A word about this video: Catholics believe in working hard at committing oneself to having a good marriage. And we believe in valuing human life. But the Church keeps struggling with how to handle the sometimes terrible predicaments that human beings can be in -- whether in a violent marriage or in a world where there can be violence. To help the Church until he returns again in glory Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to the Church at Pentecost....and said that what the Church he was founding on the faith of St. Peter would last until he returned in glory....And so we say that the Holy Spirit didn't just create the Bible....but that the Holy Spirit is still working today....and so we pray and debate and use the Bible and also the long history of men and women trying to follow Jesus in the Church try to figure out how to follow Jesus in our complicated world with the help of the Holy Spirit. SO -- if Jesus says not to kill....but we look at how to handle a violent country that tries to invade a peaceful country -- well, I believe w the help of the Holy Spirit the Church came up w the Just War theory....how to carefully handle war as a Christian. And then with marriage -- one might look at a young person who married a person who later became violent or mistreated that person. And we CAREFULLY looked at how to think that situation through so that a person in a violent/very bad marriage situation did not have to live a life being abused all their life OR so that if they did leave that bad marriage situation they did not have an option to remarry -- so that they didn't have to live like a monk or nun the rest of their lives. // In the end all of this is very tame material from a very traditional priest. And none of this is anything that should surprise a modern person of faith who has actually dealt w soldiers going off to war OR someone who has been through an abusive marriage. // Indeed: Would anyone but a small part of our population tell a brother or a sister who was in the military that they should quit the military because Jesus said not to kill? No. And would anyone tell their daughter who was stuck in an abusive marriage to continue to be mistreated over and over? NO. And would they insist that if she did leave the guy -- say at the age of 25 she gets out of that marriage -- that she could never marry again -- after a divorce and annulment -- to try to finally find someone who will treat her right? NO. // Peace and God bless everyone -- Fr. Andy, the fellow in the video. P.S. -- this video was posted by a young adult from one of my two parishes back in early Oct 2021, I only first looked at the COMMENTS yesterday....38 mos later. I won't be looking again at the comments. God bless again.

Thank you for this. I am a catholic convert. I was in an abusive marriage. I should have walked away much earlier than I did. My priest was very supportive. But I just kept thinking that if I tried hard enough. Prayed hard enough. Became the most perfect catholic wife and never complained I'd be able to stop the abuse. I was also terrified of offending or displeasing God by getting a divorce. Some of the comments on here are not charitable at all. They make me sad.

Annulment applies in only a couple of situations - 1) the marriage was invalid aka Catholics run off and get married by a Protestant minister or you never got married in a church aka the Justice of the Peace - 2) there was a death of a spouse that’s pretty much it

That isnt true there are many reasons for annulment. I am a convert. I was granted an annulment on the grounds of capacity, and consent. Neither my ex or I had been raised catholic. I was 18 when I got married and he was 27. It was under duress. I had no money or home and he needed a green card. I did not have the capacity to make a decision like that.

@ what you said about being a non Catholic applies to point #1 no sacramental marriage aka invalid in the eyes of the church and consent idk you showed up that day and stood in front of someone or an altar I am glad you received and the church approved, but truth is you got married but not in front of a Catholic priest and didn’t go thru the marriage prep the church requires which makes the marriage invalid, according to Canon Law

@@NathanMiller-p3o @NathanMiller-p3o the annulment was not granted because of improper form (being married in a prot church or something similar or not going through pre cana). The catholic church doesn't automatically annul natural marriages.

So you're saying God is not powerful enough, to forgive the sin of divorce? There is only one unforgivable sin and that is the denial of God in the first place. A large part of Martin Luther's problem with the Catholic Church was their demanding of money to make sin go away.

The annulment thing didn't work out for me. I had relocated twice in the last ten years, and I am from a broken family, therefore, when my witnesses refused to come forward, I didn't have sufficient replacements. The secretary for the Marriage Tribunal for the Archdiocese, the same one that this priest belongs to, sent me an email saying that if I didn't have at least three witnesses who had known me for at least five years, there "was nothing they could do for me." After my wife told me she felt "disrespected" by the process, I withdrew my petition and left the church, becoming a Presbyterian (my wife's denomination). I have no respect for the Marriage Tribunal, or the work they do, as they meddle in affairs that are none of their business. I also think that Catholicism has a questionable future in mainstream, postmodern America; the church, going forward, will likely be made up of older, socially conservative critics of everything that is going on around them. They have a major image problem.

