is totally amazing. I was debating what to use but now i will use OMV + mergerFS + snapraid. Thank you very much for the clear explanations!
Installing OVM through Raspberry PI was a real nightmare. I had to reinstall Raspberry Pi Lite + OVM at least 4 times and waste a 1T microsd non cat 10 to the trash and use ovm-firstaid to recover the misconfigured eth0 interface due to interface renaming to get my own static IP. I spent about one week to get 5 minutes of this awesome video. I hope all this effort worth. Every second of this video is definitelly valuable. Thank you so much.
sorry to hear you went through that ordeal ... but VERY happy to hear this was helpful ... 😎
Hey, when i put in the first command is says Wget: invalid option -- '0' How do I fix this?
I assume you are talking about installing the “OMV-Extras.org” Plugin (@9:10) ...? No knowing the exact circumstance, I can only suggest the following: - make sure you're logged into the server as root, and - make sure you got the command right (w/o a typo) ... in fact, make sure your copy & paste: wget -O - github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugin-Developers/packages/raw/master/install | bash ... if this doesn't work, we may need a few more pieces of information (and/or read up on the plugin and its installation here: forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/5549-omv-extras-org-plugin/)
Excellent video, thank you. My total watch time was about 4 hours as I left it on screen during my set up! I had tried viewing several other YT tutorials, junk compared to this👌.
very kind words ... thank you - feel free to spread the word and watch hours more ... 😎
This is a great tutorial Hauke, the one I always wanted to make ;o) weiter so!
thanks & Danke ... ;-)
Great, and very helpful video. Thank you for making it. Peter
you're welcome ... and thanks 👍🏼
Hi, I have viewed this video and is impressed of your way of explaining this. I have an OMV6 with some disks (mirror) and started with OMV4 and has upgraded. Found you recently and will continue listen. If I my ask, I would like an video about hot to handle disks that get red och yellow marks as status in the Devices panel. To be safe with a OMV server for lots of videos and photos it has to be handled when you reach problem. Also, how do you backup and restore your OS-disk?
Hi @peppesbodega2208 ... that video is in the pipeline - in fact, I have videos in the making for backup (data & OS), as well as swapping drives that are nearing its end (data & parity) ... unfortunately, I have recently seen a significant increase in workload (in my dayjob) and had a death in the family requiring me to divert a LOT of time for personal things ... be patient, the videos are coming
Thanks for quick response. Sounds great that you are on this already. But take your time and take care I will be here when you are back with some goodies.@@HaukesProjects
Great video. Thank you for all the information.
glad you got something out of it ...
Here is a fun little hack - Still using the USB to boot - Use a USB to SATA converter and an old laptop hard drive for your boot disk. If you can find an old disk with decent capacity, you even get some usable space for installing applications without eating into your storage.
interesting idea ...
Really clear. And so many aspects covered too. Thanks for sharing.
and there is more coming (as promised) - I just had a death in the family and need to reprioritize my time for a bit ... stay tuned, "Back up" and "rebuilding the array" is still in the works ...
I switched back when WD MyCloud stopped supporting my model when there was an important security update and their message was essentially "you get the security update, but we're done with firmware updates, buy a newer model." That made me realize, "yeah, I need to do this myself."
sounds awfully familiar ...
Good video for someone like me who is looking into running omv. 16:47 You forgot to hide them serial numbers
thanks for letting me know
I like XigmaNAS...
mergerfs not installing
hope it worked for you by now ...?
Great video, helped me a lot. Thank you
happy to hear it ... and there is more coming (as promised) - I just had a death in the family and need to reprioritize my time for a bit ... stay tuned, "Back up" and "rebuilding the array" is still in the works ...
@HaukesProjects my condolences. I hope you are all good.
@@dragonryder88 I appreciate it ... substantially "rearranges your life" for a while ... take care of & spend time with loved ones (you never how much longer you/they have)
Excelente video professor. Consegui configurar meu NAS. Videos relacionados a Proxmox, Open Media Vault e app Docker, são uma boa pedida.

This is a good tutorial.... while you did a lot that I perrsonally don't need or use. - mainly because of hardware limitations, but was exactly what I needed. Thanks
glad you got something out of it ... and there is more coming (as promised) - I just had a death in the family and need to reprioritize my time for a bit ... stay tuned, "Back up" and "rebuilding the array" is still in the works ...
"Thats ok... Roll with it" LMAO! Great video. I am lookig to defect from Truenas and you have helped me get closer.
sounds like a plan ...
This is the best guide I've found.
Thank you ... that means a lot to me. Feel free to spread the word (share it) far & wide ... ;-)

@@HaukesProjects exactly! Pros and cons, always. I find it amazing how easy it is to repair and customize it.
