Her father changed his last name, but their first names were Spanish and their census records are weird and begin in 1850. The DNA tells the rest of the story (Iberian and Mayan). What I do know is that my g3 abuelo arrived in Ohio from a business trip in California in 1850. He was an attorney, witty socialite, and gentleman farmer. Also, do not forget their surroundings. My brother moved to NM at the border of Texas and he’s been working a lot with first, second and third Mexican-American generations. Let’s not forget the other component that allows this which is erosion of the public trust. There used to be a time in this country when one job, regardless of what it was, could buy you a house, send kids to school, and allow you to retire with dignity, but that’s not happening now. The big companies put more money in their CEO pockets and gouge the poor for their products. People get rich stripping on OnlyFans or scamming people for crypto while regular people who work for a living get peanuts. All that erodes the soul of America. People don’t believe that paying into the system is worth it. They see Trump say “I don’t pay taxes cuz I’m smart.” And they say, “ehh, you can’t argue with success.