If it’s not in the early church at all for the first few hundred before the Council of Nicaea, be skeptical. I am not aware of a single early Christian who supported and taught annulments but am aware of tons of them who warned about remarriage in great detail. The Catholic Church has sadly changed severely after the Vatican II, to the point now where only 2% of annulments asked for are denied. They should be ashamed of themselves for not staying true to the words of the Christ and the early church father’s traditions. It should instead be flipped to the point where somewhere around 2% of the annulments are granted and the vast majority denied. Holding someone’s hand through adultery is not love and considering a priest to have the same level of authority as Jesus’s words is idolatry (along with the entire consensus of the early church fathers on His word).

Regarding justifiable war, Revelation 2:9. Israel is the fake Jew the Palestinians are the real Jew in hiding as Muslims as explicitly explained by Hosea. Evidence for the Israeli being the fake Jewish Genesis chapter 10. The Ashkenazi belong to Gomer son of Jepheth the Hebrews belong to Ham as the grandchildren of Cana Noah's most favorite granddaughter. She explained to Noah about Hind Rajab and the girl Cana was so distraught by her Holy Spirit induced vision of Israel committing identity fraud and tried to explain to Noah but she didn't have the words in her language to explain real Jew versus fake Jew when the real Jew was hiding as something she didn't understand what it was and that the fake Jew was claiming to follow the same God of her grandfather and herself. No we're trying to placate his granddaughter caught on the most high who visibly appeared to Noah and talked with Noah to assuage the child to explain to her that yes Palestinians will be harmed but in the end Israel will have an unconditional surrender because the Torah itself shows you of the great crime of Israel for which Isaiah tells you of the divorce of Israel Isaiah telling you that the inheritance and the blessing belongs to the Palestinians called Hebrews not to the Israelis called Jews again because he did not have the words in his language available to explain the idea of the Ukrainian Mafia impersonating the Hebrews through the process of creating an instrument and financing World war I and World war II because Archduke Ferdinand said I will not help you destroy the Hebrews I will fight for Palestine to be safe if Palestine is attacked by the Ashkenazi. And for this comment he made in private he was assassinated. The same thing happened with the leader of Turkey because of the same Ashkenazi committing coup d'etat across multiple allied nations of Palestine in order to help the Israelis. The monarchy of the United Kingdom is explicitly involved as co-conspirators before or after and during the fact on a multi-generational level. Because the English one of the resources of Palestine to be shared with them as promised by the Ukrainian Mafia. The same Ukrainian Mafia that Russia is fighting against in Ukraine at this time. Because the German nationalist socialist Zionist party is the n a z i I mean Ashkenazi it's ignorantly obvious. Play even told you who they was.... In the hopes that everyone was so ignorant of the scripture let the land deed and title in perpetuity for Palestine is found in Genesis chapter 10 the land deed for Palestine is found in the Torah making Moses himself Hamas making the Torah itself Hamas making all the Prophets of the Most High be Hamas by default. Because the entire Bible repetitively shows you and tells you of the penalty for attacking the Holy Land called Palestine. For multiple thousands of years the collections of the great prophets of Palestine have been collected together called the Bible. All of them have tried to explain to you the great evil that comes from the fake Jew the fake Hebrew those who claim to be but without wanting to racially be identified as. The people who hate the people they claim to be so much that they will pretend to be the people they hate just to kill the people they hate with the hopes that the rest of the world would be too ignorant of the scripture to understand the blatant obviousness of it.

According to the literal word: to remarry after divorce is adultery unless the divorce is because of adultery. In which case the one who did commit adultery if remarrying is committing adultery. The one who did not commit adultery if the divorce was for adultery remarry someone else who was never married then it's not adultery but if the person who did not commit adultery did marry someone who did commit adultery then even though they did not commit adultery in the first marriage it is still adultery for the second one because the spouse committed adultery prior to the marriage. This is no way has any bearings on virginity. Assuming that the divorce with adultery was post consummation to begin with. It's not required to be a virgin play tradition in good sense and is the best plan for long-term survival of marriages. There is another acceptable and that is abandonment but if either party gets remarried is adultery for them and the third new partner but if they remarry each other later and come back together it is not adultery for them to remarry each other. Regardless of if either one committed adultery for the initial divorce if the original to remarry it cannot be adultery even against the third party that caused the second marriage. It's actually very simple.

Hi Father Andy. One much overlooked reason that divorce must be allowed for adultery, is that sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) can spread from guilty partners to innocent ones. This is why the biblical penalty for adultery was being stoned to death. Clearly it was unjust to force an innocent partner to take back their unfaithful spouse and go back to playing Russian roulette with an adulterer whose lifestyle is like a loaded gun. If ever God's laws penalize the innocent, they cease to be God's laws. This opens a whole new context in (John 8:11), where Jesus says to the prostitute woman caught in adultery, "neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more". I'm a scientific Theist, and what I'd like to say is this. Jesus didn't condemn her in order to show his compassion. Compassion's fair enough, but simply saying, "go and sin no more" is insufficient. Justice has a greater context to fulfil than just having compassion for sinners. In releasing this woman with such a weak admonishment Jesus released a ticking time-bomb into Jewish society. He must have known that if she was infected, she would infect scores of other adulterers who would then infect their own families. Persons like her are called "disease vectors" today. Thanks to science, we now have antibiotics that enable us to control these infections and we send the sufferers to the doctors, just as Jesus once sent them to the priest. (Mostly). Unfortunately antibiotic resistant bacteria will return us to the days when simply saying "go and sin no more" is not enough. I'd suggest the catholic church needs to go into the science affecting this issue. Please keep working on the moral issues Father Andy, because the rights and wrongs of it, and marriage, were not set in stone 2000 years ago. Cheers, P.R.

