Videos on GPS apps and digital mapping: OsmAnd, Custom Maps, OpenStreetMap, and whatever else I find of interest.
This is a post-retirement hobby after 30 years as a technical writer, based on a fascination with digital cartography coupled with a bad sense of direction. And it's some form of payback for the many useful tutorials here on RUclips that have helped me do everything from install a kitchen faucet to tie a Bangladeshi lungi.

So when you import a track you don’t get turn by turn by directions but when you create one with the app you do? Can you create a route and a track, and/or convert between the two with the app? Can you display both a route and a track at the same time?
Me quedo igual!!!
Also this I think it should be added to OsmAnd Basic Playlist... to be easy to find and view
Nice guides you make ... but why this is not added to par example OsmAnd 4.x Basics playlist? ... to be easy find.. (you can remove the version and Phone type from video and Playlist names,( or put them in brackets for reference only) as are not very relevant...
Excellent Tutorial. When sharing a route to Organic Maps you get 2 gpx files. 1 for the route points and another for the path. Is there a way to delete the route points in OSMAND and still keep the gpx route?
I don't think so. When I created a route using Plan a Route, I could delete the intermediate points (between the start and finish), but that can potentially change the route.
exactly what I was having trouble with, thanks for the video!
I was stumbling and stuck on how to get turn by turn navigation from a GPX file, much appreciated. Thank you.
Glad the video helped. Before the developers improved it, this was a lot harder.
All your vids are spot on. Enough information and concise. Wish I'd have found these earlier Thanks
Why would anybody want to export a profile to a phone contact? Exporting something normally goes to a drive...
Are you referring to something in the video?
Another useful tutorial, short and to the point. Thanks!
excellent info. thanks
Honeslty, I did not like using this app; not stable and not user friendly.
excellent tutorial, exactly the way things need to be shown and explained, looking forward to your other videos, I liked and subbed.
Excellent primer, thanks for your effort!

Excellent video - thanks!
Mr. Bart, Thank you very much for the tutorial of offline OsmAnd Maps!
Hi! I would like to know if there is a way to improve the use of OsmAnd app which would notify users by screen flashing, vibrating or maybe sending warning to an external device which would sit in user's pocket when user is approaching to waypoints specified inside a ?.gpx file. Here's why: when riding a motorcycle during sunny days the mobile screen reflects the sunshine and it is hard to see a waypoints on display and riders can't hear the phone's sounds. I guess screen flashing would be the best way to warn/notify riders. It would be nice if OsmAnd would let users decide the proximity of the warning, number of flashes, light's intensity, speed and color of flashes. So far I liked OsmAnd app for navigation. If it could display warnings as I described it would be great because available voice prompts are kind of useless. I would like the OsmAnd to display flash notification when approaching specified waypoints without the need to be in Navigation mode. I load the ?.gpx track with waypoints and go for a ride and change the route on the go so route navigation is not needed. Can it be done or does the user have to enter navigation mode? It's kind of inconvenient when a group of riders change the route plan maybe few times during the group ride but specified waypoints(speed cameras) are a constant and expensive to ignore. here's example of data inside ?.gpx file: <wpt lat="gpslocation" lon=" gpslocation "> <name>Name</name> <desc>Address</desc> </wpt> Kind regards
You can direct feature suggestions to the OsmAnd developers on Github: github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/discussions/categories/ideas
Helpful! Thank you.
OsmAnd, like OSM, is pretty deep, feature-rich, hence steep learning curve.
Agreed.. The two often go together: more features = steeper curve
thank you for making a GREAT video.
I’m glad you liked it.
I've decided to try to learn OsmAnd, but there is, as they say, a steep learning curve. Your video was very useful for helping me get into it. And you also gave a really good tip: Look in the Help menu. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Nice job. Learning OSMAND takes more than a little effort, but that effort is rewarding.
Thanks! And I agree.
