    That's great to see the match from a competitors perspective. I also messed up BIG in the 3rd match. I had that .875" dimension starting from a different plane than it should have been. Never caught onto that. I now have a workflow setup that does not penalize me with any additional time to double check for that. Till the next one, man!

    Hey! Did I miss the part where we were suppose to readjust the dimensions of the parts? (I remember you saying the client would come with some new specifications/details). Asking because currently (from previous videos), the wheel has a 25mm width while the distance to both P03 is 33mm (25mm from the top bracket + 4mm on each side of width of the bracket).

    Hey, I have a question setting the dimension radius on 28:44. Ticking the "Dimension radius" led us to having the pattern being over defined. I'm wondering if this was the correct way of doing it? (Dealing with the over defined issue later) or was there a better way? I tried not checking that option but ended up having issues going from the pattern being under defined to fully defined. Thank you! This has been great so far!

    • @FullyDefined-Design

      @@sbarrios93 hey, I believe the over defined issue is explained at 29:45. The better way to do this is not to tick that “dimensioned radius” box. Good job Chris. Multibody workspace in Solidworks is great. Your design turned out pretty well. Nice tip with printing in 45degrees angle. Creates less support and easy removal. I would use M5 cap screws for mounting the power board to the 3d printed bracket by having 2x M5 tapped holes instead of the mushroom protrudes.

    Extremely useful - about the most informative SolidWorks top down assembly modelling tutorial I've ever seen. I've now a good idea now how it can actually be quite flexible. My expertise is in dynamic modelling using what was the old Cocreate OneSpace Designer, now Creo Elements Direct - I'm now involved with DesignSpark Mechanical a subset of SpaceClaim functionality but no longer do professional freelance designing - my specialist knowledge was in the design and manufacture of complicated Optical Systems - Thank you! Copying CAD models ain't the same as original concept design. What's very clear is more time is spent on locking down a sketch than anything else which is exactly the opposite of creative free flowing design in my book where the focus is on the actual necessity of the feature or even the part itself rather than fully defining a sketch. I can see the value of parametric part modelling for complex moldings, but for white page ( blue sky) modelling where almost nothing is validated until a design is finished then parametric isn't for me. I can see the benefit of rule based design with perfect defined sketches at the detail stages for users of the file who weren't it's creator. A final design is a succession of qualitative and quantitative decisions which need revisiting over and over until an optimised solution emerges.

    • @timheeney2060

      Having said all that, first time about 25 mins, second time 16 mins - productivity in modelling is always important and seeing how others do it is always a good idea. - thanks for the video.

    • @timheeney2060
      @timheeney2060 Месяц назад

      First time it took 25 minutes, second time 16 minutes. So there's value in challenging your productivity methods of modelling. Quick question. The website that these models come from the guy is using IronCAD - so will that really push Solidworks users to complicated modelling techniques?

    • @FullyDefined-Design
      @FullyDefined-Design Месяц назад

      hey @@timheeney2060 thanks for watching! Love your comments. I 100% agree, copying CAD models and speed challenges like this are totally different from a Product Designer's typical workflow. What I've found beneficial from taking part in these challenges is discovering new methods to create simple features and time saving tips that have greatly improved my efficiency. Spending less time in CAD lets me focus more on the design I am creating. I also think the type of modelling (parametric or otherwise) used is impacted by the product's one is designing. I work for a company where we use a lot of rugged, geometric shapes. Locking down early concepts with defined sketches is important for control and to see where the creativity can flow. TooTallToby uses all types of CAD, but is a CSWE (SolidWorks) and Certified Onshape Pro as well. Even though it's not for me, there is still value in seeing what other software can achieve and how. I have a new video coming soon showing a detailed concept design from scratch - I hope you'll like it

    • @timheeney2060
      @timheeney2060 Месяц назад

      @@FullyDefined-Design Well, then, i'll look forward to that detailed concept design concept. I'm biased against parametrics believing them to be to creative restrictive perhaps because I don't plan ahead too well and also I keep refining, refining refining... which always involves my last brain bulb-on moment, rather than my first ' let's start like this... Thanks for outlining the CAD TooTallTony uses - IronCAD I couldn't get on with, but that was twenty years ago now! Onshape, well that's parametric, I tried it, but it's not for my chaotic mind. Certainly Solidworks has some very productive tools that I just don't have. Reading everything back, I come over as a lecturing prig. Sorry I do that. All I really care about is getting the design finished pronto - a bit of considered forethought before frantic modelling is always the best decision for me at least. I used to design in 2D, defining the assembly concept in functional sections showing all the mating and clearance conditions. 3D modelling is a little more tricky either giving me too much visual information or hiding just exactly what I want to focus on.

      I was using support-pla for the interfaces (making it easier to remove supports). After the tool head travels or purging the filament, some residual material may still be left on the nozzle. The block is called the prime tower. Enabling the prime tower can clean up the residue on the nozzle and stabilize the chamber pressure inside the nozzle, to avoid appearance defects when printing objects.