Not too long ago, I was trying to become Catholic. I quit because of this issue. I married someone who I shouldn’t have back in the 90’s; ten years after my separation, I met my wife; we’ve been happily together for 15 years now. Last year, after becoming interested in converting to Catholicism, I was shocked to learn about the church’s teachings on divorce and remarriage, and that my marriage was “irregular.” Desiring to convert, I began a case with the local Archdiocese. Ultimately, they were unable to find my former domestic partner, and none of my witnesses came forward. They told me that my former D.P. had to be located, and that I had to find at least three witnesses who had known me for at least five years. Since I have relocated twice since 2014, I didn’t have what they were asking for. They told me that my case could not proceed, and that it would be moved to “non-pending” status. They also advised me to consult with a priest about “alternatives,” which I would assume would mean either leaving my current marriage (never!!!) or forcing a vow of celibacy on my wife. I chose to leave and become a Lutheran. Shortly thereafter, my wife had a stroke. I believe that if I had acted according to Catholic doctrine, my wife today would be be either dead, or severely mentally impaired, as I would not have been there to help her. If the God of Catholicism is the true God, they are the living embodiment of malevolence, for the Catholic God prioritizes judgment over love

The RCC has no authority to do this n what Jesus taught on divorce n remarriage is already in line with holy spirit n the holy spirit is not going to bend the rules for the RCC. There is only one holy spirit n all must obey. But there is no such thing as infallibility where a church makes its own rules n thinks that it is guided by the holy spirit.

@ Actually, the condition of needing a tribunal already assumes the marriage valid until the marriage is found invalid by the tribunal. In other words, you are never free to remarry until the tribunal gives nullity. We 100% need a Ecumenical Council on what is a marriage. It should be a universal ruling, not one prone to bias where one tribunal can be more or less liberal/conservative than another. The book “Shattered Faith” is a great example of the need of the Ecumenical Council.

The real struggle I have with my Church - The Catholic Church - is that if one deliberately misses a single Sunday Mass in ones lifetime and does not confess it before the point of ones death, then one will burn in Hell for all eternity. This is a Sin against the Catholic Church - not against God. Therefore the Catholic Church is free to remove that Mortal Sin. Now, suppose that after all time is consumed we end up with an exhausted Universe and all but one human being is in Heaven. The one person in Hell is the one that chose not to attend Sunday Mass on one Sunday during their 80 year long life. But they would be in Heaven if the Catholic Church had not chosen on its own authority ( given that it has authority ) to demand under pain of Mortal Sin that all of its followers are required to attend Mass per Sunday. That, to me, is a Diabolical Doctrine. Listen, the Catholic is not in Hell because he / she disobeyed God. He /she is there on the grounds that he / she disobeyed the Pope !

@@frankieRandle8779 It`s in the extended edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I don`t know whether or not it is in the abridged version. But I wouldn`t advise you ( if you are a Catholic ) to leave the Catholic Church. You may easily find this information on the Internet.

The divorced remarry all the time. With or without some male priest absolving the first marriage. Grow up Catholic Church it's 2024 not 1624.

The divorced Catholic Can remarry; but he/she just cannot go to the sacrament of communion without an anulment from the first marrige. The church does not have to change its laws that they have had for 2,000 years for you, any more than the Commandments need to change. These are God's laws. If you are divorced, you can go to communion (after confession), but if you remarry and the 1st marriage wasn't anuled, then in God's eyes (it is his law, after all), than you are committing adultery, as you are still considered married to the person from your 1st marriage. Talk to your local priest if you still don't understand.

Where does it say in scripture that a marriage must be annulled by the church first? There are two reasons in scripture for divorce, when infidelity occurs and when an unbeliever leaves a believer. However, it is unclear, when the unbeliever leaves the believer, that the believer should allow the marriage play out to the end by seeing if the unbeliever files for divorce or wishes to reconcile. Personally, I would hope the believer lets it play out. His or her conscience would probably be more clear. Probably a lot of prayer and supplication by the individual, elders of the church and close church members would be needed in this instance. Matthew 5 31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’; 32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 1 Corinthians 7 12 But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?
