Guyana SPEAKS was co-founded in the UK by Juanita Cox and Rod Westmaas in 2017. Prior to Covid-19 their events were held at Tafawa Ntune's banqueting suite, The Classic in Tooting Bec. Since lockdown in 2020 their events have been held via Zoom on the last Sunday of every month (from 2pm London time) and are now attracting members of the Guyanese diaspora from all over the world. Their events aim to educate, entertain, and inspire, while showcasing the richness of Guyanese culture. They hope in doing so to celebrate Guyana's diversity and to function as a platform where the 'Guyaspora' (the Guyanese Diaspora) can come together as one.
Guyana SPEAKS: The art of Arlington Weithers - Sunday, 29th October 2023
This Guyana SPEAKS event took place on 29th October 2023 via Zoom and featured New York based Guyanese artist, Arlington Weithers.
Born in 1948, Arlington Weithers is a Guyanese-born painter famous for his large, vividly colored works. Weithers uses heavy paint applied thickly to create textural cracks within the brilliant color schemes of his painting. He, like many contemporary Caribbean artists, eschews the typical tropical or colonial landscape paintings. Weithers’ artistic talent was originally recognized at a young age when a teacher wrongly accused him of copying a drawing, rather than making it himself. After studying art in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital, he moved to New York City i...

" DID BURNHAM FAILED THE PEOPLE OR DID THE PEOPLE FAILED BURNHAM " Feed , cloth & house OURSELVES check how the people of China achieved this and is now standing strong. While Guyana's strongest, wisest, most sincere committed truest leader FORBES BURNHAM got lots of unnecessary internal fights against success from many selfish Guyanese "Guyanese parasites" that did every or anything to sabotage Burnham's wise, united, strategic plans & actions FOR ALL THE PEOPLE OF GUYANA & HER ALLIES as a whole. Long live Hon.Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.May He CONTINUE TO RIP. Long live One people, one nation, One Destiny , Burnham words to the wise " PITTY THE NATION THAT DOESN'T grow its food , wear its own cloths , build its own home. Burnham's failure was the people who looks like HIM who joined with " anything" to destroy HIS STRATEGIC FUTURISTIC WORKABLE , INSPIRATION , ASPIRATIONS , POSITIVE GOALS AND ACTIONS to make All Guyanese live in love UNITY & PROSPERITY. BUT Time has been , Is and WILL TELL. HIS SOUL ,VISIONS & DREAMS LIVES ON.
Lies and more Lies. Who is "we". You were starving yet so Strong today? All who lived through the Colonial era can attest to the fact that Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was a nationalist who made a sterling contribution to the development of this land we know as Guyana. Persons who describe him as a dictator do so with the intention of keeping this country divided along racial lines for selfish reasons. .
This is very interesting. I'm a young adult in Guyana and throughout my life I have only heard of my parents speak of these parties but their views were heavily shrouded by their ethnic bias. Our textbooks also never went into details of these political situations so this was very enlightening
Ban goods, what a disaster mr forbes was.
🇬🇾♥️🇬🇾♥️🇬🇾♥️ Proud of my heritage
This guy is a racist man and jackass
Linden Burnham was a good thinker, extraordinary visionary but his down fall was an obsession with power.Comparative to Dr Myles Munroe who was a leader that built other leaders,LFS wanted power for himself.A great difference.
Absolute nonsense that most Afro-Guyanese were Congregationalists. Certainly in Georgetown, congregants could be Anglican, Catholic, or belong to other smaller denominations like the Pilgrim Holiness or the Scottish Presbyterian.

Greetings to you from Guyana . I've really enjoyed this video. Congratulations to professor Linden Lewis on the writing of this book. Thanks Ms Cox for putting this together. We, particularly Guyanese need to examine our history objectively and with the coming of this book should enable us to examine the man through a different lens. Mr Burnham was the man who implemented the National Insurance Scheme(NIS) in 1969 which was greatly opposed by his opposition leader Dr. Cheddi Jagan of the PPPC. From since that time, all those PPPC leaders who are/were beneficiaries of the NIS! I have to get my hands on this book.
Good morning Rod and Juanita, We have just viewed your Empire video, in full. I enjoyed the Guyanese history lesson. My mum remembers Brown Betty and There was a naughty boy and a naughty boy was he. Smile.
Dr Walter Rodney of SOAS, the School of Oriental and African Studies London, great campaigner and academic, murdered in his prime
Guyana needs a Chinese settlement
We can see that this writer is one of Burnham haters his writings is based on propaganda
Moist of what you people are talking about is share propaganda
There is no proof that Burnham ever rigged elections this is just propaganda which was circulated by his enemies Therefore writers must stop writing and saying that Burnham rigged elections as though it is a fact
Immigration question, an irony; Education President, "Free" Education; Father of the Nation: 1966 (& 1970) Defence of the nation - Venezuela-Guyana Row; Emigration from Guyana incresed from the mid-1950's to England during the colonial era; Self-help in house-building; Planting and gardening have always been a part of Guyanese life; Negative impact of sugar worker's and rice farmer's Stricks on the health of the Guyanese people? Carifesta; Death?😮 Nationalism and Patriotism; Cheddi hadn't a chance as premier - not Prime Minister - in 1957 to 1964, Guyana's being still a colonial child of England with a governor from Britain; Linden's bias against Burnham, not unlike mine, may be founded on Burnham's reported orchestration of the assassination of Dr. Walter Rodney 😮😢 Question Was Burnham's Pan-African slant inferior to or superior to his apparent egocentricism?😮😢😅
Burnham? Right place, right time; Cheddi, a weak opposition, led by his wife Janet; 63? Heavy smoker! Backed by U.S.A. & U.K. (Linden has done a research and doesn't know about the Protocol of Port of Spain, spearheaded in 1970 by Dr. Eric Williams of Trinidad!) Janet Rosenberg-Jagan, greatest ideological influence on Burnham; Janet Rosenberg-Jagan was/is the primary face of the socioeconomic (and racist) shape of Guyana; More Donald J Trump than Papa Doc. 2.5**: mediocre research and very poor analysis 😮😢😅
Lady Burnham brings the country to shit band flour band all imports children died from malitristion he say eat what you grow he was a monster in my opinion people were locked up for selling bread and flour ..the people who speak highly of him is the ppl who benefit from his time

What did Burnham do with the money from the sales of the railway from Rosighnol to Parika in Guyana . He took the money from England over 54 million british pounds that were for the East Indian.
African slaves were in Guyana 200 years before you, East India, came to Guyana. Slave labor is what built Guyana, where is money to pay descendants of African slaves for their free labor in Guyana?
Being in a country before anyone else is irrelevant. Reparations for the African brothers and sisters has nothing to do with East Indians,Chinese,Portuguese or Indigenous Folks. That has to be dealt with by the Western Europeans who committed these terrible crimes.@josephwinslow7613
54 million pounds back in those days, Boy Burnham could have bought the United Kingdom.......

Why all these folks who talk about Burnham live outside of guyana. Those days we were starving and they call that glorious day .Burnham just wanted power
He was not killing or fighting his own family members over land, property, insurance, money and material things like people like you. And since he dead for over 36 years, you and your kind has not change your ways because you are still greedy.

Proof it. Plus, no other races of Guyanese are as greedy as East Indian Guyanese. Bribery is part of your culture. Fighting and killing for land, property, money and other material things are part of your culture, even if it is means fighting and killing your own family members.