Very useful app! Is any procedure to view more than one map? I mean I have map tiles and I can select only one map to see Ty!
I know what you mean about the convenience of viewing more than one map at a time. But no, only a single map can be shown.
Fantástic.Video. Can you use this app without Internet conection? Thanks
Thanks! And yes, once you've downloaded the maps and other layers you're going to use, you don't need a connection. I've used OsmAnd for off-trail backpacking way off the grid.

Hello, thanks for the video. I wonder a bit "Mount Wittenberg" .... in my location exist a small town called "Wittenberg Lutherstadt" (east germany district Saxony Anhalt) :) Can you tell me what type of I phone you use, beause I would like change from OSMAND Android phone to I phone, maybe if you can recommendation which is optimal I phone, I prefer a display size between 5-6 inch and a good/big accu capacity.
Hi. I’m glad you like the video. I use an iPhone 13 Mini because Iike small phones. But Osmand should run on all Apple phones so the optimal one is the phone you like best. Note that the iOS version of OsmAnd is different than the Android version, although the two are becoming more alike with every update.
@@barteisenberg thanks for your answer. In OSMAND Android I have all my favorites in a single gpx file (called fovourites.gpx in net.osmand folder). Can you tell me is that about favourites in OSMAND iOS the same gpx file i.e. if I copy that file from Android=>iOS?
That’s a good question and I don’t have an answer. Looking online, I haven’t found anything so far that says it will work.
It's possible; I did it. I emailed favourites.gpx from an Android phone, received it on an iPhone, and opened the attached file using OsmAnd. The points I had on the Android showed up on the iPhone.
@@barteisenberg Great news, many thanks Bart, happy weekend ;)
Thank you for the tutorial!
👍
Thank you for this
👍
Does anyone know why when I record my hike the gpx track records as several broken red lines instead of one continuous one?
If the broken lines are randomly spread out, the problem might be with the precision of your phone GPS. If they are aligned in a route, but broken, it may have to do with your recording settings on OsmAnd. Do you have any other app on the same device that you could record a GPX and compare the results?
touring does not emphasize trails. Off-road does IOS
I agree. The Off-road style, which is based on Topo, wasn’t available when I made the video. Do you think he video is still useful, or is it out of date?
@@barteisenberg yes it’s useful. Thanls
Thanks Bart. Excellent information as usual.
Thanks Barry. I was happy to see OsmAnd add the ability to “snap” a GPX to the underlying map. Previously, people assumed that would happen and were unhappy and/or confused when it didn’t.
Brilliant video Bart. The most useful and clear tutorial I have seen on this subject. Nice job!
Thanks!
is OsmAnd the Custom Maps equivalent for iphone? Im looking for a georeferencing location map app like this for iphone
Custom Maps is the only app I've seen that allows you to georeference a map within the app itself. Custom Maps only runs on Android.
Your tutorials are clear and concise. Thank you for your effort!
This is a great instruction. Thank you!
Traditionally, OSMAND and other apps cannot perform turn-by-turn navigation very well on imported GPX tracks. That's because it navigates the line without matching it with the map. It results in many many unnecessary and irritating "turn slightly right/left" instructions (especially on winding roads). This video describes that phenomenon and tries to circumvent it (from 1:47). HOWEVER!!! This problem is SOLVED in OSMAND itself in the newest version! I have been wanting this feature for many years and it's finally there (I don't know when it was introduced exactly, I just recently discovered it. Possibly from 4.0?). After choosing a GPX track and tapping the navigation button, you need to tap the name of the track where it says: "follow track". In the next screen you can choose "Reverse track direction" if needed and right below that, there is a new option called "Attach to the roads". If you don't see that option, choose "Select another track" and reload it. I tested it and it works like a charm. For me, this is a godsend because now I can turn off the screen and solely use the voice navigation. Which is very nice on my moped.
Wow--I'll definitely give this a try. Thanks!
