Welcome to Gypsy Dreamer Quilts! I'm using this space to share some videos of various techniques I use to quilt on my HandiQuilter Sweet Sixteen sit-down machine, as well as some technique videos for making One Block Wonder and Hexified Panel Quilts, made with 60 degree triangles.
I've been teaching quilt piecing technique classes and beginning free motion quilting classes for about 5 years. I enjoy sharing my passion and love when I see my students get that "light bulb" moment as they learn new ways to approach their projects. My quilting experience has been built through piecing and quilting hundreds of quilts from 8x10" mug rugs to 120x120" king size quilts. Being a sit-down machine quilter, everything is custom--even simple all-over designs. The quilt sandwich is moved under the needle either completely free motion or using a variety of rulers.

HPQ 4 Trim Top
The final step is to trim your top for quilting. Unless you add the extension pieces to each row of a background fabric to retain the points and allow them to "float", you will more than likely trim the points off and square up your top. There are those who will finish those points and bind them to have the zig-zag finish, so that's always an option. Adding additional borders, even pieced borders, can be a lovely finish. Make it your own!

HPQ 2 Sewing Rows
Просмотров 2496 месяцев назад
Once your rows are stitch, then it's time to sew them together into the long sections. Always match up the whole hexies to be sure the rows are in the right order. Place a pin close to the edge you plan to stitch so you don't mistakenly sew the wrong edge. Place a pin at each dog-ear intersection, making sure the dog-ears are lined up nicely. This will assure your center points of your hexies w...
HPQ 3 Insert Panel

@GypsyDreamerQuilts instructions for inserting a panel into a Hexified Panel Quilt layout. By making your surrounding hexies into four sections two long side sections and the top and bottom sections stitched together separately you can then adjust your panel to fit for the final stitching. Some may require a frame and other panels may need to be trimmed to fit. Don't do any trimming until this ...
HPQ 1 Row Assembly

Once your design is complete, it's time to pin your long rows together. Pin long rows for each side and pin the short rows above and below the panel into separate sections. This video shows how you sew the rows together.
Quilting orange peels in patchwork squares
Просмотров 2949 месяцев назад
Using my HandiQuilter Sweet Sixteen on the Insight table with regulated stitching on with cruise set at 16% and 11 SPI, in stitching orange peels in the red patches that create a chain diagonally across the quilt. By going across and back, I complete each diagonal chain in a continuous fashion. The 4" flag print blocks get curves in a similar manner that intersect at the center of the block.

The Magic of Making Half-Square Triangles with Triangulations
Просмотров 3952 года назад
Using the printable foundations in the Triangulations PDF files you can make hundreds of half-square triangles in nearly any size you need very quickly. Instead of cutting squares, marking each one, sewing on both sides of the center line, cutting, pressing, and trimming, these foundations short cut that whole process! For my current project I made 600 HSTs and was assembling units in two days....

Step by step process of making the GDQ Cleaners that Les has been making first for his sisters and later to give away at my quilting classes and at retreats. These are great for cleaning out your bobbin area and under the feed dogs of your machines. There is one included now with each GDQ 5.5" 60° triangle ruler. The stirrer straws can be purchased in a box of 5,000 from Costco or Sam's Club. L...
Quilting a Ribbon Braid on a Sit-down Machine
Просмотров 9202 года назад
A continuous quilting path is shown that is suitable for quilting any French Braid type quilt or, as shown here, a quilt made with award ribbons from years of dog shows. Initially I was skeptical of actually quilting the ribbons beyond stitching-in-the-ditch; however, talking about this quilt with a friend who had quilted something similar on her longarm assured me that it would work. I'm delig...
FMQ--Transfer design by stitching over lines
Просмотров 1042 года назад
Get fun or more complicated designs in your free motion quilting by printing a design from a pattern or the computer and then stitch over the lines. Once the paper is removed, you have a great quilting design that was simple! Always stitch at a shorter stitch length (remember you control the stitching length with FMQ if you don't have a stitch regulator) in order to perforate the paper for easy...

