My scale system secrets. I would love to share my scale system series with you. They are the simplest, most friendly and helpful scales that have accompanied me all my life. Our instrument is almost 10 cms bigger than a violin. We need solid techniques to maintain flexibility of the fingers, since we have to carry a heavy viola and bow. I believe that the following techniques serve this purpose...

the viola solo is under-miked, and too often lost in the crowd. AND there is NO EXCUSE for a violist of her stature to be reading from sheet music - she should be playing from memory! I was nowhere near her stature, and I ALWAYS played from memory!

What is more important, the music itself or whether one plays with sheet music or not? Some musicians play with sheet music because they are nervous, some because they were hired in the very last moment as replacements, some had emergencies preventing them from learning a piece by heart due to lack of practice time, etc. Why be so judgemental? Bringing this kind of expectations to a performance, you are automatically setting yourself up for disappointment.

This rendering full of temperament and warmth of spirit of Harold made my day today and showed the wonderful strength of the viola if played by an artist of the incredible stature of Nobuko Imai. Bravisimo.

I love this video and the helpful explanation! Maintaining the same hand position from first to nth position gives it a nice flow. I was so inspired, I started practicing immediately, which is a minor miracle. Thank you Nobuko!