@@barteisenberg If you succeed, I hope you will spread the word. The contributors are too modest. It has been a difficult feature to built according to the comments on github issue #3908. It took several years apparently.
@@dolfgoog I think a good test would be to take the GPX I used in the video, use your method, and see how well it navigates. If it looks good, this video is out of date and another would be in order. Which would be great--the method I describe here is at best a kludge. Can't get to this immediately, but it's in my queue.
@@barteisenberg I considered the word "cumbersome" for your method but I found it to be unfriendly for your good efforts 🙂... Yes indeed, that's exactly what I did with my own GPX's. It's awesome although not flawless but I will report those quirks. I chose a small threshold (5m instead of default 50m), otherwise it can choose wrong roads. I am quite convinced you will deprecate your workaround very soon. I would suggest that you make a new video when your schedule allows it.
@@barteisenberg Also, I would like to inform you that I created a post on Reddit for this feature. Apparently I am not allowed to put a link here. My comment was removed by RUclips completely without any notice or explanation (not very userfriendly way of doing). So I will only say that it's in r/OsmAnd community and the title is: "Latest versions of OSMAND creates much better turn-by-turn voice instructions on imported GPX".
Thank you for another helpful OSMand tutorial. I'm loving the app, but all of the features ensures that there is much more for me to learn.
I'm glad you liked. And I agree: like most advanced programs, OsmAnd has a significant learning curve.
Will this work on an Oppo Find X3 Lite smart phone?
I assume that the Android version of OsmAnd will run on any Android phone. But that’s just an assumption.
Once again, I'm impressed with the enormous capabilites and flexibility of OsmAnd, and I'm grateful to those who developed and support this wonderful app.
I agree. The developers are amazing.
Thank you for helping us get the most out of OsmAnd.
Hi Bart, can you confirm, that it is still working on latest OSMAnd? I'm struggling to implement your steps, but no luck... :/ Already checked result file of mapc2mapc in Locus and it is working fine.
I'm happy to. I'll try to get to it in the next few days.
@@barteisenberg I'd be glad.
I think I'm seeing what you're seeing. I generated a sqlite file, but I can't see it on OsmAnd either as an underlay or overlay layer. Is that your experience, as well?
Now I've got it, at least in theory. I regenerated the sqlite file just using one zoom level--13. And zoomed in on the area. I also disables/enabled the plugin "Online maps", though I'm not sure that did anything. Further research probably needed.
Ha! That's interesting... I tried your solution. Although it is only one zoom level, it displays my generated map. What do you reckon - is it a bug of this version of Osmand? Discussion on github was started about that by me: github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/discussions/11735 but no one shared my experiences. I could post a message there for others of what was discovered by you.
Gps location is not map boundary
hello Mr Bart i'd like to start my website that helps moroccan hikers for safe trips but i still cant find the path to start this journey can you please provide me help thanks in advence
Hi. Are you referring to a path that's already on OpenStreetMap. Or a path that you think should be on OpenStreetMap, but isn't? Or are you asking how to put OpenStreetMap maps on your website? Or how to determine which paths are safe?
@@barteisenberg I'll try to start with actual paths on OSM and after ill see if I can add mine too thank you for the fast response, I'm afraid of not finding the guidance
For actual paths on OSM, I think you'd want to walk them to make sure they meet your criteria of safety. That's the only way to be sure. For adding new paths, my video shows the basic process: you walk the route with a GPS, upload the GPX, trace it, and tag it. OpenStreetMap's beginner guides are extensive and found here: wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide. The best editor to start with is ID, which can be accessed from the OSM page itself once you've registered.
@@barteisenberg thank you so much for your time I really appreciate that. I'll try my best to understand everything needed
I'm happy to help. One other English language web page might be of use: www.alltrails.com/morocco. AllTrails is a service in which people identify and describe hikes they like. So like OpenStreetMap itself, it's crowd-sourced. The information is only as good as the people who contribute it.
Many thanks