Cross-Hatching with Rulers on a sit-down midarm
Love this hexi panel quilt and you have clear instructions on how to do things. Is there a video on how to cut the panel into the Jexi shapes?? I just saw you online tonight for the first time, and you have some very interesting videos.
@@merrileewoodrick794, thank you! Yes, the longer video (about 20 minutes) is a whole overview that goes through the process from the beginning. It was created by Timeless Treasures Fabrics.
I really like the idea of the execute panel, but I do not see a video on how you cut a panel into the sixes to use??
Thank you! Yes, the Hexified Panel Quilt tutorial by Liz Granberg-Jerome is the overview from the beginning of the process.
I just got a 221 and it has the unmarked needle plate. However, it came with a screw-in metal guide. I purchased one of the seam gauge rulers with the holes for various seam allowances. I hope it will work well in placing the guide for a perfect scant 1/4" for piecing. I really don't want to use adhesives on the painted surface of the machine bed.
I love ❤ hexies!!! Thank you for sharing these great tips.
Do you have a video of the material and cutting?
Yes, check out the tutorial video in my playlist that was put together by Timeless Treasures. ruclips.net/video/QLRYs3ev23k/видео.html
Thank you
That is beautiful
Thank you!
I love how you show each stage of the sewing. Working on one of your Christmas kits.
I have used Triangulations for many years. It's nice to see an new things added to it!
Great tips for sewing the hexigons. Thank you for sharing. 😊🌹🍁
Do you have a video on making a pillow with the ribbons
I don't have a video on sewing with ribbons yet; however, I have plenty of ribbons left to make another project and will be sure to make a video when I get started! Stay tuned. :-)
This is soooo helpful!
Thank you! I try to come up with things that are out of the ordinary to share. :-)
Ingenious!
Love your tutorial! I think you have given me the best instructions for how to sew these hexies ❤️ Now I just need to learn how to cut them 🤔😀
Thank you! There's also one on cutting and the video I have linked from Timeless Treasures takes you through 90% of the process from cutting on!
Just started ruler work quilting. Enjoyed watching your video.
Great idea
Cool!
Such a time saver! Thanks for the great tutorial!
They are awesome! I love mine! Thank You!
Please ask Les to send a few to his cousin-in-law....thanks!
I've got you covered, cuz! <3
That is very clever!
I really love when you show your work on hq sweet six! What ruler foot are you using?
I replaced the original ruler foot for the Sure Foot, which is a little taller. Since adding it when I had the conversion kit installed so I could change feet easily, I haven't actually used any other foot!
Hi Ms Lizzie, once again you have come up with a unique guilting method That will work on any braided Table runners or quilts. Thank you for your demo.
Did you get the new Capri table. Your work is so awesome
Thank you! Yes! The Insight table that comes with the Capri also works with the Sweet 16. It was an upgrade that has been so worth it! I love it!!!
This is fantastic and so simple. Thanks
Thanks, Mary! Good thing because the final assembly also uses a partial seam! Parts & pieces are ready and I'll be recording the video this week for the 2nd Saturday. :-)
How do know the size of the set in center?
The set-in center can be any size you need. For this particular block it was a 4 1/2" square. Depending on what pattern you're using, the instructions will tell you what size to cut that center. I've even used this technique when sewing together random size blocks cut from t-shirts to get everything to fit. Once you know how to do it, you'll find places where this can be very handy!
Why is it called a New York block?
Excellent question! According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, "In 1907, Hearth & Home magazine asked readers to send blocks named after states, capital cities, and US territories." A photo or drawing was included and full size patterns were available to readers who mailed in a request with a coin or stamp.
This the first time I seen your videos. I love your slowed down very simple directions. I'm a beginner and you made this look so easy. Thank You ...
Hi Vicky, Thank you! As a beginning quilting teacher, I like to break things down for all levels. There will be more! Keep coming back!

Thank you for sharing I’m new to your channel . God bless you and your family
Great orientation tips to keep from losing one's way!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
I have a vintage Kenmore (1949) rotary straight stitch. It has a perfect 1/4" foot, and feed dogs (the middle feed dog is in front of the needle) pull straight an true. Nicely designed. It is my favorite piecing machine. It also has a machined aluminum seam guide that provides a perfect gate. Do all other fancy tasks on my newer machines. This machine does one thing and does it well,
HI Elle, That sounds like a wonderful machine! Many years ago my mom had a Kenmore, but it was replaced several times over the years. I wish some of those old machines had been stored away! The vintage machines last forever if taken care of. I believe the Featherweights also have an optional seam guide, but for now this works for me. :-) Our modern machines with multiple stitches & functions mostly sit in their cases unless we need a zig-zag or something special. :-)
How do I get your patterns for this quilt?
Hi Vicky, This is a BOM at my local shop that is already underway. It will be released as a complete pattern early next year after the BOM series is done. Watch for it in spring 2022. You can follow me on Facebook or sign up for my e-blast newsletter through my website GypsyDreamerQuilts.com Liz
😍😍
This is a great video, super clear instructions and useful tips! JUST SUBSCRIBED
I use the Scott’s double sided mounting tape. It comes in many widths and I run it all the way across my machine. You can sew blindfolded...lol.
We've used the mounting tape as well on our rulers! I like to have a piece of the molefoam padding and my husband likes the mounting tape as a guide on the bottom side of our triangle rulers when cutting the triangles for our Hexified Panel Quilts/One Block Wonders. I had not used it the machine, but will definitely keep it in mind, especially for my modern machines that are plastic. I like the molefoam for my vintage machine as I feel like/hope the adhesive that is engineered to be used on skin will be kinder to the finish on a Featherweight. :-) I like a longer guide as well, but usually not longer than the molefoam pad as it comes. :-)
I love to make such hexies. Some times it´s very surprising, what you get.
Thank you so much for the demonstration. Did you have to purchase an additional presser foot or can we use the foot that came with the sweet 16? Thank you
Hi Norma, as long as you have a closed foot for ruler work, you will be fine. I did purchase the Sure Foot, which is a little taller, so I'm less likely to let the foot jump over the ruler. It doesn't happen often, but can cause you to break a needle, chip the rule, and even throw your machine out of timing. ~Liz
Excellent video! Your hands are beautiful...and so is your voice. Thank you for sharing your talents.
What a great tutorial. So glad I found your website. Can't wait to try this concept. Thank you for sharing your technique.
Thanks so much! Keep checking back as I will be adding more videos along the way.
I liked that the directions you did give were clear … but was disappointed that you didn’t show how you cut your fabric so that you had all these coordinated pieces in the first place 😔. I can’t understand how you got all the same cut from on panel. 😕
Each step is a separate video. I'm working with projects that have been in the UFO bag, so are past the cutting stage. There will be a new video as soon as I start a new project. :-)
I, too, was disappointed to find this lack. I think this would make an awesome hand quilted piece. Is there somewhere you could tell us where to get these directions? I do love the clear and easy directions! Your camera Mas was great!
WOW! COOL!!!
What a Lovely Hummingbird Fabric and You are an Excellent Teacher! Thank you for the video!
Liz this is a great lesson. I wish I had pressed my seams open. Also I followed another video and trimmed all the dog ears so....... i will know next time😊
Everyone has their way of doing it. Obviously we like the way we do it. Learn from many and then take what you like and leave the rest. :-)
Yep. Good thoughts for quilting and life! Thanks for reaponding
Beautiful loved the fabrics print
That ruler is awesome. What is it called and where did u get it?
Hi Jennifer, are you referring to the 1/4" seam guide ruler? I had some made that I sell strictly at my workshops. There are several companies who make & sell them, plus we got one in a shop hop goodie bag as a gift. Look for 1/4" seam guide or seam allowance ruler. :-)
Thank you for helpful, clear instructions.
Great tutorial! I sill use your thread tail trick. Can't wait to see the next steps
I'm so glad that helps! There will be more videos of next steps, but we are finishing up some projects before we start new ones to video.
Thank you so much for demonstrating this on a sit down long arm! Hopefully you can demonstrate more techniques.
Hi Liz, I’m looking forward to watching.
Did a great job explaining. Thanks
